Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
Application filed July 26, 1915. Serial No. 42,008.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, HARRY EBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Bowers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to shutter bowers and fastenings of that type in which a pivoted rod combined with a bowing plate and fastening bracket is utilized to lock the blinds in closed position and to hold them in the different positions to which they may be bowed or entirely open.
The present invention has to do only with the bowing rod and its support, and the other instrumentallties which make up the device may be of the usualor any suitable type.
The invention has for its object to provide a bowing rod which may be cheaply constructed and assembled and which will serve both as a right or left rod without the necessity of specially constructing the rod and its supporting bracket for right and left hand use. 7
In order that the construction may be clear to those skilled in the art, I have shown one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of so much of a window-frame and blind as will illustrate the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bowing rod and its supporting bracket. V
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the rod sup porting bracket.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the bracket.
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the bracket with the rod-supporting post removed.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the bracket.
Referring to the drawings by numbers like numbers indicating like parts in the several views. 10 indicates the rod bracket or supporting plate which may be of any desired form, and is provided with the usual screw holes to permit its attachment to'the blind.
The said plate 10 is provided with an opening 11 throu h which the rod carrying post 12' is passe and in which said post wivels, the said post 12 having a base 13 which seats in a suitable socket in the bracket 10. The said socket is provided with a lug 1a which is adapted to engage one of a plurality of recesses 15 formed on the base 13' of the post, these recesses as shown being preferably twoin number and diametrically opposed so that by simply swiveling the post either of the recesses 15 may be brought into engagement with the lug l4 and a right or left hand bowing rod will result.
'Theend of the post 12 has a hole therethrough to receive the offset or turnecbover end 16 of the bowing rod 17, the free end of the rod: being offset or turned-over so as to provide means for engaging the sockets in the usual bowing plate with which the device is used. It will be observed that the bowing rod has its ends turned-over or offset symmetrically so that in assembling the workman may insert either end into the hole 18in the post and rivet or head down the end of the rod so as to secure it to the post, and this from a practical standpoint is of considerable value as the necessity for the workman selecting a specially prepared end for the purpose of assembling the post and bowing rod is done away with.
1 The aperture 11 inplate 10 is of such size that the rod 17 and post 12 maybe assembled and readily passed through the opening 11 so that the work of assembling the post and bowing rod is very much simplified.
The recesses and lug, while they permit a limited swiveling movement of the post and bowing rod so as to provide for the necessary rise and fall of the rod to disengage and engage it with the socket plates on the window-sill, will, at the same time maintain the rod in the same general horizontal position which. it must be maintained in. V
The socket 11 and the base 13 fit loosely so as to permit free swiveling of the post,
' but at the same time are sufiiciently tight to preventany tilting or rocking laterally, and the post 12 fits turning fit in thehole 11.
In order that there may be no danger of the base 13 binding when the bracket 10 is screwed to the blind or other support, I preferably provide the bracket with a slight rib 19 which is slightly above the plane of the base 13 so that the post and base will swivel freely and yet the base will be preof the post vented from tilting or rocking, and its move-' ments confined to the swiveling or rotating movement around the axis of the post.
It will be obvious that slight changes in design and meohanicaldetailsmay be made with an easy 1. In a device of the class described, a
supporting-plate having a post-receiving aperture and a recess encircllng said aper-V true, a
reversible rod-supporting post mounted to swivel in said aperture and having a base engaging said recess, interengaging means on said plate and post to limit the swiveling movement of said post in either of its positions, and a bowing rod pivotally mounted on said post.
V 2. In a device of the class described, asupporting-plate having a post-receiving aperture and a, recess encircling said aperture, a reversible rod-supporting post having a notched base mounted to swivel in said aperture with said base seated in said recess, a lug on said plate to engage a recess in the base of said post to limit the swiveling movement of said post, and a bowing rod pivotally mounted on said post. In a device oi. the class described, a su morting-plate having a iost-receiving aperture and a recess encircling said aperture, a reversible rod-supporting post mounted to swivel in said aperture and having a base seating in said recess, opposed notches on base of said post, a lug on said plate to engage one or the other 01": said notches and 1111111: the swivellng movement of 'said post, and a bowing rod pivotally mounted on said post.
t. In a device of the class described, a supporting-plate having a post-receiving aperture, a rod-supporting post having a flanged base mounted to swivel in said aperture, an offset rib on said plate to give swiveling clearance to said flanged base, and a bowing rod pivotally mounted on said post. 7 In a device of the class described, a supporting plate having a post-receiving aperture therein, and a reversible rod sup porting post having a flange thereon, said post adapted to be inserted in the aperture :troni the underside of the supporting plate and held against removal by said flange.
In a device of the class described, a supporting plate having a post-receiving ure and an unbroken recess encircling said aperture, a reversible rod-supporting post having a base seating in said recess, said post adapted to be inserted in paid aperture from the underside of the sup porting plate and swivel in said a erture, opposed notches on the base of said post, and a lug on the plate adapted to enga one of the notches on the base to limit the swiv .eling action 01'? said post.
