Description

(54.) EPHRAIM S. JOHNSON,
Improvement in Ornamentihg Penci! Cases.
N0. 121,627. Patented Dec.5,1871.
PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIM S. JOHNSON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTING PENCIL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,627, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM S. JOHNSON, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Pencil-Gases; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
Pencil-cases, knife-handles, &c., have been made of pearl, but dealers and workers in this material know that pearl has its bright side and also its dark side; and hence where solid pieces are employed the appearance of one side is very tached, and the surface thereof turned off, filed, '18
or finished said pencil-case being a new and useful article of manufacture that is much superior to anything before made, because the full beauty of the pearl is brought out all around the case, the
slabs can be attached with great facility, and the finishing up can be done with little expense.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section in en larged size of the said case, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The metal tube a is made as the foundation upon which the slabs b of pearl are attached, said tube a having a prismatic shape, being in section a polygon of six sides, or any other desired number of sides; and upon each of the sides a slab of mother-of-pearl is applied and caused to adhere by shellac or other suitable material. The surface of the pearl is turned, filed, or finished in any usual manner, and presents the bright side of the pearl, and the handsome appearance consequent thereon, to the eye.
I claim as my invention As an article of manufacture, a pencil or pencase made of a metal tube with flat surfaces, receiving slabs of mother-of-pearl attached and finished, as set forth.
Signed by me this 1st day of September, A. l). 71.
