novel features of construction as will hereinafter be fully described in the specification and defined in the claims.
The main object of the invention is to provide a substitute for the glass milk bottle of the type in common use that is of substantially the same conformation, strong in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object is to form the wall or body from a tube of preferably waxed paper, such tube having equally spaced and gradually deepening channels, extending from substantially its center to one end, which give strength to the bott-le and its upper portion a. conical formation.
A still further object is to strengthen and add finish to the bottle by encircling its open end with a reinforcing member comprising a combined cap-seat. and ferrule slotted to engage in interlocking relation with the corrugationsof the fluted wall.
The accompanying, drawings illustrating a milk bottle made in accordance with my invention are as follows Figure l is a top plan view of the bottle before the reinforcing member has been attached; Fig. 2, a. part side elevation and part vertical central sectional view of the completed bottle; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the reinforcing member comprising the combined cap-seat and ferrule; and Fig. 4, a vertical central sectional view of such member.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 'l indicates the wall or body of the bottle comprising a tube formed, preferably, of waxed paper wound upon a mandrel under heated pressure. This tube is placed in a die press and fluted for substantially half its length, as indicated, the channels 2 thus formed being equally spaced circumferentially and gradually deepening from their inner to their outer ends.
Encircling .the open end of the bottle is a reinforcing member 3 formed of any suitable composition material, preferably nonmetallic, and comprises a ferrule 4 from which extends upwardly an annular flange 5, The ferrule 4 has formed therein equally spaced tapering slots 6, alternating with similarly' tapering lateral projections 7 adapted to engage with -a perfect fit the fluted wall. When the member 3 is placed on the bottle, the fluted end of the wall extends slightly above the top ofthe ferrule .portion 4 and is thereafter turned over to form the flange 8 whichirmly holds such member in place, longitudinally, and against removal, while downward displacement thereof-.is prevented because of the gradually increasing diameter of the wall 1 The ferrule 4 of the member '3 prevents the ilute'd end of the bottle from spreading, thus holding it in conical formation, and the tops of the projections 7 with the flange 8 turned tliereover form within the flange portion 5 a seat for the usual paper sealing` cap, indicated `in dotted lines, Fig. 2, by the numeral 9.
The bottom 10 of the bottle is set part way into the lower end of the tubular wall 1 and has a downwardly extending annular flange 1l turned upon itself to inclose the end of the tubein the usual manner.
What I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, aI bottle of the character described comprising a bottom, a wall formed of paper and having va longitudinally fluted portion, and a ferrule slotted to form interlocking engagement with said fluted wall portion at the open end ofthe bottle.
2. As a new article` of manufacture, a bottle of the character described comprising ar bottom, a wall formed of paper and having a conical portion in which are formed equally spaced-longitudinally extending channels gradually deepening toward their outer ends, and a'ferrule slotted to form interlocking engagement with said fluted wall portion at the open end of the bottle.
3. As a new article ofv manufacture, a bottle of the character described comprising a. bottom, a. wall formed from a paper tube and having a conical portion in which a are formed equally spaced longitudinally extending channels gradually deepening toward their outer ends, a ferrule slotted to form interlocking engagement with said iuted wall portion at the open end ofthe bottle, and engaging means bent from the said wall portion to hold the errule against removal.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle of the character described comprisf ing a bottom, a wall formed froma paper tube and having a conical ortion in which d ber a ainst removal.
are formed equally space longitudinally extending channels. gradually deepening toward their outer ends, a ferrule slotted toform interlocking engagement with said fluted wall portion at the open end of Vthe bottle, and a flange turned from the said wall portion to hold the ferrule against removal. Y A
5. As a new article of manufacture, a
bottle of the character described comprising a bottom, a wall formed from a paper tube and having a conical portion in which' are formedequally spaced longitudinally extending channels gradually deepeningtoward` their outer.- ends, `and ,a-reinforcing 'member encircling the openend of the bot` tle comprising a'seat for a sealing-ca and` a ferrule' which is slotted to vform mterlocking engagement, with the said iuted wall portion f As a new article @of manufacture, 'a
are formed equally spaced longitudinally" extending channels graduallyV deepening toward their outer ends, a reinforcing member encircling the open end of theV bottle comprising a seat for a sealing-cap and a ferrule .which is slotted to` form interlocking ,engagement with the said flutedwall portion, and a flange bent from the end of the said wall portion to `hold said mem- 7. s' anew article of manufacture, a bottle ofthe character described comprisextending channels vgradually deepening toward4 their outer ends, a reinforcing mem'- ber .slotted to '.fo'rmv alternating tapered channels and projections having interlock ing engagement with the said utedwall portion, engaging means bent from the end ofl the said wall portion to hold thefl reinforcing member against removal, and an (annular flange extending upwardly from said member, the tops of the said prjec-.
tions and the open end of said iuted wall portion forming for a sealing-cap.
