Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BLASKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Saving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to fuel saving devices wherein pre-heated air is de livered to the highly heated combustible gases evolved from the fire and the air and gases being mixed together and subsequently carried back to the fire where they are consumed to promote the dombustion of the fuel.
An object of the invention is to regulate the supply of air to be delivered to and mixed with the carbonic oxid gases arising from the combustion of the fuel so that the proper amount of air will mix with the arising gases to prevent a draft, or the supply may be totally cut off to prevent any possibility of the same retarding the draft when starting the fire.
A further object of the invention is to provide an overdraft regulator for a device of this character wherein a supply of cold air may be permitted to enter the smoke stack or chimney and the over draft door when opened will permit the supply of cold air within the chimney; the door of the over draft will hold or retard the gases from going up the chimney whereby the gases will be caused to circulate within the lower end of the smoke stack whereby the preheated air coming in contact with the gases will cause the mixture to be carried back to the combustion chamber which will cause more of the gases to be consumed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction,combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings have been illustrated the simple and preferred forms of invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation in necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but the right is reserved to any changes, alterations, and modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the invention and without depart- Specification of Letters Patent.

The numeral 1 indicates a cylindrical casing forming substantially one section of an ordinary stove pipe wherein the device may be easily and readily inserted in place within the smoke stack by removing one of the sections of the smoke stack and substituting the casing in its place. Journaled within this casing adjacent to the lower end thereof is a squared shaft 2 having secured thereto a damper One end of the shaft 2 is provided with a handle 4 whereby the damper may be operated for cutting off the draft through the casing 1. Keyed to the shaft 2 and slidably mounted thereon is a block 5 adapted to mesh with a casting 6 formed upon the casing 1. The adjacent faces of the casting and block are corrugated whereby upon the rotation of the shaft 2 the damper will-be held at the desired angle within the casing to regulate the draft passing through the casing 1. Interposed between the block 5 and the handle 4 is a coil spring 7 for holding the block 5 in constant contact with the casting 6.
Secured to the outer side of the casing 1 is a funnel shaped casing 8.- This casing 8 is secured to the casing 1 by means of the rivets 9 leaving the upper end thereof opened and its lower end closed thereby forming an air pre-heating chamber 10 whereby atmospheric air coming within the chamber 10 will be pre-heated by coming in contact with the surface of the casing 1. Formed in the wall of the casing 1 is an opening 11 which communicates the extreme lower end of the chamber 10 with the interior of the casing 1 and this opening is located slightly below the axis of the damper 3. The metal cut away to form the opening 11 projects within the casing 1 and forms a battle plate 12 for directing the preheated air coming from the preheating chamber 10 to the lower end of the casing 1.
The upper end of the chamber 10 is adapted to be closed by a slide valve 13. Secured to the casing 8 are guideways 1a in which the valve 13 operates. The slide valve is provided with a handle 15 whereby the same may be easily operated for open in closing the entrance to the chamber 10, and also it is obvious that this slide may be opened to permit the proper amount of air to enter the air pro-heating chamber and projecting. from the slide 13 is a stop 16 which is adapted to abut against the inner wall of the casing 8 to limit the outward movement of the slide 13.
In the preferred form of the invention 1 have illustrated a slide valve for controlling the admission of air to the preheating chamber, but in Fig. 7 of the drawings 1 have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention wherein a rotary valve is provided. This valve comprises a casting 17 which is secured to a plate 18 covering the upper end of the casing 8 but communicating with the casting 1T. Formed within the upper face of casting 17 are three openings which are adapted to be closed by means of a rotatable plate 20 pivotally secured to the casting as at 21.
Formed within the casing 1 adjacent to the upper end thereof is an over draft opening 22 which is adapted to be closed by means of the door This door 23 is pivotally mounted as at 24- to the inner wall of the casing and is concaved or adapted to conform to the configuration of the inner periphery of the casing 1 so that when it is in its closed position it will provide an air tight door for the over draft opening. Pivotally secured as at 25 to tie door 23 and adapted to slide through an opening formed within the casing 1 is a rack bar 26. It is obvious from the foregoing that the rack bar will retain the door in closed position or when the teeth of the rack bar engage the casing 1 the door be held opened at the desired position within the casing. When the door 23 is opened as better illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 it will rest within the path of the fumes escaping through the chimney and will retard the fumes or gases and cause the same to descend to the lower end of the casing where the gases which contain combustible products which have not been consumed will again meet with the incoming pre-heated air and subsequently be carried back to the combustion chamber where they are consumed thereby permitting but a very limited amount of the combustible gases to escape through the chimney and burning practically all the gases arising from the combustion of the coal.
By providing a cone shaped or funnel shaped casing 10 the air will be permitted to enter the upper end thereof freely in a large volume, but as it is carried down through the chamber it will be retarded due to the configuration of the chamber and subsequently the air is permitted to enter the easing 1 in a quiet stream.
Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. in a fuel saving device of the charac ter described, the combination with a casing one wall of which has a portion thereof cut away to form an opening therein, said cutaway portion being bent inwardly and extending downwardly to form a baflic plate for said opening whereby the incoming air will be directed downwardly toward the cen ter of the casing, a funnel-shaped air preheating chamber arranged at one side of the V casing and having the smaller end thereof in comnnmication with said opening, and a valve-controlled opening mounted within the larger end of the air preheating chamher.
2. In a fuel saving device of the character described, thecombination with a casing, an air pro-heating chamber communicating with the casing, a damper mounted within the casing, the-upper end of the casing hav-' ing an over draft opening formed therein a door for said opening and adapted to swing within the casing, said door being concavcr in cross section whereby the said door when in an open position will direct the gases to descend to the lower end of the casing so that the same will again come in contact with the air coming into the casing from the air pro-heating chamber.
8. In a fuel saving device of the character described the combination with a casing of the same diameter throughout, the casing having an opening formed therein adjacent to the lower end thereof, a baflie plate for said opening and projecting within the easing, a funnel-shaped air pre-hea-t-ing chamber arranged at one side of the casing, one end of the chamber being in communication with said opening, a valve controlled opening mounted within the opposite end of the chamber, a damper pivotally mounted within the casing and adapted to rest above and adjacent to said opening when in a closed position, the upper end of the casing having an overdraft opening formed therein, a door for said over-draft opening and adapted to swing within the casing substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a fuel saving device of the character described, the combination with a casing, an elongated half cone shaped air pro-heating chamber secured to the outer periphery of the casing, the concave wall of the casing extending within and closing one side of the air pre-heating chamber, whereby the air within the chamber may be thoroughly preheated by the hot gases arising within the casing, means of communication between the smaller end of the chamber and the casing for discharging air within the casing in an opposite direction to the gases and means for controlling the inlet of air to the chamber.
5. In a fuel saving device of the character described, the combination with a casing, an air preheating chamber secured to the casing, a pivotally mounted damper arranged within the casing, means of communication between the air preheating chamber and the casing for directing the incoming preheated air downwardly toward the center of the casing, said damper extending below said communication means and arranged to divide the interior of the casing to form a mixing chamber at one side of the damper and to leave the interior of the easing on the opposite side of the damper open to permit free passage of gases up the easmg.
6. In a fuel saving device of the character described, the combination with a cylindrical casing of the same diameter throughout whereby particles of combustion may pass therethrough, a funnel-shaped air pre-heating chamber secured to the casing, means whereby the preheated air within the chamber will be directed within the casing to ward the center thereof in an opposite direction to the arising particles of combustion, and a damper pivotally mounted within the casing adjacent to and extending below the discharge end of the pre-heating chamber.
7. The combination with a casing adapted to be applied to a stove pipe whereby arising particles of combustion from the stove may pass therethrough, a funnelshaped air pre-heating chamber secured to one side of the casing, means for permitting air to enter the larger end of the chamber and then to be carried down within the chamber whereby the incoming air will be retarded, the smaller and of the casing being adapted to discharge the air within the casing in a single stream in an opposite direction to that of the arising particles of combustion and a damper mounted within the casing adjacent to and extending below the smaller end of the chamber substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a fuel saving device of the character described, the combination with a casing, an air pre-heating chamber secured to the outer periphery thereof, means for controlling the admission of atmospheric air to one end of the chamber, a damper within said casing extending below the opposite end of said chamber, which end is arranged to discharge air in a single stream toward the center of the casing in an opposite direction to the travel of the arising products of combustion, whereby a portion of said products of combustion will pass up the casing at one side of the damper and other portions of said products of combustion arising within the casing at the opposite side of the damper, will mix with the incoming pre-heated air substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In afuel saving device of the character described, the combination with a casing,
a funnel-shaped air pre-heating chamber arranged at one side of the casing, having the smaller end thereof communicating with the interior of the casing adjacent the lower end thereof, a damper mounted within the casing adjacent to the discharge end of the chamber, the upper end of the casing having an overdraft opening therein and a door for said opening adapted to swing within the casin substantially as and for the purpose set orth.
