IMPROVEMENT IN BAGATELLE GAMES AND APPARATUS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,767, dated December 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM EVERS, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Bagatelle Game and Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to improvements in the game known as bagatelle, as hereinafter de scribed.

In order to more fully illustrate and describe my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which A represents a table such as is employed in playing bagatelle. The top of the table is covered with sheet metal, for which purpose I prefer zinc as being the most convenient to obtain in large sheets, and the most readily applied. This metallic surface presents many advantages over wood for the top to spin upon. Being firm and smooth the top will spin much longer and move about upon the table much more readily than it will upon a wooden surface; besides, it is not liable to become rough and worn like wood. In the two lower corners of each compartmentI construct a triangular box, F, the top of which is provided with a slot, as shown. A block, g, which is marked with appropriate figures or numbers, is arranged to move up and down in this slot, a spiral or other spring serving to throw it up. A notch, t, on the upper end of this block serves to catch under the top of the box when the block is pushed down. A horizontal pushpin,j, projects through the side of the box in a position convenient for the spinning-top to come in contact with it, and, by striking it free the block g, so that the spring will throw the figures or numbers into view, which numbers can be added to the aggregate number counted by knocking down the pins. The spinning top K, which is used for knocking down the pins and freeing the blocks g, has an elastic band, I, inserted around the rim of the projecting part or flange, so that when it strikes the, side boards of the table the cushion will cause it to rebound away from the side without injuring it.

By these improvements I render the game of bagatelle much more pleasant than formerly, and improve the table itself so that it will last much longer than those now used.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with the table A, having a sheet-metal top, the triangular corner-boxes F, having the notched counting-blocks g arranged to be operated by the horizontal push-pin j, and spinning-top K with its rubber-band l, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
