To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SAoHs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Fuse-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fuse-plugs adapted for use in connection with electric cut-out blocks; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this class in which the fuse wire or strip is inclosed and preferably surrounded by a filling, and therefore free from liability of arcing, and at the same time one in which the fuse after being blown is renewable, if so desired.
In carrying out my invention I employ. a casing of metal, preferably cylindrical, a portion of which is screw-threaded, a disk of insulating material secured in the screwthreaded end of the casing, a contact secured centrally in said disk, a cap of insulating material fitting over the opposite end of the easing, means for securing said cap to the casing so that the same is readily removable, a cylinder of insulating material fitting closely within said casing, and electrical and mechanical connections, including a fuse wire or strip between the said casing and the said contact in the disk of insulating material.

Fig. 4 is a central vertical section illustrating a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 1 and including a filling material, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the same. a represents the casing or shell of metal of good conductivity, preferably cylindrical, and having a portion thereof provided with screw-threads by which the fuse-plug is re.
ceived in the cut-out block. The screwthreaded end of the casing a is provided with a disk of insulating material I), in which centrally is secured a button 0 or other suitable contact device. The opposite end of the shell or casing a is provided with a yoke (1, preferably extending diametrically across the same and integral therewith or electrically connected thereto, and this end of the casing is also provided with a cap cl, of insulating material, into which this end of the casing fits.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the casing a may be provided with fingers or extensions 2 3 and the cap (1 with apertures 4 and a recess connecting the same, and the fingers 2 3 are passed through the apertures 4 and bent down within the said recess in the cap, overlapping one another and secured together by a drop of solder or otherwise, thereby connecting the cap to the case and at the same time making the said parts readily separable, and the recess may then be filled with wax or other suitable insulating material. I also employ a cylinder 6 or lining of insulating material closely fitting within the casing or shell a and extending between the disk 6 and the yoke Extending longitudinally within the cylinder 0, of insulating material, is a fuse wire or strip which is suitably connected at one end to the yoke a and at the other end in the button or contact 0.
As shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, I may dispense with the fingers or extensions 2 3 and employ screws 5, passing through the cap (1 and extending into the yoke a, whereby the said cap and shell aresecurely fastened together. In Fig. 1 I have shown the fusestrip connected to fuse-terminals 6; but it will be readily understood that the fuse-terminals may be dispensed with and the ends of the fuse-strips connected electrically in the yoke a, and contact a, respectively, by being soldered therein or otherwise. It is also to be understood that I may employ a filling h, of insulating and non-heat-conducting material, surrounding the fuse-strip and filling the cylinder 6, of insulating material, as shown in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention 1. A fuse-plug, comprising a casing having a portion thereof provided with screwthreads, a disk of insulating material secured in the screw-threaded end of the casing, an electrical contact secured centrally in said disk, a yoke integral with and extending across the opposite end of the casing, a cap of insulating material fitting over this end of the casing, means for securing together the said casing and cap in their relation to one another, a fuse-strip within the casing and extending between said yoke and electrical contact, and electrical and mechanical connections between the said fuse and yoke and electrical contact.
2. A fuse-plug comprising a casing having a portion thereof provided with screwthreads, a disk of insulating material secured in the screw-threaded end of the casing, an electrical contact secured centrally in said disk, a yoke in electrical contact with wa extending across the opposite end of the easing, a cap of insulating material fitting over this end of the casing and having holes therein, fingers integral withsaid casing and adapted to extend through the holes in the cap to be turned down thereon to secure the said parts together in relation to one another, a fuse within the casing, and electrical and mechanical connections between the said fuse and yoke and electrical contact.
3. A fuse-plug, comprising a casing having a portion thereof provided with screwthreads, a disk of insulating material secured in the screw-threaded end of the casing, an electrical contact secured centrally in said disk, a yoke in electrical contact with and extending across the opposite end of the easing, a cap of insulating material fitting over this end of the casing, and having holes therein, fingers integral with said casing and adapted to extend through the holes in the cap to be turned down thereon to secure the said parts together in relation to one another, a fuse within the casing, an insulating filling material within said casing and surrounding the said fuse, and electrical and mechanical connections between the said fuse and the said yoke and electrical contact.
4. A fuse-plug, comprising a casing having a portion thereof provided with screwthreads, a disk of insulating material secured in the screw-threaded end of the casing, an
electrical contact secured centrally in said disk, a yoke in electrical contact with and extending across the opposite end of the easing, a cap of insulating material fitting over this end of the casing, and having holes therein, fingers integral with said casing and adapted to extend through the holes in the cap to be turned down thereon to secure the said parts together in relation to one another, a cylinder of insulating material fitting closely within said casin g, a fuse within the cylinder, and electrical and mechanical connections between the said fuse and electrical contact.
5. A fuse-plug, comprising a casing having a portion thereof provided with screwthreads, a disk of insulating material secured in the screw-threaded end of the casing, an electrical contact secured centrally in said disk, a yoke in electrical contact with and extending across the opposite end of the easing, a cap of insulating material fitting over this end of the casing, and having holes therein, fingers integral with said casing and adapt ed to extend through the holes in the capto be turned down thereon to secure the said parts together in relation to one another, a cylinder of insulating material fitting closely within said casing, a fuse within the cylinder, an insulating filling material within said cyl inder and surrounding the said fuse, and electrical and mechanical connections between the said fuse and the said yoke and electrical contact.
