To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, ANNA It. PoT'rs and i .Inssn M. CROW, residents of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and'State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids-Bed Attachments, of which the following is a speciication.

Our invention relates to an attachment for beds for'the use of invalide, which facili tates their movement into various positions and provides a table for writing or reading purposes in connection therewith.

The objects of our invention are, first, to provide a device of this class, which is adjustable throughout for different sized bed frames and for different sized invalids, second, to provide a device of this class which combines an adjustable table, back rest or support and exerciser for invalids, third, to provide such a device that is simple of construction, durable and sanitary, fourth, to provide such a device that is readily made applicable for different sized and shaped beds or bed frames and, fth, to provide a back rest that is automatic with the movement of the invalid.

With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings .and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device, complete, shown mounted on a fragmentary portion'of the side rails of a bed frame, Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, Fig. 3 is a detailed side elevational view of the back rest clamp with parts broken away and in section to facilitate the illustration, Fig. 4 is a detailed side and sectional view of one of the means for attaching our device to the bed frame and Fig. 5 is a detailed side view of a fragmentary portion of the table and its support.

The bed frame attachments 1, vertical supports 2, top horizontal support 3, swing 4, table 5, table support 6, back rest 7 lower back rest support 8, upper back rest support 9. and back rest clamp l() constitute the principal parts of our invalids bed attachment.

The bed frame attachments l are composed of pieces of channel iron which are adapted to fit `over the vertical member of the bed angle or over the side of a bed providing the bed has other side pieces besides angle iron. Mounted vertically on the middle of this channel iron is a tube 1b, which `extends upwardly to approximately the height of the top of the mattress on the bed andthis tube is supported by means of a brace 1C extending from the end of the angle iron to near the top of this tube 1b. Inside this tube lh is provided a compression spring ld andy mounted over said tube lb is the latch la, which extends down through the upper horizontal member of the channel iron and rests against the side of the vertical side piece A of the bed frame. In case, however, this side rail A of the bed isv reversed so that the horizontal member is above, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, there is provided a special clamp consisting of the piece 1f, which extends over the horizontal member of the side rail A and through a slot 1g in the channel iron and extends downwardly spaced apart from the vertical member of said side rail, and another U shaped piece 1h which iits over the lower side of the vertical member of said side rail and extends up between the said side rail and the extended piece 1f. The two are clamped to gether by means of a Ithumb screw 1i the extended member of l being slotted to allow for adjustment. Mounted in these bed frame attachments which are placed one on each side ofthe bed frame are the vertical supports 2, which are adapted to fit into the upper end of these tubes lb of these bed frame attachments. They are each provided adjacent to the top end of these tubes 1b with a right angled extension consisting of a tube 2a. In the lower surface of this tube 2*L is provided aspring 2b, which ts in notches in the lower surface of the tube members 8 which fit into the tube 2a and hold the same in its relative position thereto. Mounted between these two vertical supports 2 is the table 5, which is provided with lugs 5a which fit loosely around the table support 6. This table support 6 consists of two tubes one of which is inserted inside of the other so that lthey telescope therein and are held in certain relative positions by means of a spring latch 6a. This Vspring Alatch is shown best in Fig. of theV drawing. On the inner surface of the support 2 are provided a plurality of notches 2 and the ends of the supports 6 are provided with an extended Vportion adapted to conform to the notches 2C in the tubes so that when placed in said notches at their extended portion and then allowed to drop into the narrow portion said notches and extended portions secure this support 6 in its position. This spring latch 6 is provided with a downwardly extending tube 6b and with a slot in its lower lend adapted for the table adjusting rod V5a. This tube is also Vprovided with a spring 6C adapted to hold the table adjustingrod 5a down so that the notches 5b therein engage with tlieedge of the slot for adjusting the table to the proper f tilt on its support. This rod 5 may be removed by releasing the spring latch 5, which engages with a notch around the surface of the vpivot 5d on one corner of the table 5. Mounted in the tops of these tubes 2 is the top horizontal support 3` which consists of three tubes 3, 3, and 3% The tubes 3 and 3 are L-shaped, one member. of each of which extends into one of the tubes 2 and their other members extend into the tube 3a so that the tubes 3 are telescopically mounted in the tube 3L to provide for adl'just-nient of this bar for different width bed frames. This center piece 3a is provided with a slot horizontally therein in the middle thereof; which is adapted to conform to the vertical end of the support 9 so that when the support 9 is tui-ned at right angles to its position, as shown in Fig. l, it may be inserted into this slot to the position de- ;sired, there being several notches 9a iii the end adapted for adjusting it relatively to said top horizontal support and when turned in the position as shown in F ig. l is held therein. Mounted on this top horizontal support is a swing et, which is .composedl o two short ropes or cables 4@ and a cross tube adapted for the hand hold of the invalid. This swing is for the purpose of the person taking hold of the same and raising himself into the position desired. the back rest is controlled by the pressure against its upper surface so that When the invalid desires to be raised slightly he may do so by simply pulling himself up by the swing 4 and the back rest moves with him and is held in position as soon as pressure is brought to bear against it.

Having thus described our invention What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a bed attachment for invalids, lthe combination of readily attachable and detachable vertical supports, a horizontal bar telescopically mounted in the upper ends of said supports and a back rest adjustably mounted on said supports and said horizontal bar.

2. In a bed attachment for invalids, the combination of supports adapted to be readily secured to the sides of a bed frame, vertical supports mounted therein, a horizontal bar telescopically mounted in the upper ends of said supports and a back rest adjustably mounted on said supports and said horizontal bar.

3. In a bed attachment for invalids7 the combination of readily attachable and detachable vertical supports, a horizontal bar telescopically mounted in the upper ends of said supports, another horizontal bar mounted intermediate the ends of said supports, a back rest pivotally mounted on said llast mentioned bar and means connecting the upper end of said back rest With said first mentioned bar tending to move said back rest to a vertical position When the Weight is relieved therefrom.
