CORSET.
Application filed December 16, 1915.
' is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a corset` of that type called for when persons having unusually large figures and pendulous abdomens are to be fitted, the corset herein disclosed being l so constructed as to give some looseness about the waist, Vcombined with proper support for the abdomen. It is intended to provide a garment which shall reduce pres sure on the back along the spine, give adlequate provision for the flesh lunder the arms, and lit properly about the busts.
Another object of the invention is to improve generally, a garment of this type, in structural features which will be `made manifest as the description of the invention progresses.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can bel made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan wherein the outside of the garment is shown;
Fig. 2 is a plan wherein the insidel of the garment' appears;
Fig. 3 is a cross section, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is across section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2, parts being omitted;
Fig. 7 Yis a cross section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 1.
The garment forming the subject matter of this application may be made out of any desired material and comprises a pair of back pieces 1 provided with plaits 2 extended the full length of the garment, the plaits being adapted to be slacked away Specification of Letters Patent.

when an increasein the circumferential dimension is required. Intermediate the plaits 2 and the inner longitudinal edges of the back pieces 1,'the back pieces are reinforced by double, covered stays 3 extended the full length of the garment. The'back pieces 1 are reinforced further -by short stays 4 which terminate in spaced relation to the loweredge of the garment. The longitudinal edges of the back pieces 1 are united by an inelastic cord 5, threaded through the said back pieces and extended upwardly, the ends of the inelastic cord 5 being united in a knot 6, adjacent the top of the garment. Threaded downwardly through the longitudinal edges of the back pieces 1 is an elastic cord 7, the lower ends of which may be united by a knot 8. This combination of Velastic and inelastic cords, mounted as above described, serves to shape the garment properly, and togive play where play is needed, itbeing possible to tighten up the garment at the back without crowding the flesh downwardly. The back pieces 1 carry, adjacent their upper ends, and upon the interior of the garment, quilted pads 9 disposed on oppositesides of the spine. The pads 9 serve to lill in the concavity in the back of the wearer and to prevent undue pressure along the spine.
Adjacent their lower ends and upon their remote edges, the back pieces 1 are concaved as shown at 1G, and secured to the concaved edges 10 of the back pieces are hip pieces 11 provided in their lower edges and intermediate their ends with'darts 12. The lower edges of upwardlytapering gores14 are securedto thev upper edges ofthe hip pieces fullness under the arms, the gores 14 being reinforced by stays 15 which extend ilpwardly from the upper edges of the hip pieces 11 to points adjacent the upper edge of the garment. The lower edges of reversely curved shaping strips 16 are secured to the upper edges of the hip pieces 11, the rear edges of the strips 16 being secured to the gores 14. Stays 17 extend upwardly from the u per edges of the hip pieces 11, the stays 1 passing across the seams between the shaping strips 16 and the' gores 14 and lying partially on the gores 14 and the shaping strips 16. Downwardly converging front pieces 18 are provided, the
rear edges of the front pieces 18 being secured throughout their upper portions to the front edges of the shaping strips 1G, the lower portions of the rear edges of the front pieces 18 being secured to the forward edges of the hip pieces 11. The front pieces 18 are reinforced by short stays 19 and long stays 20, and in the front pieces are formed plaits 2l which may be slacked away for adjustment. Secured to the front pieces 18 adjacent the seams between the front pieces and the shaping strips 16 are upright retaining strips 22 with which are assembled the ends of transverse, featherbone ribs 23, secured to the front pieces 18 and extended to points adjacent the forward edges of the front pieces 18. These stays or ribs 23 preferably are fashioned from featherbone and serve to shape the garment properly above the bust and to prevent wrinkling. The front pieces 18 are provided with short stays 19 and with long stays 20. In the front pieces 18 are formed plaits 21 adapted to be slacked away for adjustment.
The invention comprises a strip 25 and a strip 29, the strip 29 being secured to the longitudinal edge of one of the parts 18, the strip 25 being provided with longitudinal braces 24:. A lacing cord 26 or any other suitable means unites the strips 29 and 25. The strip 25 carries hooks 27, adapted to be engaged with eyes 28, on a strip 80 se cured to the longitudinal, forward edge of the other front piece 18. The strips 29 and 30, which are secured, respectively, to the forward edges of the front pieces 18, extend below the lower ends of the front pieces. Bridged across between the lower ends of the strips 29 and 30 upon the one hand and the outer edges of the hip pieces 11 are elastic strips 31 disposed transversely of the garment and adapted to yield under pressure, these strips 31, in combination with the parts 11 serving to draw the garment inwardly about the hips and the abdomen and to shape the garment properly, and to permit the necessary yielding, when the wearer assumes a sitting posture.
Assembled with the lower end of the garment at suitable points, are hose supporters 32 of any desired type. The front portions of the garment, at its upper end, may be connected by draw strings 33.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is z- 1. In a device of the class described, a pair of back pieces the lower forward edges of which are concaved; means for uniting the back pieces; hip pieces the rear edges of which are secured to the concaved edges of the back pieces; reversely curved shaping strips secured at their lower ends to the upper edges of the hip pieces adjacent the outer corners thereof; upwardly converging gores interposed between the shaping strips and the back pieces and having their lower ends secured to the upper edges of the hip pieces; front members secured to the forward edges of the shaping strips; reinforcing strips secured to the forward edges of the front members and extended downwardly below the lower ends of the front members; j and elastic elements disposed transversely of the garment and located bclow the lower ends of the front members, the rear ends of the elastic elements being secured to the forward edges of the hip pieces, and the forwardv edges of the elastic elements being secured to the rear edges of the reinforcing strips; and means for uniting the reinforcing strips detachably.
2. A garment of the class described, comprising a pair of back pieces; pads on the inner surfaces of the back pieces adjacent their inner edges and adjacent their upper ends; an inelastic lacing cord threaded upwardly through the back pieces and having its ends secured adjacent the upper edge of the garment; and an elastic lacing cord threaded downwardly through the lower portions of the back pieces and having its ends secured adjacent the lower edge of the garment.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
