Be it known that I, OTTO SCHUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residingat New York, in thecounty of New York and State essentially adapted for use with a plurality of pneumatic tubes, the tubes being provided with means forinflating one or any number of the tubes.-
The invention comprehends a valve formed of a plurality of segmental tubes, each tube being separable so that when one of the pneumatic tubes connected to the seg- -ments 1s punctured that particular tube canbe removed from the casing to facilitate' patchin of the tube.
The undamental object of the invention is to provide the segmental air inlet tubes with a removable device to lock them in assembled relations It also includes means coacting with the locking arrangement for firmly fastening the plurality of segmental tubes to the4 wheel rim.
v The novel features of the invention are more fully .described in the following speciication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a tire embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the segmental air inlet tubes. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of one of the segmental air tubes. Fi 4 is a horizontal sectionjtaken along ,the line of Fig. 2.
In this drawing the letter a designates a rim which is of the ordinary clencher type and is provided with a felly a to which the rim is clamped in the usual manner. An outer slitted tubular casing b is normally clenched to the rim as iswell known. This casing is provided with a pair of partitions or annular diaphragme o projecting from the inner portion of the thread toward the rim ortion of the casing. Connected to each pneumatic tube is an air inlet tube f extending outwardly through thev slitted casing and ahole in the rim of the wheel. Each air inlet tube represents a divisional medium communicating with a pneumatic tube for pumping air into one or all of the tubes. Each segmental tube is exteriorly screw threaded as shown atv g and the'adjacent portions of the tubes are angular as indicated in Fig. 4 in order to bunch or -nest the tubes together to form a cylinder with a number of bores. Coacting with the lower portions of the air segments is an adjustable sleeve i provided with interior threads for engagement Y with the threads of the segments. In this construction the sleeve will lock or firmly hold the tubes together in assembled formation before the valve is connected to the wheel rim. The lower portion of the sleeve has a flange 7' for coaction with the. inner walls of the casing adjacent to the slit. The sleeve also has lexterior' threads for engagement with a nut lc, bestseenin Fig. 1. The nut when in place will jam against the wheel rim and force the flange 7' onto the Walls of the casingr thus clamping or locking the sleeve with the segments securely to the wheel rim. The stem of the valve 'when in place projects through a hole in the felly and the threaded stems of the segments where they issue from the felly are engaged by a nut m' for alining, and preventing lateral displacement of the segments relative to the felly. l
Any form of spring air inlet valve p may be mounted in the bore of each' tube to prei vent the air from escaping from the tube. The air tubes can all be simultaneously inflated from a single pump so that the pressure in one air tube will equal the pressure in the other thus giving uniform resistance to the sides as Well as the tread of the tire.. The segmental tubes when clustered and locked together constitute practically a sinmental tubes have their innerends extending below the sleeve and two of the seg-v ments are positioned laterally to point in opposite directions from the straight end of the other tube.
It will be readily understood that when it is desired to repair a puncture in any of the pneumatic tubes, it will be necessary` to loosen the nut fm. and slide the rim with the segmental tubes through a slot formed l in the felly communicating with the hole.
In some wheel structures thek rim is immovable relative to the felly, and in a construetion of this kind the nut 7c 'can be omitted.
In this example the slitted casing b can be removed from the rim by removing the cap h and nut m, unclenching the casing,
then vdrawing the segmental tubes through the hole in the felly and rim.
I claim 1. A valve for pneumatic tires comprising a plurality of segmental separable air inlet tubes normally clustered together, andl a removable sleeve mounted on the tubes for locking the segments together.
2. A valve for pneumatic tires comprising a plurality of segmental separable air inlet tubes normally abutting against each other to form a cylinder, and a removable sleeve adjustably engaging the cylinder for vlocking the segments together.
3. A valve for pneumatic tires comprising a plurality of segmental threaded separable air inlet tubes normally clustered. together, and a sleeve having interior threads for engagement with the threads of the tubes.
4. A valve for pneumaticn tires comprising a plurality of segmental threaded separable air inlet tubes normally clustered together, a sleeve having interior threads for narra-ae engagement with the threads of the tubes, and means coacting with the sleeve for locking it to the wheel rim.
5. A valve for pneumatic tires comprising a plurality of segmental separable air inlet tubes normally fastened together each having a lower extension one projecting radially and the others laterally in opposite directions, a sleeve having interior threads for engagement withy the threads ot' the tubes, and means engaging the sleeve for locking it to the wheel rim.
6. A valve for pneumatic tires comprising a plurality of separable segmental threaded air inlet tubes normally clustered together, a sleeve `having interior and exterior threads, the former threads being for engagement with lthe threads of the tubes, and a nut made to engage the latter threads for locking the sleeve to a Wheel rim.
7. In a valve for pneumatic tires the conibination with a rim having a casing provided with a plurality of pneumatic tubes, of a segmental threaded air inlet tube connected to each pneumatic tube extending through the rim and, casing, a threaded sleeve to engage the threads of the segmental tubes, a nut to engage the sleeve and lock it to the rim.
8. In a valve for pneumatic tires the conibination with a rim having 'acasing provided vvith aplurality of pneumatic tubes, of a segmental threaded air. inlet tube connected to each pneumatic tube extending through the rim and casing, a threaded flanged sleeve to engage the threads of the segmental tubes, a nut to engage the sleeve and force the flange against the inner wall of the casing. y
