APPLICATION-FILED JULY 13. |916-` 1,216,556. Patented Feb. 20,1917.
O 4 l l l l' SMH-W NnnEw'E.rA1ELLA,roE JERSEY crrY, NEW JERSEY.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDREW E. Fnnmm, a citizen of the United States, and residing at J erse City, in the county 'of Hudson and State o New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dials for Watchesv and the like, of which the following is' a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which itAA appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to? dials vide adevice of this class whereby a picture, ornament, design or the like may be formed on, or secured to, the central portion of the dial; and a further object being to provide a device of this class wherein the hour and minute hands of the watch are concealed be hind the ornamental portion of the dial.
The invention is fully disclosedV in' the following specification, of whichthe accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference .characters in each of the views, and in which i Figure 1 is a face viewof a watch indicat- 1ng my improvement applied thereto;
- Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line 2-2 vof Fig. lsbut omitting the case of the watch and a part of the detailworks of the watch;
Fig. 3a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing only a part of theconstructionand showing the same on an enlarged scale;
Fig'. 4 a view similarto Fig. 2 but showny ing'a modified form of construction and on an enlarged scale, said 4figure 'being a section on the line -4 -4 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 5 a plan view of shown in Fig. 4on a reduced scale with part of the construction broken away; and,
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I have Ashown one form of my improved dial construction, and in Fig. 1 I have indicated at a the casing of a watch having the usual stem a and open' f ace as.' Mounted in theA casing ais the usual framework construction b in whichthe works ofthe watch are mounted, said4 frame consisting of a top plate b2 and a pillarplate b3, and-mounted between the platesb2l and bf.
one gear e is the usual ,watch mechanism. onlfyx1 and pinion b* and b5 ofv whichis s own, said gear and pinion being mounted on the usual arbor c of the'watch which is mounted be'- speeumuen er Lenen hun.
for watches4 and the'llke, and the object thereof is to prothe construction null ron. WATCHES m THE LIKE.

appuee'nen mea my 1s. 191e. sel-mm. 109,161.
tween the plates b and b, andwhich exe tends forwardly or in the direction of the lface of the watch in the usual manner.
In the practice of my invention, I provide the arbor c with a centralbore c in which is mounted'a pin c3, the inner end ofwhich is secured in a washer c* which isvsecured to the top plate b2 ,by screwsv c", as clearly shownin Fig. 2, and the front endof the pin c3 extends beyond the end of the arbor c and is-threaded as shown at c.
Secured to the front of the plate b3 is a circular dial member d, the iimer portion of which is depressed as shown at d, and see cs is a'central dial member d, the front face of which is Aprovided with 'a sheet d* on which is a photograph, said sheet being secured to the central dial membend"I in any desired manner, and between the central dialniember d and the circular dial member d is an annular space d, this construction being clearly shown in Figs.'1, 2 and 3.
. With the :construction shown in Figs. 1
7ol c'ured to the threaded extension c of the pin to 3, I employ the usual cannon pinion e and Y j hour wheel e* mounted thereon, and mounted on`th`e hour wheel e2 is the hour hand e which, the construction shown, is bayonet in form as shown at 'e in Fig. 2, and mount# ed on the sleeve extension of the cannon pinion is the minute hand e,'which is bayof the perimeter of the dial -member As shown in` Fig.' 1 the dialmember d 1s providedfwith numerals and lines indicatin Ethe hours and minutes in connection wit which the hour-and minute hands operate 1n the usual manner. It will also be seen that the central dial member d", with the pictu're thereon, is notdefaced by the hands of the watch due to the location thereof, andyet the time may be readily determinedby sald hour and minute hands without any eiort on the part of the owner.
In the construction shownin Figs. 4 and 5 the hour wheel e, or the sleeve portion thereof, is extended'to the end of the arbor c and the sleeve portion Yof the `cannon portion and to within a short distance from Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing .i
only a partof the construction and showing another modification.
of the sleeve of the hour wheel is a pinion f having a sleeve portion f2 `on which is mounted the minute `hand 65.1 Mounted on the sleeve portion of the hour wheel e2 be the hour hand e3, and in this construction the ,outer end of the hour hand is bent to form a hook-shaped portion e7, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The -perimeter of the central dial member da is provided with an hour indicating strip or portion d inconnection with which the hook-shaped portion e7 and the hour hand e3 operates, as clearly shown in Figs. 4: and 5, and the minute hand e5 operates in connection with the dial member d,
i having, in the construction shown, the indications of' the minutes of an hour. Between thewdial member d and the central dial member Z3 is a space d? similar to the space d5 in the construction shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted on the plate b3 is a pinion g which meshes with the hour wheel e2, and mounted in connection with the pinion g is a gear g2 which meshes with the pinion f on the sleeve portion of the hour wheel e2, and by means of this construction the minute hand may be mounted within the hour hand so as to permit the said hour'hand to operate on the inner dial member da as In Fig. 6 of the drawing the minute hand and hour hand are mounted on the arbor c in the usual manner, or as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, but the pin c3 is not employed and the central dial-member (Z3 has no connection with the arbor c but said central dial member is connected with the circular dial member d at intervals by webs or arms d8 uwhich are connected with the perimeter of the diall member (Z, and which are bent to form spaces h between the same and said dial member d, as clearly shown, and the outer end portions of the minute and hour hands operate in said spaces h, as clearly shown v and the; arrangement. of hour Vand minute indicating means will be the same as 1n Fig. 1. l-The only difference between this construction and the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive is jthat the pin c is omitted and-thecentral dial member d is supported by web or arm membersl d,` Y,
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the specicconstruction fof the minute and hour` hands,`or .the operating means therefor, as my improved dial construction maybe employed in connection with watches, clocks and the .like of various kinds and classes, as will be readily understood. The chief feature of this invention is to provide watches, clocks and the like with a centralv dial member which is not interrupted or defaced by the minute and hour hands of such devices. Changes in and modifications of the details of .construe-z claims, Without departing from the spirit V of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. yond the sleeve portion f2 of the pinion f is Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f 1. In a time piece, a central dial member having a smooth unobstructed upper surface by the pillar plate of the time piece and spaced away from the central member, said `outer member being provided wlith numerals and lines designating minutes and hours, and a minute hand and hour hand mounted in the rear of said central member and extending through the space between the members to coperate with the outer dial member.
v 3'. In a time piece, a central dial member supported by the central structure of the upper surface upon which a photograph or the like may be mounted, an outer dial member supported by the pillar plate of the time piece and provided with numerals and lines designating minutes and hours, said outer `member being spaced away from the central member, and a minute hand and hour hand mounted in the lrear of the central member and extending through the space to coperate with the outer dial member.
4. `In a device of the class described, a central dial member mountedin front of the minute and hour hands of a watch whereby said dial member may serve as an ornament supporting means, and an outer dial member provided with numerals and lines designating' minutes and hours between which and said central dial member is an annular space through which said minute and hour hands operate. U
