Specification of Letters Patent, Patented lilai. 13, 1917.
Application filed April 1, 1916. Serial No. 88,258.
1 u on whom it may concern:
lie it known that LJUSEIII E. Sources, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Yaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State .of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for iastine' Brass Bars; and I. do hereby declare the followin when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters oireference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and whichsaid drawings constitute part of this application, and represent ini v Figure 1 a front View of a mold for east: ing brass barsconstructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 3 a top or plan view.
Fig. 4 a sectional View on the line a .7) of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 a vertical sectional View.
Fig. 6 a front View of the mold in the open position.
Fig. 7 a top or plan view of the same. This invention relates to an improvement in molds for east brass bars. In preparing:
. brass for rolling into sheets, it is first cast into bars which are subsequently rolled to the desired thickness. I
The object of this invention is to provide a mold in which these bars may be conveniently cast. and the invention consists in the construction, as hereinafter described andparticularly recited in the claims. The
mold consists of a back plate 2 and a front plate 3, the back plate formed with forwardly .rojecting side flanges st and 5, and
tlangeli, the space between the side flanges and the depth of the flanges corresponding to the size of the bar to be cast. Preferably and as clearly shown in Figs. l and 7. of the drawings, the edges of the flanges tand aare beveled, and preferably the upper end of the flange i IS formed with a notch 13 for the purpose as will hereina it appear: The front plate '3 is formed with a rearwardlv iro'ectinn fian e 7 which sets outside of the flanges 4-, 5 and 6 of the backplate so as to forin a chamber between the two plates. The uppen end of the front plate 3 is cut awaj. and'be'veled to form a throat 14. By beveling the flanges: a: and 5 a tight "oint is formed between the two plates. knuckles 8 and 9, and on the front plate are n one side of the back plate are knuckles 10 and 11, and through these lniuckles a pintle 12 extends so that the projecting heyond the sides of the backplate and supporting at their opposite ends 'latches .LT, 18, lt and 20 which engage with transverse rods 21 and 22 nnuinted on the front plate. and by which the two plates are locked together when in the closed position. Preferably and as herein shown, the rods 21 and 22 are protected by transi 'ersely arranged downwardly inclined shields 23 and 2. Pivot-ally connected with the top of the back plateis a strainer 2-5 having perforations 3:2 in. its bottonn which, when the strainer is turned forward, will register with the chamber formed between the two plates. This inold rests upon the floor or other suitable base and may be supported in a Verti .al position in any desired manner. 'As herein shown the back pl to is fornied with undercut guides 26 and between which is a vertically moi"- able slide 28 having hooked fingers 29 and Eli) ada d to hook over a suitably supported bar or frai'ne' 31. The slide 28 is ad jnstably clamped to the. back plate by means of a set screw 33. vPreparatory to casting bars the front plate is folded against the back plate, and the hooks turned forward to troduct'ion of a suitable tool or implement,
" to pry away the front plate in case it sticks.
"When theinold is open the cast barin the chamber is readily removed. Thepnrpose ofthe guards 2'3 and 24 is to deflect away from the mold any inetal'which might overflowfroin the chamber or from the strainer.

2. A mold for casting brass bars comprising a front plate and a back plate, the side and bottom edges of the front plate formed with a rearwardlv and bottom edge of the back plate formed with a forwardly projecting beveled flange fitting within the flange on the front p te, the'said plates formed on one side with knuckles, a pintle extending through said knuckles, whereby said plates are hinged together, transverse rods mounted on. the rear of the hack plate and on the front of the frontplate, the ends of the rods proprojecting flange, the side latches pivotally mounted on the rods at the and adapted to engage with the rods at the front, whereby the plates may be locked to F said front plate also for?
