To all 'whom z't may concern Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM E. NAGLE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to tools, and has speclal reference to what are known as milling tools, in which the cutters are formed from a high speed tungsten steel or other high grade metal, and the body for holdlng the cutters is formed from llow carbon steel or other low grade metal.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient milling tool, 1n which the teeth or cutters are capable of being easily and conveniently inserted 1n the body and removable therefrom, will be pre- 4vented from shifting sidewise or tipping on the body when in use, and when applied to the body will be practically as strong and rigid 'as solid milling cutters which are formed as-integral parts of such body.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as herelnafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out 1n the -claims.
`To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved tool, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the cutters removed.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw- 1n gis illustrated in the drawing A represents the milling tool as a whole which has its body 1 formed of low grade metal, such as low carbon steel and is of the usual or well known construction, in'which such body is of the ordinary circular disk shape of any desired diameter and of a thickness somewhat less than the width of the cut to be made by the cutters hereinafter described.
This body 1 is provided with the usual radial slots 22 which extend into such body from the periphery 3 Yof the same, and are adapted to recelve the removable cutters 4. The cutters 4 are formed of high ade metal, such as high speed tungsten stee and of such a length that when inserted into the slots 2, they'will have their ends 4 `extend beyond the side faces 1 of the body 1. The cuttlng edge 5 formed`on o ne side 5 of the cutters 4 extend beyond the periphery 8 of the body 1 when such cutters are 1n place wlthm the slots 2." A lug 6 is .formed on the side 5 of the cutters 4 and 1t 1s formed preferably semi-circular in shape for fitting within a like shaped seat 7 formed at one side of the slots 2 when the cutters are in place within said slots. A filister head screw 8 is screwed into a threaded hole 9 along side of the seat 7 by lts threaded shank 10 and its head l1 is adapted to extend over and engage by a portion of the same with the outer end of the lug 6 on the cutters 4 when such shank 1s screwed down to place. The other portlon of the head 11 on the screw 8 will thus be brought down into a counter sunk slot 11 1n the periphery 3 of the body 1 when such screw is in place.
It will thus be seen that when the cutters 4 are inserted in place within the slots 2 inA the body 1 and secured therein by the screw 8 engaging with the outer ends of the lugs 6 on the cutters, such cutters will be held rigid and tight in such body, and in case one of such cutters needs sharpening, or has become broken and needs repairing, it can readily be removed for such purpose or removed when desired by simply unscrewing thescrews 8 and lifting out the cutters.
It will also be seen that such cutters will always remain securely in place until itis desired to remove the same, and secure against lateral movement, tilting and dis laoement and such cutters will not be re ulred to be made of special shapes for belng held in place, as in the ordinary forms of these removable cutters, so that they will be practically no more expensive to manufacture than the ordinary cutters, while at the same time a milling tool is provided in which the cutters can be worked and operated successfully under any conditions, either on side or face, and can perform the heaviest duty without the cutters being displaced.
It will be obvious that my improved construction can be applied to tools other than milling tools and that the metalsl composing the same can be varied, While the shape `of the lug on the cutter may be varied, and
in the design and construction of my im proved tool ma be resorted to, without demrtin from t e spirit of the invention as ene in the appended claims, or sacrificin any of its advantages.
at I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters atent is:
1. In a tool, the combination with a body having slots on its periphery, of removable cutters adapted to be inserted in said slots, a` lug on one side of each of said cutters adapted to engage with a seat in said slots to prevent lateral movement and displacement ofA the cutter in its slot, and means engaging said lug for holding the cutter in its slot.
2. In a tool, the combination with a body having slots on its periphery, of removable cutters adapted to be inserted in'said slots, a lug on .one side of each of said cutters adapted to engage witha seat-in said slots to prevent lateral movement and displacement of the-cutter in its slot, and a screw engaging with a threaded hole alon side of each of said s lots and with the lug or holdv adapted to engage with a seat' in said slots to prevent `lateral movement and displacement of the cutter in its' slot, and a headed screw engaging with a threaded hole along side of said slots and by its head with the i outer end of said lug for holding said cutter in its slot.
