- a part thereof may be adjusted to be maintained at different heights or in variable ongagement with a base and in oscillatory association therewith, and also in non-movable engagement to provide a stationary foot rest or a foot stool or seat.
A foot rest made in accord with my invention comprises a suitably constructed frame that is adapted to maintain in vertically adjustable, as well as in oscillatory engagement therewith a partially cylindrical foot rest in which is formed a longitudinal concavity, the ends of the partially cylindrical member being provided with pintles that engage with uprights of the frame, so that when the frame and the oscillatory member are associated the center of gravity will be below the pintles and thus maintain the concave portion of the partially cylindrical member uppermost.

tion, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the foot rest. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, the supporting frame being in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, the supporting frame being in section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the uprights and a portion of the supporting frame and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the foot supporting element or member.
A foot rest made to accord with my invention consists of two necessary elements; a foot supporting member and a frame or base that is constructed to maintain in fixed engagement therewith uprights having a plurality of inclined recesses that provide bearings for pintles attached to the other member or foot supporting element, the elements being associated to admit of vertical adjustment of the foot supporting element, there also being present coaeting means for preventing oscillation of the foot supporting element in its .various vertical adjustments.
Referring to the drawings, the supporting frame 6, comprises vertical standards 7,
in which are formed a plurality of inclined recesses or seats 8, for pintles which. project from the ends of the foot supporting element. The standards are braced by arched bars 9 that engage the upper ends of the standards and the supporting frame, which consists of corner posts 10, and angle-bars 11 attached to the posts to form a rigid structure that will receive a part of the foot supporting element. One of the end bars 'of the frame 6 is provided with an aperture to receive a pin that engages when desired one of the several perforations in the end of the foot supporting element to maintain the same against oscillation. The frame 6 may be varied as to construction and though the drawings illustrate a preferred form of a metallic supporting frame or base the same may be made ofwood or a combination of wood and metal, and the pin receiving perforation may be made in one of the upper horizontal bars of the frame or in the bar 9.
The member 12 that provides afoot supporting element or roll has ends that are substantially lune shaped, the major portion of the ends being concentric with centrally located pintles 13 that are attached to project from the ends 1 1 to be seated in horizontally alined recesses in the standards 7, and one of the ends 14 has formed therein a vertical series of apertures 15 With which the pin 16 may engage to prevent, when desired, the oscillation of the roll 12. The two ends 14: of the roll are connected by a suitable sheathing which provides, with the end pieces, a longitudinal concave portion 17, the sides being'rounded to join the portion of the roll which is concentric to the pintle 13. The longitudinal concavity in the roll or foot supporting element 12, locates the center of gravity thereof so that when the roll is free to oscillate the concave portion will be uppermost. The roll may be made from a cylinder of metal, or of thin wood as veneer that is attached to the ends.
The shape of the roll not only changes the center of gravity thereof but also affords a-better rest for the legs than if the surthe same with a fabric which is stretched over the surface of the roll and when so applied will extend across the concave por tion to give or spring when in use, thus doing away with padding.
The invention herein shown may be used as a foot-stool and when used as such the lock pin will be used to prevent oscillation when such movement is considered unde sirable, and it will be noted that the pin receiving apertures 15 are alined to accord with the several recesses in the standard so that asingle pin will lock the roll to the frame irrespective of the vertical adjustment of the roll.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character set forth, a frame having standards provided with a plurality of inclined. slots, a roll having pintles for engagement with the standards the pintles being spaced concentric with the major portion of the surface of the roll, the roll having a longitudinal portion thereof concave.
2. In a foot rest or stool, a frame, a roll mounted for oscillation upon the frame said roll having a longitudinal concavity in its surface the major portion of the surface of the roll beyond the concavity being concentric with the axis of oscillation.
3. In a device of the character set forth, a base having at its ends standards with vertical series of recesses, a roll mounted for oscillation upon the standards the axis of oscillation being concentric with a portion of the roll, a plurality of apertures formed in one of the ends of the roll said apertures being spaced to accord with the spacing of the vertical recesses in the stand ards, and a pin carried by the base for holding the roll against oscillation.
l. In a foot rest or stool, a base or frame, a roll provided with a longitudinal concavity, means attached to theends of the roll for pivot-ally associating the same with th base or frame so that the center of gravity of the roll will be below the means for pivotally associating the roll with the frame; for the purpose of maintaining the concave portion of the roll uppermost.
In a foot rest or stool, a supporting frame, a roll provided with means for maintaining the same in oscillatory engagement with the frame such means being attached to the ends of the roll and concentric with the major portion of its circui'nference, a longitudinal concavity in the roll which with its su 'iporting means will maintain the concave portion of the roll uppermost and means for engagement with the roll and the frame for holding the roll against oscillation.
6. In a foot rest or stool, a frame, a roll having end pintles positioned to project from the ends of the roll and positioned concentric with the major portion of the surface of the roll, a lune-shaped longitudinal concavity in the roll which will be maintained uppermost when the roll is in pivotal engagement with th frame.
