Be it known that l, FRANK A. MERTZ, a
- citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of the Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved NonRefillable Bottle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to non-refillable bottles of that type having la plurality of ball valves which serve `effectively to check the refilling of the bottle.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of-anparatus of the character referred to, so as to be reliable and eilicient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed that the liquid can readily flow out but reiilling is prevented.
A more specilic object of the invention is the provision of a stopper of the class described, the parts of which are assembled before being inserted in the bottle neck, and then by simply pushing the device into the bottle neck, the same automatically locks, the various parts of the device being so con-l structed as to be comparatively simple to make and easy to assemble.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.

bore, and adjacent the inner portion of the neck is an internal annular shoulder 3 with which the non-refilling device is adapted to automatically interlock.
The device comprises an outer sleeve or holding section A and an inner chambered valve-containing section B. rlhe outer section is in the form of a cylindrical body or sleeve 4 somewhat shorter than the length of the bottle neck, and on the inner end it is provided with spring hooks or anchoring means 5 which have bills 6 that are adapted to interlock under the shoulder 3. In inserting the device into the bottle neck the members 5 yield toward each other, and as soon as the bills reach the shoulder 3 they spring apart and thereby automatically lock the device in the bottle neck. rl`he outer end of the body 4 has a cap-like hood 7 which fits around the outside of the bottle neck, and in the top part of this hood is a washer 8 which is held under compression by the hook G engaging under the shoulder 3. The top of the body 4 has a pour-out opening 9 which is adapted to be closed by any suitable stopper that is readily removable when the contents is to be poured out.
The inner section B is composed of a cylindrical upper member 10, a lower cylindrical member 11, and a coupling member 12. The upper member 10 is chambered, andv has a closed top 13, and in the side walls are ports 14. The bottom of the member 10 is open and is formed with an internal thread, so that the threaded extremity 15 of the coupling 12 can screw into it. The coupling has a central passage or bore 16, the upper portion of which terminates in a conical seat 17 for receiving the ball valve 18 in the chambered member 10. This ball valve is inserted before the member 10 is screwed on the coupling 12, whereby the ball is retained in place. The bottom portion of the coupling 12 has a thread 19 which screws into the lower chambered member 11, and on the lower end of the coupling are lugs 20 which prevent the lower ball valve 21 in the member 11 from closing the passage 16 in the coupling when the bottle is inverted to pour out its contents, as shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of the member 11 has a port 22 and a valve seat 23 adjacent the port for receiving the valve 21 when the bottle is upright. The circumferential wall of the member 11 is imperforate and has an external thread 24 for screwing into the v invention appertains and While I have de-V threaded open bottom 25 of the body 4c of the device. I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a bottleneck having an internalshoulder, a device for preventing reflling, said device comprising an outer section in the form of a sleeve provided With spring anchoring members on the inner end to interlock with the shoulder of the bottle neck and having an external hood on the outer end for engaging around the bottle neck, and an inner section screwed into the outer section, and said inner seetion consisting of tWo chambered members and a coupling threaded into the members, and ball valves in the chambered members, the inner chambered member having a port. the coupling having a passage, and the upper chambered member having ports in its side.
2. The combination of a bottle neck having an internal shoulder, With a device for preventing refilling, said device comprising an outer section fitting in the bottle neck and having spring members for engaging the shoulder to retain the device in place, and an inner section composed of t-Wo chambered members and a coupling uniting the members, a valve seat on the upper end of the coupling, a valve seat in the bottom of the inner chambered member, a passage in the coupling, a
port in the bottom of the inner member, a, ball valve in each chambered member, ports in the side Wall of the upper chambered member, there being an annular space between the inner and outer section and above the point Where the inner section is fastened in the outer section, and lugs on the bottom of the coupling for preventing the ball in the loWer chambered member from closing the passage in the coupling.
