EXPANSIBLE REAMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2'7, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WASI IINGTQNHLf SANTMYERS and ROY L. I-InPNnR, citizens of the United States, residing at Strasburg, in the county of Shenandoah and .State of Virginia, and Tomsbrook, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reamers and more particularly to a combination expansible reamer, counter-sink, and tap, and has for its object the provision of a deviceof this character that will have removable and adjustable cutting blades. a v
Another object is to provide an expansible reamer that has novel adjusting and clamp-, ing means for the cutting blades.
A further object is to provide means for taking care of the cuttings and preventing the reamer sticking or clogging.
These and other objects such as simplicity, durability, cheapness in manufacture and the general improvement of the art appear in the following specification and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side View of our improved expansible reamer,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of our expansible reamer having one blade removed to show the longitudinal groove,
Fig. 3 is a front end view of same, and
Fig. 4 is a view of a blade having tap teeth out therein.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the spindle of the device having tapering grooves 2 cut therein for the reception of blades 3, and a spiral groove 4 out therein for a purpose hereinafter described. An enlarged ring 5 is formed adjacent the top of the spindle and has slots 6 formed therein in alinement with the grooves 2. A threaded extension 7 is formed above the ring 5 and a further extension 8 is formed as a chuck engaging member.
The cutting blades 3 have their inner edges 9 formed straight and have beveled points 10. The cutting edges of said blades taper inwardly from the points 10 and terminate adjacent their top in an outwardly extendi ngbevel A head portion 12 extends upwardly from the bevel 11 and has a notch 13 formed therein for the. reception of adjusti-ngmeans. The top of the head porextension 7 andoperating within the notches 13 in theblades 8.
The clamping means comprises a second disk 16 threaded on the extension 7 and having a beveled edge 17 which contacts with the beveled portion 14 ofthe blades.
In Fig. 4,1 have shown a blade having serrations on its cutting edge for cutting threads. .A set of these blades may be used in my reamer which would readily convert it into an expansible tap.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that the several parts of the reamer are unassembled, the blades 3 are inserted in the grooves 2 and the disk 15 is inserted in the notches 13 in the blades and then screwed down. The clamping disk 16 is" then screwed down in engagement with the beveled portions 14: of the blades clamping them in position.
The taper of the grooves 2 and the outside or cutting edges of the blades being of the same pitch the circumference of the reamer will be the same throughout its length.
In use the beveled points 10 of the blades form a counter-sink as does also'the beveled portionll of the blades. The spiral groove 4 receives the cuttings and prevents clogging and sticking of the reamer.
To change our device to a tap it is only necessary to remove the reamer blades and insert the tap blades shown in Fig. 4 and clamp them in position.
It will be understood that we may change minor details of construction and use any number of blades in this device without departing from the spirit of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a spindle having a plurality of grooves therein, blades disposed in said grooves, means operatable on said spindle for adjusting said blades, and means operatable longitudinally on said spindle and engaglng the rear end of sald blades for toreing the forward ends into position.
2. A reamer comprising a spindle having longitudinal grooves therein, a ring formed on said spindle and having slots therein in alinement with said grooves, cutting blades disposed in said grooves and said slots, means for adjusting said blades, and means for clamping said blades.
3. A reamer comprising a spindle having longitudinal grooves therein, a ring formed on said spindle and having slots therein in alinement with said grooves, cutting blades having notches adjacent their upper end disposed in said grooves and said slots, a disk threaded on the upper end of said spindle and disposed within the notches formed in said blades, and a second disk threaded on said spindle above said first named disk for clamping said blades in position.
4. An eXpansible reamer comprising a spindle, longitudinal tapering grooves formed in said spindle, blades having their outer edges tapered on an angle equal to the tapered angle of said grooves, said blades being'disposed in said grooves, and means on the rear end of said spindle for adjust ing and clamping said blades in position.
5. An expansible reainer comprising a spindle, longitudinal grooves formed in said spindle, blades disposed in said grooves, said blades having their lower ends cut away on an angle to form a counter-sink and adapted to extend below said spindle, means mountedon the rear of said spindle for adjusting said blades and means mounted 011 the rear end of said spindle and engaging the rear ends of said blades for clamping them in position. 7
' 6. in expansible reamer comprising a spindle, longitudinal grooves formed in said spindle, blades disposed in said grooves, said blades having a counter-sink formed at the rear oi their cutting edge and at their forward end, and means on the rear end of said spindle for adjusting and clamping said blades in position.
In testimony vwhereof we'hereto aflix our signatures. a
