ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,664, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed June 1 l, 1 89 8.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WALTER HAY- WARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Norwich, in the county of Norfolk, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to advertising devices; and the object thereof is to provide-an improved device of this class 'which is simple in construction and operation and which is particularly adapted for use in groceries and other business houses, a further object being to provide an advertising device which is attractive to the eye and which is designed to command theattention of the observer; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is-a front view of my improved advertising device; Fig 2, a back view with the casing removed, showing the operative mechanism thereof; and Fig. 3, a side View thereof looking in the direction of the arrow X.
In the practice of my invention I provide two similar trains of gear-wheels, the first of which are designated by the reference-letters A, A and A and the second by the reference-letters B, B and B The wheels of the first train are mounted on shafts a, a and a and the shaft a is provided with a springdrum 0, and the shafts a and a are each provided with a pinion a and the wheel A operates in connection with the pinion a on the shaft a and the wheel A operates in connection with the pinion a on the shaft a and above the wheel A is a shaft D, provided with a pinion d, which is operated by the wheel A The second train of wheels B, B and B are mounted on corresponding shafts 1), b and b respectively, and the shafts b and b are each provided with a pinion b and the wheel B operates in connection with the pinion 011 the shaft 12 while the wheel B operates in connection with the pinion on the shaft b Above and a little to the left of the shaft b is a shaft G, provided with a pinion g, which is operated by the wheel B and said shaft G is also provided with an escapemen t-wheel g and said wheels and shafts are all mounted in a suitable frame, consisting of sides E and E and connected with the upper portion of the side E of said frame is a short arm F, with which is pivotally connected an escapement j, which operates in connection with the escapement-wheel g and with which is connected a downwardly-directed arm f which is similar to the pendulum of an ordinary clock, the pendulum being removed. The shaft G is supported by an arm g and the outer side E of the frame, said arm being secured to said side of the frame, and mounted in said frame to the left of and a little above the pivotal support of the escapementfis a shaft M, with an escapement formed by an upwardlydirected arm m and a downwardly-directed arm m each of which is provided with a hook or projection m and this escapement or the arms m and m operate in connection with pins 0, secured to the wheel A and said shaft M is provided with an up wardly-directed arm or lever m which is provided with a yokeshaped end m and the shaft G, with which the escapement-wheel g is connected, is provided with a crank 9 which passes through said yoke-shaped portion of the arm or lever m The advertising device is preferably provided with a base P, as shown in Fig. 1, above which is a casing P, which incloses all the parts of the apparatus shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and said casing is provided with a circular face or dial plate P through the center of which the shaft D projects, and said shaftv D is provided with a pointer R. The circular face. or dial plate P is also provided with an annular space S around the perimeter thereof, in which are placed for the purposes of this description the words you, groceries, u u y, :6 61s,! ing, here, life, and your. The sentence intended to be pointed out by the pointer R is written or placed upon a ring made of tin or other suitable substance. This ring is movable and reversible and is suspended in any desired manner and hangs in the annular space S (shown in Fig. 1) and shows the subject-matter thereon as though it were displayed on the dial-plate P and by means of the shaft Gr and the crank g, which forms a part thereof, the arm or lever in is given an oscillating motion, which causes the arms on and m to operate alternately in connection with the pins on the wheel A and this wheel is stopped each time that one of said arms comes in connection with one of said pins, and the pointer R on the shaft D is correspondingly operated, said pointer being given an intermittent motion.
In the construction here shown the wheel A is provided with eighty-four teeth and the pinion d of the shaft D is provided with twelve teeth, and said shaft D is provided with a vertically-movable brake J, which rests thereon and is designed to prevent irregular motion of said shaft caused by the sudden stop of the wheel A occasioned by the arms at and m This brake may be of any desired form or construction and may or may not be employed; but I prefer to employ the same for the purposes above specified. By means of this gearing and the pins 0 on the wheel A the pointer R is given twelve stops to one revolution of the wheel A the number of said pins being six; but it will be apparent that this construction and arrangement may be modified to suit the form of advertisement employed.
The pointer B may be so set that the first movement thereof will end at the word Is, the second at the word life, the third at the word worth, and the fourth at the word living, these successive movements of said pointer resultingin successively pointing out the words of the sentence Is life worth living? and the next movement of the pointer will end at the word Yes, the next at the word if, the next at the word you, the next at the word buy, the next at the word your, the next at the word groceries, and the next at the word here, thus successively pointing out the words of the sentence Yes, if you buy your groceries here.
It will be. understood that the pointer R moves always in the same direction, stopping successively at the words required by the construction of the sentence to be pointed out. Thus for the above sentence eleven stops would be made, one over each of the respective words, and a twelfth stop would also be made at the top of the dial. Before making the twelfth and final stop the pointer in the construction shown revolves two and a quarter times, the last word pointed out being here, ninety degrees from the top of the dial.
Instead of forming the sentenceintended to be pointed out by the pointer R in the circular space S of the dial-plate, as herein described, I may employ an annular ring or plate, which is detachably and reversibly mounted in said space, on which the words of said sentence will be placed, and said annular ring or plate may be composed of tinvor anysnitable substance and may be suspended from a hook or any suitable support.
It will be apparent that this form of advertisement may be provided to suit any particular business, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
