Ohio, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Houses, of which the following 1s a specificat on.

My invention relates to lmprovements in a knock-down house, adapted for use asa chicken coop, chicken brooder, or the like.

An important object of the invention is to provide a house of the above mentioned character, formed of parts which may be readily separated, and arranged in a-compact manner for shipment, and securely held together in such compact manner.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the floor of the house may be readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide ample shade means whereby the chickens are protected from the sun.

Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will be apparent duringthe course of the following description.

11 and a rear side member 12. The forward side-member is preferably in the form of a rectangular frame covered with wire screening 13. This side-member isprovided'with a door opening adapted to be covered by a sliding door 1 1', as shown. The forward side-member 11 has interior vertical legs 15 rigidly secured thereto and projecting above and belowthe same, for a substantial distance, but extending abovethe same -for a much greater distance. The rear side-mem-' ber 12 is preferably imperforate and has interior vertical legs 16 rigidly attached there to, which extend aboveand belowthe same for a substantial distance, as shown. 11 and 12 are provided at their bottoms with interior horizontal floor supporting bars or members 17 "andf'18 respectively, which are rigidly attached thereto, for a purpose to be described. The for ward side-member 11has a vertical grooved guide element 19 attached to the'inn'er side thereof and the rearside-member 12 has a corresponding vertical grooved guide element 20, secured to the interior -thereof.= These guide-elements are adapted to receive a transverse partition 2l, which isadapted tobe inserted between and removed therefrom by an upwardmovement. When arranged within the guide elementsthe partition'21'rests upon and issupportedby the

17 and 18, as shown. The partition 21 has a door opening 22, adapted to be covered'andun'covered by a movable door 23 of'any 'well "known 'or preferred construction. It is apparent'that thepartitio'n 21 divides the body portionof the house into two chambers and'there-are separate floor sections: 24 and 25. These floor sections are arranged upon opposite sides of the partition 21 and-are supported by the

17 and 18 and are adaptedto be moved longitudinally into and out of operative position when the ends of the house are open.

The numeral-26 designates a permanently assembled top portion, comprising 'a forward side portion 27, a rear side'portion 28, tapered end portions 29,- and a top or roof 30 which are rigidlyjsecuredtogether in a permanent manner. The forward side por-- tion 27 is in theform'of an open frame, covered with the section of wire'mesh 31. The top portion 26 is arranged upon the

15 and 16 of these side-members project upwardly into the corners of the top portion 26, thus serving to hold the assembled parts together.

The numeral 32 designates end members as a whole, to the interior of which and at their ends are secured pairs of

locking bars

11 and 27, the bar 33 being arranged upon the exterior thereof while the bar 34 extends interiorly thereof and contacts with the leg 15. The

35 and 36 are arranged upon the opposite sides of the rear side-member 11, in a similar manner. Attached to the outer side of the end member 29 are hinge elements 37 having knuckles for pivotally and detaehably receiving pintles 38 carried by coacting hinge members 39 rigidly attached to the end member 32. When this end member is swung to approximately a vertical position so that the locking bars disengage the forward and rear side members, is is obvious that the pintles 38 may be inserted within or removed from the knuckles of the hinge members 37. The side-members 32 may assume vertical positions for closing the ends of the chambers of the house or more or less horizontal positions, as shown in Fig. 4, thus opening the ends of the chambers. The end-members may be retained in the approximately horizontal position by means of chains 39, detachably secured thereto. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, th end-members 32 carry hooks 40, adapted for detachable engagement with eyes 41, rigidly secured to the forward and

The numeral 42 designates a curtain, formed of canvas or the like, having one end attached to a rod 43, which is pivoted at its ends to the top portion 26, as shown at 44. The lower end of the curtain 42 has connection with a rod 45, carrying hooks 46 at' house.

Mounted to reciprocate within sockets 48 rigidly attached to the end-members 29 are supporting bars 49, carrying eyes 50 at their forward ends, adapted for engagement with the hooks 46 carried by the rod 45. When the bars 49 are moved forwardly as indicated in Fig. 3, and the hooks 46 engage the eyes 50, the curtain will project forwardly in a substantially horizontal position, thus providing a shade curtain.

27 and 28 provided with eyes 51 for engagement with the hooks 40, when the end-members 32 are arranged upon the top member 26, the latter being inverted.

In assembling the different parts of the house, the forward and rear side-

members

11 and 12 are first arranged in a suitably spaced parallel relation and the partition 21 inserted in the grooved guides 19 and 20. The top member 26 is then placed upon these side-members and the

15 and 16 project upwardly into the corners of the top member 26. The

24 and 25 are now moved horizontally through the open ends of the chambers to the operative position. The end-members 32 are brought into proximity to the ends of the assembled side-members 29, and while suitably raised, the pintles 38 are inserted into the knuckles of the hinge members 37 for pivotally connecting the end-members 32 to the end portions 29. 11 and 12. These end-members 32 thus serve as means to retain the separated parts of the apparatus within the top member 26. It is thus apparent that the difi'erent parts of the house may be separated and arranged in a comparatively compact and flat manner for shipment.

In the use of the apparatus, the curtain 42 may be arranged vertically or horizontally, as hereinabove explained. When it is desired to provide additional shade for the chickens, the end-members 32 may be swung upwardly to assume a more or less horizontal position. When the end-members are in this open position the

24 and 25 may be readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the same. It is obvious that the house is in no sense restricted to any particular use, in raising chickens or the like, as such use maybe widely varied as may be found advantageous.

It is to be understood that the form of my inventionherewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size,-and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

1. In a house of the character described; side-members provided near their ends with legs projecting above the same for a substantial distance; a top member comprising side and end portions for arrangement upon the side-members and adapted toreceive the legs; and end-members provided at their ends with pairs of spaced locking bars, to receive the side-members and the side portions of the top member.

2. In a house of the character described; side-members provided near their ends with transverse elements projecting above the same for a substantial distance; a top member comprising side and end portions for arrangement upon the side-members and adapted to receive the transverse elements; and end-members carrying devices adapted to engage with the side-members and the side portions of the top member.

3. A house of the character described, comprising; side-members provided near their ends with transverse elements projecting above the same for a substantial distance; .a top member comprising side and end portions for arrangement upon the side-memers and adapted to receive the upper ends of the transverse elements; and end-members hinged to the end portions of the top member and carrying near their ends pairs of spaced locking bars adapted to receive therebetween the endsof the side-members and the ends of the side portions of the top member.

a. In a house of the character described; side-members provided near their ends with transverse elements projecting above the same for a substantial distance; floor supporting elements arranged upon the inner side of the side-members and secured thereto a floor removably mounted upon the floor supporting elements and adapted to be moved longitudinally through one end of the house; a top member comprising side and end portions for arrangement upon the side-members and adapted to receive the upper ends of the transverse elements; and

end-members having detachable hinged connections with the end portions of the top member and carrying near their ends pairs of spaced locking bars adapted to receive therebetween the ends of the side-members and the ends of the side portions of the top member.

5. In a house of the character described; side-members; a top member comprising side and end portions for arrangement upon the side-members; and end-members connected with the end portions of the top member and carrying pairs of spaced locking bars adapted to receive therebetween the side-members and the side portions of the top member.

6. In a house of the character described; a top member comprising permanently assembled side and end portions; side-members carrying transverse elements extending attheir upper ends upwardly beyond the side members and adapted for insertion within the top member; end-members provided at their ends with pairs of transverse locking bars adapted to receive therebetween the side-members and side portions of the top member when the different parts of the house are assembled and to receive the longitudinal edges of the side portions of the top member when the top member is inverted for receiving other elements of the house and the end-members arranged thereon; and means for detachably and pivotally connecting the end-members with the end portions of the top member.

7 In a house of the character described; side-members provided with approximately horizontal floor supporting bars; a top member having detachable connection with the side-members; a partition removably mounted between the side-members to form a plurality o1": chambers; floor sections movably mounted upon the floor supporting bars and arranged upon opposite sides of the partition; and end-members hinged to the top portion and adapted to be moved to opened and closed positions.
