Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 7, 1916. Serial No. 70,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, county of Barry, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Paper-Curing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper curing machines.
In lithographic work and the like it is necessary that the paper shall be properly cured or temperedl, otherwise there is difficulty in securing the registration of the several imprints.
The main objects of this invention are? First, to provide an improved machine for curing or tempering. paper. which is very effective or efficient and substantially all of the paper is evenly cured or tempered.
Second, to provide a structure-of the'class described which is of large capacity and very convenient to use.
Third, to provide a device of the class described which is compact and simple and economical in structure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structurewhich is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawin forming a part of this specification, in which:

To make the frame rigid the uprights are extended above the side bars 2 andtheir upper ends connected by longitudinal and cross top bars if and 5, respectively. Diagonally disposed bracing rods 6 are provided, the bracing rods having turn buckles 7 7 whereby they may be tightened. Thus arranged, I secure a very rigid. frame and at the same time one which is formed of comparatively light material. Y j
In the modification shown in Fig. .Vthe uprights 8 are suspended from ceiling plates 9.
The side bars 2. and the end bars 3 of'the frame are arranged in the same relation as inFig. I.
I provide paper hangers comprising hanger bars 10 arranged in spaced pairs on the side bars of the frame. These hanger bars are connected to the side bars 2 by suitable. couplings. The hanger bars of the structure shown in Fig. I are also tubular. On these hanger bars I arrange a series. of hanger members 11, front to back, as shown in Fig. II, the hanger members being preferably provided with collars l2 sleeved upon the hanger bars. The hanger members 10 are adapted to receive the rollers 13 and are provided with downwardly and forwardly inclined ways 1% therefor. The rollers are thus supported to coact with the rear sides of the adjacent hanger members in front in clamping or clutching the sheets 15, as shown in II. The sides of the hanger members are cut away at 16 to permit the manipulation of the rollers 13, that is, they may be readily engaged by the fingers and liftcdto-release the sheets. i
\Vith the paper hangers thus arranged the sheets of paper are supported from their upper ends. their lower ends hanging perfectly free. The fan 17 is supported below the sheets of paper thus supported, so that air is blown upwardly between the sheets, properly curing or tempering the same.
The fan is supported by the supporting bar 18 which has a carriage 19 at its upper end traveling on the track 20 so that the fan may be moved back and forth horizontally below the sheets. This track is centrally disposed below the paper hanger bars and transversely thereof, it being carried by the rack supporting bars 20 mounted on the side bars 2 between the pairs of hanger bars. This provides a very simple and compact arangement of the parts.
In practice the sheets are arranged in the hangers and the fan adjusted below the sheets to discharge air upwardly between them. Owing to the manner in which the sheets are supported above the fan the sheets readily separate so that the air comes into contact with practically the entire surface of the sheets The fan may be moved from one position to another so that the device is of very large capacity in proportion to space occupied.-
I have shown structures having two sets of hangers but it is apparent that the number may be increased as desired.
In the modification shown in Figs. V to VIII, inclusive, the hanger bars 21 are formed of wood. The hanger members 22 are securedthereto by the screws 23. In other respects the hanger members are substantially the same as those shown in Figs. IIV, inclusive.
The track 2% in the modification shown in Fig. V is carried by a longitudinal bar 26 mounted on the end members 3 of the frame.
The structure operates the same as that shown as the preferred construction.
It will be found that in some cases frames provided with legs are desirable and in other cases those provided with hangers.
My improved tempering or curing machine is, as stated, very simple and compact and economical in structure and at the same time is highly eflicient for the purpose and is of large capacity.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in two embodiments which will, I believe, enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may require, and I have not therefore attempted to illustrate or describe further modifications WlllCll' may be desirable under certain conditions or adaptations.

1.111 a structure of the class described, the combination with a frame comprising side bars, of paper hangers comprising hanger bars mounted on said side bars in spaced pairs, a series of hanger members having collars sleeved upon said hanger bars to support said hanger members thereon front to back, said hanger members being open on their front sides and provided with forwardly and downwardly inclined roller ways, clutch rollers arranged on said ways in said hanger members to coact with the backs of the adjacent hanger members in front for clutching the sheets, the hanger members being open at their sides to permit the manipulation of rollers to release the sheets, a track disposed centrally and transversely below said hanger bars, track supporting bars mounted on said side bars between said pairs of hanger bars, a fan disposed below the paper supported by said hangers, and a fan supporting bar provided ways, clutch rollers arranged on said ways in said hanger members to coact with the backs of the adjacent hanger members in front for clutching the sheets, the hanger members being open at their sides to permit the manipulation of rollers to release the sheets, a track disposed centrally and transversely below said hanger bars, a fan disposed below the paper supported by said hangers, and a fan supporting bar provided with a carriage traveling on said track so that the position of the fan below the paper may be shifted.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a frame, of paper hangers comprising hanger bars mounted transversely of said frame, a series of hanger members having collars sleeved upon said hanger bars to support said hanger members thereon front to back, said hanger members being open on their front sides and provided with forwardly and downwardly inclined roller ways, clutch rollers arranged on said ways in said hanger members to coact with the backs of the adjacent hanger members in front for clutching the sheets, the hanger members being open at their sides to permit the manipulation of rollers to release the sheets, and a fan mounted for horizontal adjustment below the paper supported by said hangers.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a frame, of paper hangers comprising hanger bars mounted transversely of said frame, a series of hanger members having collars sleeved upon said hanger bars to support said hanger member thereon front to back, said hanger members being open on their front sides and provided with forwardly and downwardly inclined roller ways, clutch rollers arranged on said ways in said hanger members to coact with the backs of the adjacent hanger members in front for clutching the sheets, the hanger members being open at their sides to permit the manipulation of rollers to release the sheets, and a fan disposed below the paper supported by said hangers.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a frame comprising side bars, of paper hangers comprising hanger bars mounted on said side bars in spaced pairs, paper holding devices mounted upon said hanger bars, centrally and transversely below said hanger bars, track supporting bars mounted on said side bars between said pairs of hanger bars, a fan disposed below the paper supported by said hangers, and a fan supporting bar proa track disposed vided with a carriage traveling on said track so that the position of the fan below the paper may be shifted.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a frame, of paper hangers comprising hanger bars mounted. on said frame, paper holding devices mounted upon said hanger bars, a track disposed centrally and transversely below said hanger bars, a fan disposed below the paper supported by said hangers, and a fan supporting bar provided with a carriage traveling on said track so that the position of the fan below the paper may be shifted.
