Application led J une 6, 1916. 'Scria1No. 101,900.
To all 'whom it concern." Be it known that we, GEORGE SHEELY and Josa'rn H. SHEELY, both citizens .of the United States, and residents of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Sectional Vehicle-Tire, ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a new and `improved sectional vehicle tire, arranged to permit of replacing a worn out or injured section 'without disturbing more than the' adjacent sectionsand without jackthe tire 'is ing up of the wheel on which used. y
In order vto accomplish the desired result, use is made of a shoe or a casing, preferably made in twoor ymore sections and adaptedv to be fastened to the` rim of the vehicle wheel, sleeves fitting into the said shoeand inflatable inner segmental tubes each having closed ends and fitting into the corresponding ends of adjacent sleeves.
A. practical embodiment of the 'invention represented inthe accompanying drawings forming a. part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. F igurel is a face view of a vehicle wheel provided with the improved sectional tire; *ig 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 2&2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the inner tube sections;'Fig. 1 is an enlarged sectional plan view of one end of the same, the section being on the line H of Fig. 3; and F ig.' 5
' is a sectional side elevation of one o-f the sleeves; l
The shoe or casing of the vehicle t ire is preferably made in a number of sections 10 abutting at their ends and each section 10 is provided with the usual"beads or ribs` 11 adapted to be engaged with the flanges 12 of a clencher rim 13 -secured to the felly 14 of the wheel. Within the shoe sections 10 are arranged sleeves 15 breaking joints withx the shoe sections 10 and each having a transverse partition 16 intermediate the ends and preferably nearer one end than the other, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 5. Each end of the sleeve 15 is provided with a fiaring mouth 17 to permit convenient introduction o' inflatable innersegmental tubes 20 Specification of Letters Patent.
of which the followwhenever it is desired Patented Dee. 2 6, 191e.
each of'which fitsinto the corresponding end portions of closed ends 21 of the tubes sleeves with the 20 in close proxadjacent imity to the partitions 16. Each of the gether and'vulcanized so as to provide thev closed ends 21 above referred to.
It will be noticed that a vehicle tire constructed in the manner described permits o f conveniently removing tion l0 and replacing the same by a new one to do so and without requiring jacking up of the wheel. on which the tire is used. It will also be noticed that any of the sleeves 15 can be removed after the corresponding shoe sections have been removed, and the corresponding tube 20 can lbe removed from the adjacentremoved sleeves 15 in case said tube 2O is punctured or otherwise injured and requires mending or replacing by a new one. It is understood that for removing any one of the sections, the wheel 4is preferably turned until such section is in uppermostI position.
It is understood that by the arrangement described the sleeves l5 break joints with the shoe sections 10 andl the tubes 20 break joints with the sleeves 15 intowhich they t,'as above explained. The partitions'l in '6 0 10 are madein the' usual a worn out shoe seceach sleeve l5 can be readily formed of cord or threads passed by a needle through the sleeve in a transverse direction, but we do not limit ourselves to this m'ode of making the partition as the same Ina-y be woven directly into the sleeve while making the latter'.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent 1. A sectional vehicle tire, comprising a shoe, sleeves-fittinginto the said shoe with their open ends abutting; each sleeve having "a transverse partition intermediate its ends,
and Vinflatable inner segmental tubes having closed ends, eaeh tu-'be fitting into corre,- fand nearerbone end than the. other, and vinspondng ends of adjacent'sleeves vvth the atable inner segmental tubes having closed Closed ends at the said partitions. ends, each.. tubejitting intol corresponding :10 2. A sectional 'vehicle tire', ompr'ising a ends .of adjacentfsleeves with the elose'd ends 5 shoe, sleeves tting into the said shoe with at the said partitions.
` their open ends abutting, each sleeve having GEORGE? SHEEL a transverse partition intermediate1 its ends JOSEPHfH. SHEELY.
