WASHING-MACHINE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented Feb. 27,1917.
Application ined May 1s, 191e. serial No. 98,367.
chines and has for its principal object thel production of a simple and efficient mechan1s1n which consists'of a minimum number of parts, wherein access maybehad to the interior of the washing machine for the puri pose of facilitating the placing of clothes within the machine or the removal of clothes therefrom.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means formed upon the inner face of the washing machine for producing a scrubbing action as the rotating member is operated.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafterxfully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the washing machine with the top thereof thrown to an open position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the washing machine.
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the washing machine.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line Y of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the fingers carried bythe rotating arm.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of one corner of the washing machine, showing the cover removed.
Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 8-8vof Fig. 4.
Fig. 9Yis a detail perspective view of Vthe rotating arm.
Fig. 10 is a detail perspective of the sleeve through which the rotating shaft passes.
By referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the body or receptacle of the washing machine which is substantially conical in shape, that is to say, tapers toward the upper end thereof,
and this body or receptacle 1 is supported upon a plurality of cross braces or supports l i 2 carried by the radiating legs 3. These legs 3 pass vertically up the sides of the body l, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and a cover 4 is mounted yupon the top of these legs 3 and also upon the body 1, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.y
The cover 4 is substantially rectangular lin shape andis provided with a central opening 5, which central opening 5 isnormally closed by means of a top or coverl 6.
The top or cover 6 is provided with abearing block 7, in which bearing block 7'is placed a bearing sleeve 8. AAn operating shaft 9 is journaled in' the bearing sleeve 8 and is capable of having longitudinal sliding movement through this bearing sleeve 8. This shaft 9 carries an arm or head 10 at the lower end thereof by being threaded into the socket member 11 mounted upon the upper face of the head or arm 10. This head or larm 10 is provided with. a plurality of apertures 12 within which apertures 12 fit the reduced ends 13 of the lingers 14, these fingers 14 diverging from the center of the arm 10, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 3 of the draw. ings.
A crank arm 15 .is carried by the upper end of the shaft 9 for facilitating the manual rotation of the arm 10, as will be obvious.
As stated above, the cover 6 is carriedby the top 4 of the washing machine', and is hinged to the side thereof by means of the hinges 16, thereby allowing the cover 6 to -be swung vertically to the position shown in Fig. 1, when so desired, and lpermit the clothes to be placed within or removed from the body of the washing machine.
It should be understood that in view of the fact that the shaft 9 is slidable within the sleeve 8 the head 10 may be drawn into close engagement with the inner face of the door or lid 6 in order to allow the same to be withdrawn and prevent the head 10 from injuring the cover 4. It, of course, should be understood that a suitable wringer may be supported in any suitable ordesired manner upon the washing machine, and the cover 4 is provided with a trough shape or inclined rear wall 17 to cause the draining water from the wringer or from theclothes while the same are being removed from the receptacle to drain into the receptacle and therej by preventV the Water from Ydraining upon the floor or the feet of the operator.
By carefully considering Fig. 3 and also Y Fig. l of the drawings it Will be seen that the innerface of the receptacle l is pro- Vvided 'with a plurality of spaced Vertical corrugated plates/1S which plates are secured to the sides of the receptacle in 'any suitable or desired manner. 4These corrugated plates 1S will constitute an e'liicient scrubbing-or rubbing ineinber'upon which the clothes are adapted to be rubbed for the purpose of ye'liiciently cleaning the sanie. The bottoni of thei'eceptaclel is provided with a plurality of substantially if-shaped Y bottoni Vplates lt) Which'plates haye their these flanges 2l being adapted :to be sealed or soldered together for constituting an e'liicient connection and smooth rubbing joint upon the bottoni face .ot the receptacle.
It should be understood tlliatthercorrugated platesrlS comprising a portion of the inner `wall of the Washing machine will constitute Va support at eacli corner` or' the top l for producing` a support orV abutment against which .'theouter edge'of the top 6 is adapted to rest when in a closed position.
W hat Vis claimed is:
Washing maehineof the class described comprising a body, saidbody provided with a corrugated lining,:,the cori'iigations extend ing vertically in said lining, a bottoni positioned Within said bodyv and formed ot a plurality of interlocking` and Vcjoinpactly ranged segments,` each V'segment provided 'with an upwardly inclined rib'at its outer edge and terminating ina .depending lip exs tending longitudinally throughout its length for `producing a blunt scrubbing rib kat each .side ,edge of each segment,V and said blunt scrubbing iib radiating froml the center of said body. Y In testimony whereof I hereunto allix niy signature.
