Description

Patented Dec. 5,1871...
HAWEJV L PUJZDM l 06m/Va WASHER.
. f i V y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HADWEN L. PURDIE, DEOEASED, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, (JOHN PURDIE, ADMINISTRATOR.)
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,546, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HADWEN L. PURDIE, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking-Washers; and I do hereby declare thatV the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of' a novel arrangement of slots and dog in combination with a spring for locking the dog. Y
In the accompanying drawing, Figures l and 2 are views of the face side of two different modiiications of my improved lockingwasher. Figs. 3 and 4 are views ofthe hollow side of the same two modifications.
'lhe main plate of my washer is shown at A, with a hub, B, raised on both sides, but only slightly raised on the face side simply to relieve the corners of the nut from binding too hard upon the face of the washer. In a slot, G, is
placed the sliding dog D, which being moved backward, as seen in Fig. 1allows the nut to turn, and being moved forward toward the nut, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, locks the nut, and thus prevents its being turned. The dog itself is also locked by some suitable means to prevent it from moving away from the nut. In Fig. l I employ a notch, E, for locking the dog, which is pushed into this notch by means ofthe coiled spring F, Fig. 3; and in Fig. 2 I have used a screw, Gr, for the same purpose; but any other suitable means may be adopted at pleasure. Instead ofthe hollow washer a recess only may be made in the washer; but this would make the washer too heavy and expensive.
Having described my invention, I claim- The slotO, provided with notches, as described, in combination with the spring F for locking the dog D, substantially as set forth.
Witnesses: HADVVEN L. PURDIE.
DANIEL BREED, JOHN PURDIE.
