Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented r b. so, we.
Application filed December 1.5, 1915. Serial No. 67,002.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS E. a citizen of the United States, residing at Kane, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 0' the invention, such as will enable others slrilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in belt clamps and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted for temporarilv Dn CAMP,
holding the end of belts while lacing while in use in the field.
Another object of the invention is to provide a quickly adjustable clamp which may be easily adjusted to the ends of the belt and firmly hold the same against accidental movement.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a clamp which is actuated by the throw of a single lever which controls the movement of a cam by means of whichthe jaws of the clamp are moved into clamping i position.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set tion and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fi 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamp showing the cam and supporting mechanism therefor removed, and
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary detail view on an enlarged scale partly in section, of the cam and supporting element.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the main jaw member of the device comprising the bottom bar 3 provided on its inner face with a plurality of teeth 3 formed-at opposite ends with the bar 2 are the upturned arms t. which are slotted'as at 5 to provide member which will be more fully hereinafter described. A. suitable hinge barrel 6 is formed centrally of the upper end of each of the arms a and 1s adaptedto form a support to the upper forth in the following specifica for the cam holding elements which will be.
more fully hereinafter described.
The cam holding elements above referred to comprise the arms 6 provided at their outer terminals with the hinge barrels 7 which are adapted to receive the hinge pin 8 which extends through the hinge barrel 6 and holds the arms 6 firmly connected endsof the arms 4:. Formed centrally of each pair of arms 6 are the circular plates 9 which are joined by an arcuate web 10,which conform to the curvature of the lower edge of each of the plates 9. The web 10 is formed with acentra opening and surrounding the opening is an externally screw threaded sleeve 11 on which the nut 12 is threaded. This sleeve is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed slits 13 and is adapted to form a guide for the plunger 14, the upper end of which bears against the cam 15 which is pivoted as at 16 near the upper edges of the plates 9 and has formed integral therewith, the-lever 17 by means of which it is moved into its operative and inoperative position.
Cooperating the jaw memb with the jaw member 1 is er designated generally by the numeral 18 comprising the body 19 having secured to its under side suitable spurs or pins 20 and formed at opposite ends of the body 19 are the tongues 21 which are slidable in the slots 5. A suitable spring designated by the numeral 22 is secure to the upper side of the jaw member 18 in any suitable manner and comprises a bow 23 having the ends of its arms bent so the they extend parallel and lie against the upper face of the jaw member 18 as at 24:. It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the two ends of the belt are brought together and upon movi g the cam into the position shown in Fig. 1, 'it will be seen that the plungerl l will be moved downwardly againstthe bow portion 23 of the spring 22, thereby causing the jaw member 18 to move downwardly in the direction of the jaw member 1 and firmly grip the ends of the belt holding the same in place during its use in the fiel release the device the cam dotted line position shown in it will be seen that the plunger to move upwardly and the jaw member 18 will be released and free to move in the direction of the cam thereby releasing the In order to is thrown into B 1g. 1 and will be free 7 .of the plunger to belt and allowing the device to be removed therefrom.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed is 2 l. A clamp comprising a stationary jaw member provided with arms at opposite ends, a movable jaw member slidable bespring on the upper side of the movable jaw member, a plunger for engaging the bowed portion of said. spring, a cam for engaging the upper end thereof against thespring to move the movable jaw member toward the stationary jaw member and sup 'iorting means for said cam hingedly connected to the arms of the stationary jaw member.
2. A belt clamp comprising a relatively stationary jaw member, arms formed integrally With and. rising vertically from the opposite ends of the stationary jaw' mem her, said arms having slots arranged cen- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
force the lower end the arms for hingedly trally therein, hinge barrels formed on the upper edges of said arms, a movable jaw member located between the arms of said stationary member, said movable jaw provided with tongues at opposite ends thereof, said tongues slidably mounted in the slots of the arms of the stationary jaw member, which slots prevent any lateral moven'ient of the tongues of the movable member with relation to the stationary member, a bow spring arranged on the upper face of said movable member, a plunger for engaging the bowed portion of the spring, a cam operating against the upper end of the plunger forcing the movable member toward the stationary jaw member, and sun porting means pivotally connected to the cam at one end and their opposite ends hingedly secured to the hinge barrels on supporting the cam above the movable member.
In testimony whereof I presence of two witnesses.
