Description

ARL WELLS, F' PI'ITSBURG-HJ PENNSYLVANIA.
PLUG-FUSE.
mancia Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten aan. ie, i915..
' Application mea March e, 1914. serial No. 822,968.
.I To all whom t may concern 1 3e it known that I, EARL W. lVnLLs, aY citizen of the United States, residing at 950z Beech avenue, Pittsburgh, N.
county'of Allegheny and State of Pennsylva.nia, have invented new and useful Im- -provements in 'Plug-Fuses, of which the following is a specication.
,This invention 'relates to iihproveiiient in plug fuses for electric currents and has particular application to a refillable .plug fuse.-
is my purpose to Vprovide a fuse of the'class -described whereby in the event of thefuse wire burning out, such wire may be readily and conveniently renewed or replaced .and wherein good electrical contact will be maintained when the fuse i intact. v
It is also my purpose to rovide a refillable plug fuse which will embrace the" desired ea'tures of simplicity, efficiency and durab lity, which mayl be manufactured and marketed at a minimum expense and which may b e vquickly and conveniently applied.
with the above ana other Objects in l yiew, the invention consists in the construction, combination and hereinafter set Vforth in the scope of the claims'.`
, In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a plug fuse constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig is a vtransverse sectional view through the same.
Referring now to the drawinghin detail, 1 designatesl a substantially cup-s aped body preferably composed of insulating material and having the closed end thereof for-med with anaxi'al opening 2 and an eccentrically disposed opening 3. These openings are lined with suitable material such as brass rings L1, while threaded into the ring in the axial opening 2 is a Contact screw o.
Contiguous the closed end thereof the side,
wall of the cup-shaped body 1 is screwthreaded and surroundingv the same and en gaging the threads thereon isv an annular 'shell G adapted to be threaded into the socket or receptacle for receiving the fuse plug. The side wall of the body 1 at the upper lend thereof is formed with 'a cir.- cumferential bead 7 onto which is threaded s., in' the -b arrangement 'of parts' in-and falling with- .the annular flange 8 of a capv9, such cap being provided witha transparent window ldcloing the open endl ofthe cup-shaped o yV l i 'The inner wall of the body 1 is formed with a longitudinal'groove'll .and seated within the groove is one limbof a right angular bracket 12, the oppositeA limb of lsuch bracket extending toward the center of the body and is formed with an aperture into which is threaded a binding l. screw 13. Formedin the side wall of the In carryingout the present invention, .it
adjac'ent limb of `the right angular bracket 12 is a securing screw 15 having the outer or headed end thereof equipped with .,a
washer 16 bearing upon the adjacent por-y tion ofthe shell '6 and acting to maintain thev latter' in, position on the body.
, 17 designates a' fusible wire and one end of thisw'ire is wrapped about the shank of the lbinding screw adjacent limb of of such wire is disposed headed end of the contact screw 5 and secured to the'body bymeans of such screw.
F rom the foregoing description taken in connection witlrlthe accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my improved fuse will be readily apparent. The fuse plug is inserted within the receptacle or socket in the usual manner and in the event of a, heavy current passing 'over'..the line the fusible wire 17 blows out vor melts thereby breaking the circuit and protecting the fixtures or translating devices. To replace the lfusible wire,- the latter is passed through the eccentric opening 3 and the inner end thereof se-Y cured to the binding screw 18, while the outer end isfastened in position by means of the contact. screw 5. Thus, the fuse plug may be replaced within the receptacle and the circuit restablished.
I claim: A rellable plug fuse comprising a cupshaped body having an axial opening and an eccentrically disposed opening in the closed end wall thereof and having a longitudinal groove formed on the inner side 13 and secured upon the the bracket 12 by means screw, while theopposite end of the thereof: a right angular bracket having one 110 trained through the eccentrically opening 3 and. wrapped about the'-- end connected'with szid binding screwand the opposite end passed through saidec- `centrically disposed opening and secured to 10 said Contact, a threaded shell surrounding said body, and a headed securing screw passed through the sidewall of said body and engaging the limb of said bracket Within the groove and having the head thereof engaging said shell to hold the lat- 15 ter onto the body."
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa-- ture in presence of two Witnesses.
