To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MioHAnL Knnczxow- SKI, a subject of the Emperor. of Austria'- Hungary, residing at New- York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-T ables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in extension tables.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a foldable table adapted for' arrangement either as a circular parlor table or a rectangular extension table serviceable for dining or other purposes.

A further object of the device is to pro.- vide a serviceable round table having a solid cylindricalappearancewhen in use and arranged as arranged with a receiving portion for the accommodation of removable extension members and whereby after the table has been altered from its cylindrical appearance, the same may be extended into a rectangular fiat table.

A still further object of the device is to provide a table serviceable at a relatively elevated height. as a round table inclosing extension members and depressible upon the removal of such members for forming a rectangular dining room table. e

With these general objects in view an others that will appear as the nature of the. invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

It will be apparent from the accompanying drawings that the round table formation of the device employs a rectangular table top 20 carried by a cylindrical supporting standard 21 to which is mounted a circular base 22 having casters 23, a bottom 21 for the table being carried by the said standard and arranged parallel to the .top 20. A separate edge member 25 is arranged for each of the four sides 26 of the table top 20, these edge members being arranged in pairs and the members of each pair connected together by hinges 27 while one member of eachpair is hingedly attached as at 28 to the lower outer edge of the table bottom 2&1 which is positioned in vertical alinement with one of the table top edges 26. "When the two members of a pair of edge members are folded together, they are re tained by a catch 27.

The bottom 24 is provided with upright sides 29 and with slightly inset upright ends 30 upon the top edges of which ends and sides, the top 20 is adapted to rest when the device is employed as an extension table, as illustrated in Fig. 17 of the drawings.

The edge members 25 have rectangular flat faces 31- adapted for positioning adjacent the sides 29 and ends 30 when in their table top forming positions and at which times the outer curved faces 32 of the four edge members 25 when taken together form a complete circle, each of the edge portions therefore being in the shape of a seg ment of a circle in cross-section with its face 32 forming an arc of ninety degrees.

A spring-pressed catch 33 is arranged within the top 20 adjacent each edge 26 thereof being adapted for reception within a keeper slot 34 formed in the adjacent portion of the face 31 of one of the edge members 25 when the latter is in its closed position, whereby all of the edge members 25 are retained in edge contact with the top 20 in forming a cylindrical table top having a solid cylindrical appearance, it being understood that the catches 33 may be readily released by means of their operating pins 35 for allowing the edge members 25 to be folded downwardly.

The table top 20 is mounted upon a substantially cubical block 36 shiftably arranged within a vertically positioned tube 37 carried by the table bottom 24, a mounting spring 38 being arranged within the standard 21 and having the said block 36 mounted thereon. Upon depressing the block 36 for lowering the top 20 toward the tube 37, latch hooks 39 carried by the top edges 26 will be engaged with pins 40 upon the sides 29, thus retaining the top 20 in its lowered position, while the hooks 39 may be readily released and the spring 38 will then return the top 20 to its normal elevated position, when the hooks may be engaged with the pins 40 of said sides 29.

It will be noted that when the top 20 is elevated that there is sufficient room within the inclosure formed by the bottom 24, the sides 29 and the ends 30 to accommodate the extension table members consisting of slides 42 which are v adapted to travel slidably through opposite slots 43 in the afore1nen tioned ends 30 while legs 44 are hinged as at 45 beneath the outer free ends of the slides 42 being adapted for folding flatly of the said slides and in-' against the bottoms sertible through the lower portions 46 of the slots 43 for accommodation inwardly of the said ends 30. A cross strip 47 connects the outer ends of the slides 42 together and is positioned in substantial contact with the adjacent end 30 when the slides 42 are inwardly positioned as best illustrated inFig. 5 of the drawing, hand knobs 42' being carried by the strips 47 being received within sockets 10 of the edge member faces 31 when the table is folded.

An extension leaf 48 is carried by the slides 42 adjacent their upper outer ends, a further and similar extension leaf 49 being hinged to each of the leaves 48 as at 50. Resilient bands 51 are centrally secured as at 52 to the bottom 24 and adjacent the inner ends 53 of the slides 42. 7

When the table is assembled as a round table as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 18 of the drawings, the catches 33 are released by means of pins 35 and the edge members 25 lowered to their suspended positions as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The knobs 42 at the opposite ends j of the table are then grasped for outwardly impelling the slides 42 and the legs 44 as well as the leaves 48 and 49. lVhen projected sufficiently, the legs 44 are moved downwardly for engaging the floor or support 54 and the leaves 49 will be unfolded and the slides 42 which have been slightly withdrawn from the slots 43 will be repositioned therein while the elastic members 41 will assist in drawing the inner reduced edges 55 of the leaves 49 into engagement with the complementally formed or matched ends 56 of the top 20 or as best illustrated in Figs. 6 and 17 of the drawing.

A rectangular topped table is thus ar ranged having the edge members 25 suspended out of the way at the opposite sides of the standard 21 and forming opposite ledges or shelves by reason of the horizontally arranged arcuate faces 57 of those edge members 25 which are unhinged to the bottom 24, as best illustrated in Fig. 17 of the drawings. The top which is so formed by means of the leaves 48 and 49 taken with the top member 20 is of less height then the normal position of the top 20 when arranged in its circular formation by means of the edge members 25 as hereinbefore specifically described, the difference in elevation being apparent from Figs. 17 and 18 of the drawings.

The present table is readily serviceable as a card table when normally positioned as a round table and at which time it completely incloses the extension members although such members may be readily withdrawn and positioned for presenting an enlarged table surface of rectangular form and serviceable as a dining table.

A rectangular table top of less dimensions 7 than the full extension table illustrated in Fig; 17 of the drawings may be arranged when desired by dispensing with the use of the leaves 48 and employing only the table 7 gaged with intermediately arranged pins 40 upon the sides 29, it being noted that recesses 11 are arranged in the adjacent edge member faces 31 for accommodating the hooks 39 as well as the pins 40, 40, 40", when the edge members 25 are operatively arranged as illustrated in Fig. 18.

Again referring to the intermediate size of table top as shown in Fig. 16, it will be seen that the leaves 49 are turned from their hinges 50 for fiat positioning upon the end leaves 48, the slides 42 being then moved inwardly for engaging the stepped hinged edges 49 of the leaves 49 in engagement with the adjacent cut-away edges 20' of the table top 20. It will be seen that a rigid table structure is thus arranged having a top of less area than the full extension table, the edge members 25 being positioned out of the way beneath the table while the spring 38 is restrained by the hooks 39 and the composite table top is made rigid by the interengaging edges of the top 20 and leaves 49.

A serviceable table is thus arranged giving a finished appearance as a circular parlor table when desired and completely fulfilling the requirements of an extension table for dining and other purposes, having a stable rectangular top that may be varied in area. The end strips 47 with their hand knobs 42 give a finished appearance to the ends of the table when arranged in either form of extension table while the legs 44 are arranged in their folded positions when the device is employed as a partial extension table as shown in Fig. 16, folding braces 44 being provided for the said legs when the latter are in use with the full extension table as shown in Fig. 17 of the drawings.

While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

What I claim as new is 1. A combination table comprising a standard, extension members for said table, an inclosing means for said extension mem bers carried by the standard, a rectangular top carried above the said standard and pairs of curved edge members hinged to the said inclosing means and adapted for engaging the edges of the said top inclosing the said top and means, the said edge members having outer curved faces whereby the ap pearance of a solid cylindrical table top is presented when the device is operatively arranged.

2. An extensible table comprising a standard, a rectangular table top and bottom carried by the said standard, segmental edge members arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being hinged together at the ends thereof and one member of each pair being hinged at one of its longitudinal edges to lower opposite corners of the said bottom, the said edge members being adapted for circularly inclosing the said top and bottom when the device is in its normally closed arrangement with the upper faces in the same plane as the table top.

3. An extensible table comprising a standard, a rectangular table top and bottom carried by the said standard, segmental edge members arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being hinged together at the ends thereof and one member of each pair being hinged at one .of its longitudinal edges to lower opposite corners of the said bottom, the said edge members being adapted for circularly inclosing the said top and bottom when the device is in its normally closed arrangement with the upper faces in the same plane as the table top, releasable retaining catches upon each edge of the said top, each of the said edge members having a receiving keeper for one of the said latches at a point adjacent thereto" when the device is assembled as a round table.

4. An extensible table comprising astand-v ard, a rectangular table top and bottom carried by the said standard, segmental edge members arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being hinged together at the ends thereof and one member of each pair being hinged at one of its longitudinal edges to lower opposite corners of the said bottom, the said edge members being adapted for circularly inclosing the said top and bottom when the device is in its normally closed arrangement with the upper faces in the same plane as the table top, releasable retaining catches upon each edge of the said top, each of the said edge members having a receiving keeper for one of the said latches at a point adjacent thereto when the device is assembled as a round table, sides and ends carried by the said bottom, depressible mounting means for the said top whereby the top rests upon the said sides and ends when depressed, slides shiftably arranged through the said ends, legs hinged to the outer ends of the said slides, and foldable table leaves carried by the said slides and adapted for engaging the opposite edges of the said top when operatively arranged in horizontal alinement therewith. V

5. A combination table comprising a standard, top, bottom, sides and ends carried by the said standard forming an inclosure, extension table members oppositely arranged foldably positioned within the said inclosure, and pairs of segmental edge members foldable together hingedly carried by the said bottom and normally encirclingly its elevated position, foldable extension surrounding the said inclosure with the upper faces in the same plane as the table top.

6. A device of the class described comprising a standard, a normally elevated depressible table top carried by the said standard, arcuate edge members adapted for employment With the said top When the latter is in said top when the latter is depressed and a releasable latch for retaining the said top depressed.
