Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
Application filed January 30, 1915. Serial No. 5,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. LANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cutting Mechanism for Display- Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful cutting mechanism for display racks.
As an object of the invention it is the aim to provide a cutting mechanism of such a nature that a vertical movement may be imparted to the cutting knife, so as to cut the oil cloth or other fabric vertically, said cutting knife being so arranged that when it is desired to cut a section of the height of the oil cloth, the knife may be turned and disposed transversely, and by swinging the frame of the cutting mechanism around the display rack, the knife will cut the oil cloth or similar material transversely.
One of the features ofthe invention is the provision of a suitable swingin frame having guides for the cutting mec anism.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the improved cutting mechanismas applied to a display rack, of the type, set forth, illustrated and claimed in the patent dated March 12, 1912, Patent No. 1,019,807.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the cutting mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a bar 6 showing the knife.
The present cutting mechanism is an importion of the provement on the cutting mechanism, set
forth illustrated and claimed in the patent, dated Jan. 13, 1-914, Patent No. 1,084,350, and comprises upper and lower bracket arms 1 and 2 which are swiveled to the vertical standard 3 of the rotary display rack 4. The bracket arms 1 and 2 are connected by the vertical bars 5 and 6, which are rectangular'in cross section. The up er and lower ends of the bars 5 and 6 are ent at right angles, forming the ears 7, which are bolted or otherwise secured at 8 to the bracket arms 1 and 2. The bar 6 is provided with a vertical elongated slot 9. A carriage member or block 10 is mounted upon the rod 5 and guided thereby for vertical movement thereon, the same being provided with a lug 11 for engagement with the nose 12 of the spring catch 13, so as to hold the carriage block in a raised position, when not in use. A cylindrical member 14 having a knife blade or cutter 15 is mounted in an opening 16 of the carriage block, there being a set screw 17 for holdin the cylindrical handle 14, so that the knife or cutting blade may either cut the oil cloth verticallyor horizontally, as the cutting mechanism is moved vertically on the bars 5 and 6, or when the cutting mechanism frame is swung horizontally on the vertical standard of the display rack. At the same time that the cutting mechanism frame is swung horizontally, the oil cloth may be pulled horizontally in the opposite direction. The knife or cutting blade is provided with a reduced cylindrical extension 18 which engages the slot 9 of the rod 6, when the cutting blade orknife is severing the oil cloth vertically. However,
when the cutting blade or knife is disposed to sever the oil cloth vertically, the blade of the knife may partially extend into the slot, in which case the slot will act as a guide for the blade, to hold the same true to its work, while the rod 5 will guide the carriage block.
The walls of the slots are provided with a plurality of cuts or recesses 19, into any opposite two of which the knife blade may partially extend, to prevent wabbling-of the cutting knife or blade, when severing the oil cloth horizontally.
The upper bracket arm is provided with a hook to which a tape or the like (not shown) may be connected, for measuring the desired piece of oil cloth, measuring the length of thesame, or the height of the vertical out, said hook being designated by the numeral 21.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1; In combination, a U-shaped verticalv supporting frame adapted to be secured swivelly on a standard of a display rack, said frame having a pair of vertical guide bars, which are rectangular in cross section and one being provided with a guide-slot, a carriage block vertically movable on one of the bars, and a cutting device adjustably mounted in said carriage block and engageable in the slot in the other bar. v
2. In combination with a vertical standard of a display rack, a U-shaped frame swiv 'eledtl'on said' standard having a air of 1 3. In combination with a vertical standaid of a'vf display rack, a U-shaped frame.
swiveled on saidstandard havin a pair-of spaced vertical bars, one of w ich being provided with a vertical guide slot, a carriageYvertically movable on the other bar,
' and a cutting device adjustably mounted in the carriage block, and extending into the guide slot, and means for holding the carriage block in a raised position on the U- shaped frame.
In combination with a vertical standfairie ard of a display rack, a U-shaped frame swiveled on said standard having a pair of spaced vertical bars, one of which being provided with a vertical guide slot, a carriage vertically movable on the other bar,
and a cutting device adjustably mounted in the carriage block, and extending into the guide slot, said carriage block designed to be moved vertically downwardlyto sever the oil cloth vertically, said frame adapted to be swung upon the standard so that the knife willsever the oil cloth horizontally, the walls of the guide slot having a plurality of cuts to receive the cuttin blade when cuttingsubstantially horizonta ly. In testimony whereof I have-signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
