Description

C. P. GARTEN. HINGED 501mm FOR DRY MEASURES.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 11, I916- CHARLES P. GARTEN, 0F ASHLANID, KENTUCKY;
I-IINGED BoTToMron DRY MEASURES.
Specification of Letters'Patent. v v Patented Feb. 27,191"7.
Application filed July 11, 1916; Serial aa'ioasae.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, CHARLns P. Gan'rnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at" Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinged Bottoms for DryMeasures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hinged bottom for dry measures for various purposes and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having a hinged bottom with a releasing latch, affording means whereby, when it is desired to dispense the contents of the measure, it may be done by releasing the catch,
allowingthe bottom to swing down.
The invention comprises a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dry meas-z adapted to engage an opening in the bottom of the boxing E upon the side of the measure. A latch, designated by letter H, is pivotally mounted upon a pin I projecting from the wall of said boxing, and said latch is notched as at K for the reception of the free end of the hook D. The latch is also provided with a shoulder N against which the inner end of a push rod 0 is adapted to relative to the hook D.
V bear, said rod passing through an aperture R formed inthe lip T which projects laterally from the upper portion of the measure on the outside thereof, the rod being provided with a head Of. A spring S is mounted on said rod 0 and is interposed between the headO and said lip. A coiled spring W bears intermediate the edge of the latch above its pivotal point and the wall ofrthe boxing in whichthe latter is mounted and tends to normally hold the latch in a locking position It will be noted that, when the bottom closes, an inclined curvededge of the hook will come in contact with an inclined curved end of the latch, thus causing the latter to tilt upon its pivot to allow the hook to pass by the same, after which the spring will throw the latch to its normal position. p
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows :When
it is desired to dispense or empty the con tents of the measure, the operator merely pushes down upon the head 0 of the rod 0, causing the latch to tilt free from the hook,
after which the weight of the commodity within the measure will throw the bottom' 7 down and allow'the contents to be dumped."
When the door swings closed, it will be automatically locked, .as will be readily understood. 1 a
7 What I claim tobe new is In combination with a receptacle, a boxing with an aperturedtop and slot in the bottom through which slot a hook is adapted to be passed, a latch pivotedto saidboxing to the wall of the receptacle and having its lower free end hook and its upper end shoulderedabove its pivotal point and at one side of its longitudinal center, a spring interposed between the upper portion of the.
latch and the wall of the boxing, said receptacle having an apertured projection near the top thereof, a spring-pressed rod mounted in said projection and an aperture in the top of the boxing, the lower end of the rod bearing against the shouldered portion of the latch in alinement' with the edge of the hook beneath. I
In testimonyfwhereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
