Description

G. W. FISKE.
REFILLABLE INDICATING FUSE.
APPLlCATlON FILED FEB. Z. 1915.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. FISKE, OF AKRON, OHIO.
REFILLABLE INDICATING-FUSE.
Application filed February 2, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. Frsnn, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Refillable Indicating- Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in electric circuit fuses and proof and which at the same time serves to indicate by an external means whether the fuse Wire has been blown or melted.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a refillable fuse which is simple in construction, durable, cheap to manufacture and one which is efiective in its use.
With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved refillable fuse;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the fuse and the means for indicating the same and the circuit terminals; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the circuit terminals which I employ in the preferred form of my'invention.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, I provide a receptacle indicated generally by the numeral 1 and having an intermediate portion 2 and end portions 3 and 4. The intermediate portion 2 of the receptacle 1 is preferably of an insulating fireproof material and the end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
Serial No. 5,730.
caps of portions 3 and 4 are preferably formed of metal such as brass, copper or the like. The intermediate portion 2 is secured to the end caps 3 and 4 by means of rings The said intermediate portion 2 is received between the rings 5 and the capsll and 4, and screws 6 are passed therethrough and are in threaded engagement with the rings 5 whereby to permanently join the three sections 2, 3 and 4 of the receptacle 1. The intermediate portion 2 of the receptacle 1 is provided substantially intermediate its length with an elongated opening 7 for a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth.
Mounted upon and adapted for rotation around the saidvintermediate portion 2 1. provide an outer casing 3 said outer casing 8 being disposed between the marginal edges 9 of the cap portions 3 and 4, said outer casing 8 being provided withan elongated opening 10 adapted for registration, at
times, with the opening 7 in the interme diate portion 2. in order to facilitate access to the interior of the receptacle 1. the marginal edges 9 of the said caps 3 and 4 allowing of rotary movement of the casing 8 relative to the portion 2 but preventing lon gitudinal movement of the said outer casing 8. The caps 3 and 4 are electrica ly connected to the terminals of an electric circuit by means of the blades 3 and 4 as is common in this type of fuse.
Circuit terminals 11 and 12 are provided in the receptacle 1, said circuit terminals 11 and 12 being mounted upon the caps 3 and 4 and disposed substantially in a central longitudinal line of the receptacle 1. One of the circuit terminals, namely 11. is preferably mounted for slidable movement relative to the receptacle 1 as indicated to advantage in Fig. 2. A coil spring 13 is secured to the slidably mounted circuit terminal 11 for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent. In order to slidably mount the circuit terminal 11. the cap 3 is provided at substantially diametrically opposite points in its wall with a pair of slots 14. The said circuit terminal 11 is preferably T-shaped in contour as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4. the body por tion 15 thereof extending longitudinal of the receptacle 1 and having laterally extending portions 16 terminating in handles 17. the said transverse portions 16 extending through the slots 14. and are adapted for slidable movement therein. In order to prevent lateral movementof the slidable circuit terminal 11, I provide a pair of lugs 18 formed upon the transverse portions 16, said lugs 18 being disposed externally of the cap 3, one of said lugs being bent upwardly and the other of said lugs being bent downwardly to embrace the wall of the cap 3 whereby to prevent lateral movement of the circuit terminal. The coil spring 13 has one of its ends secured to the cap 3 at the point 19 and the other end thereof secured to the circuit terminal 11 as indicated at 20. wire 21 is provided, the ends of said fuse wire being in engagement with the circuit terminals 11 and 12 and disposedbetween the same, said fuse wire being of such a length as to cause the spring 13 to be distended as indicated to advantage in Fig.
2 when fastened. Any suitable means may be employed to fasten the fuse wire to the circuit terminals 11 and 12, however, I have provided screws said screws 22 extending through the fuse wire 21 and thereby securing'the same to the circuit terminals 12. It will thus be seen that at all times there is a strain upon the fuse wire 21 so that when the fuse becomes melted the two sections thereof will be drawn apart. In order to convey the current from. the cap 3 to the circuit terminal 11 T provide a flexible conductor 23 having one end secured to the casing or cap 3 at the point 21 and the other end thereofin electrical connection with the circuit terminal 11 as indicated at 25.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of my invention may be had and that its advantages will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art. "When the fuse becomes severed owing to the melting or blowing of the same the spring 13 will draw the circuit terminal 11 in a direction toward the inner end of the cap 3. It will thus be seen that the fragments of the fuse carried by the circuit terminals 11 and 12 will be separated such a distance as to obviate any possibility of arcing or fusing at their points. \Vhen it is desired to renew or repair the fuse the outer casing S is rotated upon the portion 2 of the receptacle 1 until the opening 10 in the casing 8 registers with the opening 7 in the portion 2. This will afford easy access to the interior of the receptacle and the fuse may be readily renewed by this process/ When the fuse is blown, the explosion of the wire invariably resulting in such a case cannot affect combustibles surrounding the fuse. since the fuse when repaired is inclosed in a practically fire proof receptacle. The laterally extending handle portions 17 indicate when the fuse is blown and also serve as a means to force the circuit erminal 11 into a. position for renewing the use.
A fuse the circuit has been broken owing to the fuse blowing. This however is a feature which would be determined by the manufacturer of the device.
While it have shown and described my in vention as possessing a peculiar form and construction it isdesired that it be understood that T may make such changes in the detail structure thereof, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
