With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a portion of a stove pipe and illustrating the application of an intensifying device constructed in accordance with our invention;

The plate or valve 11 is adapted when swung into the position indicated byv full lines in Fig. l, to entirelvclose the inner opening in the frame 6, and when swung to open position, or that indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, uncovers the opening defined by the inner edges of the flanges 8, and substantially closes the passage in the smoke pipe. The lateral edges of the plate l1 are cut away as shown, whereby the plate edges are spaced from the interior walls of the smoke pipe when the valve is swung to open position. (See Fig. 3). The arrow in Fig. 1 of the drawings, indicates the direction of draft in the smoke pipe, and it is apparent that when the valve 11 is swung downwardly, the draft will be materially checked, certain parts of the heated air, however, passing around the lateral edges of the plate 11 and into the chimney. This arrangement confines the bulk of the products of combustion within the fire pot of the stove or furnace, whereby the live which ordinarily Dass into the chimney are saved and confined for complete combustion. The force of the products of combustion inescaping around the lateral edges of the valve 11 prevents cold air gaining access to the lire pot of the furnace. When the valve is in the position indicated in Fig. 3, the front drafts of the stove or furnace may remain open, whereby suilicient oxygen may be admitted to the fire box tov promote thorough combustion, without allowing the stove or furnace a draft sutlicient to rapidly burn out the fire. The valve may be moved to any number of positions, whereby the draft in the fire potmay be minutely governed.
A lever 12 1s secured at one end as at 13 to the plate 11, and extends in an out- Ward and rearward direction therefrom,
and has secured to its outer or free end, one end of a cable, or cord 14. Thiscord passes forwardly across the opening in the frame 8 and extends over a pulley 15 sel cured to the bracket 16. The flexible member I4 may then be passed to any suitable place beyond the stove or furnace in position for convenient manipulation. A standard 17 is secured as at 18vto theframe 6 adjacent the rear end thereof, and has secured thereto, one end of a contractile spring 18', the opposite end of the said' spring being secured to a toe 19 constituting the inner end of the lever 12. It will thus be seen that the spring 18 normally exerts upward pressure upon the valve plate 11, whereby the latter is maintained in closed position. Upon pull-'being exerted to the flexible member 14, the lever 12 in its upward movement rocks the plate 11 upon its pivot 10 to open position. The
cord 14 may be fastened so as to hold the valve in any of its positions of adjustment.
From the foregoing, it is seen that we have provided an extremely simple and yet thoroughly efficient means for attaining the objects set forth, and while the above is a description of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that, if desired, certain changes in the minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be Copies of this patent may be obtained for resorted to, without departing from theV spirit of the invention, or exceeding the scope of the claims. What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a stove pipe having an opening therein, of a frame secured to said pipe around said opening, flanges on said frame extending into said pipe, a valve plate pivoted to one end of one of said flanges and being adapted to close the inner opening of the frame, a lever secured at one end to the outer face of said plate and adjacent thehinges thereof, the said lever extending outwardly at a right angle to said plate and being bent rearwardly adjacent its outer end beyond said frame in a direction parallel with said pipe, a pulley mounted on said'frame at one end thereof and in substantially the same horizontal plane with the free end ofV said lever, a spring for nor- 2.
