To all whom it ma concern: j
Be it known t at we, Iva-N HANKovIcH and WlNko HANKovIoH, sub'ects of the King of Hungary, residing at in the county'of Lake and' State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Rail-Joints, 'of which the folowing is a specification. L This invention relates to certain Vnew and useful improvements in rail joints.
The prnnary'object of the present invention `is 'to provide a rail-joint that is extnexn'ely simple in construction and operation and one that will be effectively retained in position hen so arranged with comparatively few parts to become damaged or broken. j
" A further object. of the invention 1s to rovide a rail joint of. the scarf type in which the tread section of one rail as a projection co erating Withva socket in the ftread of an a jacent rail withcoperating locking means carried by the bases of( the adjacent rails .to obviate the use of joint chairs and v similar devices.
l With thei aliove Vgeneral objects inviewand others thatI will appear as the nature of the inVentiOn-isbetter understood, the same consists in; the novel construction, combina- '-tion and arrangement of'parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed. In the drawing forming a part of-this application and to which re erence is had herein by like characters designating correspending parts throughout the several f vf1ews,:-'
' Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a pair of adjacent rails, partially broken away 4and-partially in section to show the inter- '40 locking connection between adjacent rail Fig. 2 is an end elevational View -of the 1 rail carrying the tongue projection with the .lower portion thereof shown partlyfin section to illustrate one position of ,the base locking-elementw Fi .3 is a `view similar toEig. 2 with the base j ooking element in anotherposition.
Fig. et is a perspective "view of the rail. end W carryin the treadplojecting tongue and the basefloiing element, `and 5- is a sectional' view takenon line '2" illustrating in detail the lmf sribd, their-invention. includes orineda adjacent trail .ends

Specification. of Letters Patent. Patented Feb; 20, 19117., Application med October 19, 1910. Serial No. 128,580. l i
"captionV ina` similarly shaped socket'` formed I in the tread" of the adjacent rail end. A
tensioned sliding pin or rod iscarried b y` one' of the railsadjacent the base portion thereof and 1s adapted for reception in a socket formed in the adjacent base portion of the adjacent rail. The rail endearrying the sliding pin is constructed to coperate with a hand1e=carried vby saidpin whereby the said pin is held in projected locked position with the adjacentrail.
Referring more in detail 'tothe accomthe reference numerals 10 and A11 designate adjacent rail ends, tread portion 12 of the rail '10 'being extended to provide a dovetail ,tongue 13 adaptedV for reception in the socket 14 formed in the tread 15 of the adjacent rail 'io'4 n the end 11. A slight space'is left as shown in I' Fig-1 for expansion and contraction of the tongue 13. l
The web and base flanges of the adjacent rail ends contact over their entire surfaces as shown in Fig. 1 and means is associated with the adjacent rail-ends at the lower .por-
tions thereof to prevent relative movement of the railends and consists in providing` a longitudinally extending socket 1.6 at the base of the rail 10 and a similar aline'd socket 17 formedin the adjacent rail end 1.1. The web of the rail 1() is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 18 communicating with the socket `16 as clea'rly shown in Figs. 2 to 5, while the forward end of said slot has an angular extension 19 for purposes presently7 to appear. A sliding pin 20 is received in the socket 16, and when so positioned arhandle 21 is into and extends through r slot 18 so that when so positioned, it w1", be impossible be accidentally displaced An expansion coil spring 22 is 'mounted in the socket 16 rearwardly of the pin 20 and is adapted to hold the same forwardly projected at all times. a
When it is desired to assemble adjacent the pin 2O is held retracted in the; socket '16 against the tension of thesprin 22 and the ad `aoent rail ends iso position to enable' the tongue 13 to' be loweredinto the slot 14, and when the sockets 16 and' 17 are alined, the pin .20 may be released ,sogthat the spr-ing 22 will fgr the ,pin 2o inw() 'thesocket `17 in the adjacent rail end. f
l 'the pin is moved this noeto'n,l the 'sinne` mabe -slightly `rotated .by the handle 21 so et'the said handle lies within v the anguxtension 19. ofthe alot `which will pref Avenu; abcidental dieplmnmentl of the ypm 2,0.
