To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV J. T. IWERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Point Roberts, in the county of Whatcom and State of Washington, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Horse Holders and Releasers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in multiple' horse holders and releasers and its object is to provide means whereby a number of horses maybe hitched in a stable and simultaneously or individually released as desired. A further object is to provide means whereby the animals when simultaneously released, as in case of fire or other emergency,

will be stampeded or frightened and so induced to leave their stalls hurriedly and thus avoid possible danger.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification,

pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the device in operative position.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1 but with the device in released or inoperative position.

Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The reference numeral 1 denotes the stable provided with the usual manger wall 2 and with division posts 8 to which the interior partitions are secured that divide the building into stalls. Upon the partitions 4 sleeves 5 are arranged through which the cords 6 extend that are secured to the eyes 7 of bolts 8 which bolts are formed with heads 9 slidably disposed in the casings 10 and adapted for releasable engagement with the keepers 11 which together with said casings are integral with base 12 which is secured directly to the manger wall. The casings 10 are formed with longitudinal perforations or slots 13 in which rods 14; are movably dis posed, said rods extending through erforations in the bolts 8 and throng slots 15 in the manger wall. Springs 16 encircling the bolts 8 are disposed in. the longitu dinal bore of the casings l0 and abut the said rods'l i and the caps 17 of the said casings and serve to yieldingly retain the heads 9 of the bolts in the keepers 11. The several cords 6 are connected by strands 18 with a common cable 19 which is connected to a suitable lever (not shown) outside the stable 'by means of which it may be partly with:

drawn from the stable.

Referring again to the rods 14, the same are provided at their lower ends with the links 20 that carry a wire tape 21 which is secured to a sleeve 23 which is supported upon a shaft 24; carried by a bracket 25 depending from and secured to the manger wall. The said sleeve 28, at one end, is enlarged to accommodate a spring 26 which is secured thereto and to the said shaft 24, and said sleeve at its enlarged termination carries the abrasive disk 27 which is in frictional engagement with the metallic post 28. Normally the tape 21 is wound upon the sleeve 23 and retained in this position through the medium of the spring 26.

The operation of the device is as follows: The bolt heads 9 normally carry the hitching rings 29 to which the halter straps of the animals hitched within the stalls are secured. To release one animal at a time the operator enters the stable and grasps one of the hand rings 30 carried by the cords 6 and pulls upon said ring thereby retracting one bolt 8 and disengaging its head from the keeper 11 and forcing the disengagement of the hitching ring 29 from that head. The animal is then free. This operation will, at the same time, partially unwind the tape 21 from the sleeve 23 thus rotating said sleeve and the disk 27 which, due to its frictional engagement with the post 28, will create a number of sparks.

To release all of the animals simultaneously the operator from without the stable pulls the cable 19 which through the medium of the strands 18 retracts the bolts 8 and releases the hitching rings and at the same the winding and unwinding of the tapesparks are created by the disks 27 and posts 28 which serve to frighten the animals Within the stalls and cause them to stampede and escape from the building Which they, otherwise, Would probably fail to do.

What is claimed is 1. In a multiple horse holder and releaser, a plurality of slotted bolt casings and alined keepers, bars carried by said bolts and movably arranged in the slotted portions of said bolt casings, expansion springs Within said bolt casings and abutting said bars, means for moving said bolts and bars longitudinally of said bolt casings against the tension of said expansion springs to Withdraw said bolts from engagement with said keepers, halter rings carried by said bolts; rotary sleeves operatively arranged adjacent said bars, a tape connecting said bars and the said rotary sleeves, coil springs operatively connected to said sleeves for yieldingly retaining said tape Wound thereupon, abrasive disks made fast to said rotary sleeves and metallic posts frictionally engaging said abrasive disks.

2. In a multiple horse holder and releaser, a plurality of slotted bolt casings and alined keepers, bars carried by said bolts and movably arranged in the slotted portions of said bolt casings, expansion springs Within said bolt casings and abutting said bars, means for moving said bolts and bars longitudinally of said bolt casings against the tension of said expansion springs to Withdraw said bolts from engagement With said keepers, halter rings releasably carried by said bolts, and abrasive spark-producing elements operatively connected to said bars.
