To all wlwm it may concern;
Be it known that I, OTTO ScHUTz,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented new 'and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification.'
This invention relates to a pneumatic tire in which the outer tubular casing or shoe is provided with a plurality of partitions or diaphragms to divide the casing into a plurality .of annular' chambers. In each chamber is arranged a thin elastic pneumatic tube, and each tube is provided with means for simultaneously inlating the tubes.
AThe invention is essentially designed to prevent entire flattening or collapse of the tubular casing when one or more of the inner tubes get punctured. When punctured any of the inner pneumatic tubes can readily be removed from the outer casing, in order to repair the tube without displacement of the other tubes. Eachtube is provided with a separate air inlet tube so that when any of the tubes are punctured that particular air tube can be removed from the casing with its air inlet.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following speciication and claim and. illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

In this drawin the letter a designates a rim which is of t e ordinary clencher type of wheel and adapted for use with a motor vehicle or bicycle. An outer slitted tubular casing 1;.is normally clenched to the rim as is well known.
This casing :is provided with a pair of partitions or annular diaphragms e projectin from the inner portion of the tread towar the rim portion of the casing. These partitions divide the inner portion of the casing into three chambers d, each being open adjacent to the rim to give access to a chamber; A pneumatic elastic tube e is arranged in each chamber, and secured to each tube is an air inlet tube f extending through the slitted casing and-a hole in the rim of the 'in Fig. 4, in order to bunch the segmental tubes` together to form acomplete circle.
The'outer ends of the tubes can be covered by means of a.v screw `cap la. to prevent dirt from entering or leakage of the air, and the end of each tubemay also be separately covered with a screwcap.
The lower portion of the tubes are locked together and held in position relative to the rim by means of a threaded sleeve i having a flange j for engagement with the inner slitted portion of the outer casing. A nut c is adapted to lock the sleeve to the rim of the wheel. The threaded stems of the air tubes where they emerge from the rim are engaged by a nut m for/alining and preventing centrifugal thrust of the tubes.
Any form of spring air inlet valve may be mounted in the bore of each tube to prevent the air from escaping from the tube. The air tubes are all'simultaneously inflated from a vsingle pump so that the pressure in one airy tube will equal the pressure in the other, thus giving uniform resistance to the sides as well as the tread of the tire. They ma be inflated separately when desirable. T e air tubes when clustered and locked together constitute practically a single inlet tube, thereby facilitating the connection of a' coupling when inflatlng the tire. l
The partitions c are each attached at one edge to the inner side of the tread portion of the casing b. Their other edges are free and spaced from'- the inner side of the rim portion of the casing b, to vrender them laterally flexible. The lateral flexibility of the partitions c permits the air pressure in the tubes e to be evenly distributed throughl lt is to be noted that the tubes e project beyond the free edges of the partitions c and that the air inlet tubesf are located between the free edges and the inner side of the rim portion of the casing b.
Sometimes it is desirable when onel of the pneumatic tubes is punctured to increase the pressure in the other tubes. This function can be accomplished by capping one of the air inlet tubes and increasing the pressure in the other air tubes.
I claim:
A pneumatic tire comprising a tubular slitted casingt7 a ,pair of relatively spaced annular partitions located within the casing and each attached at one edge to the inner' nemesi of the casing and having their other edges free and spaced from the lnner side of said Arim portion, said partitions dividing the casing into three chambers, a tube located in each chamber and extending beyond the free edges of the partitions, and means to permit the tubes to be inated', said means being connected to the tubes at a point in spaced relation to the free edges of the partitions, so as to prevent injuring said means bybthe partitions on the compression of the tu e.
