PATENT FFT,
CLARENCE ROSENFIELD, VIRGIL L. HELM, AND EMMETT KEY, OF FORT EVORTH, TEXAS, ASSIGNORS T0 THE SAFETY KEY TAG COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
HOTEL-KEY TAG.
Application le. September 5, 1916.
:To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CLARENCE ROSEN- EIELD, VIEGIL L. HELM, and EMMETT KEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort l/Vol'th, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hotel-Key Tags, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has relation to a key tag and in such connection it relates more particularly to a metallic frame adapted to carry advertising matter and to be locked as a tag to a hotel key to prevent accidental or intentional carrying off of the key by the guest.
Heretofore key tags for hotel use have been provided in which the key was suspended to a relatively large and heavy metal tag by means of a chain or link and the key was sometimes united directly to the metal tag by riveting or pinching the open end of the tag about the shank of the key. Such types of key tags were expensive, being made of metal, and in case of emergency the key could not readily be removed from the tag.
Attempts have been made to provide a frame carrying advertising matter and adapt it for use as a tag for the key but in all such instances so far as we are aware the structures so formed have been expensive and while fairly eifective as advertising mediums could not safeguard against the accidental or intentional carrying olf of the key by the guest.
It is the main object of our invention te provide a key tag of simple and inexpensive construction and consisting of two members of a frame readily interlocking together to confine the advertising matter in the frame and to lock the key to the frame in such position as to prevent the key and tag from being accidentally or intentionally -pocketedl In the carrying out of our invention there is thus provided a tag consisting of two frame members carrying the advertising matter said members interlocking with each other and confining the key to a position at right angles to the faces of the tag.
The nature and scope of our invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- 0 Figure l, 1s a perspective view partly Specification of Letters Patent.

broken away of a key tag embodying the main features of our invention.
Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3, is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. a, is a perspective view of the top of the tag with key inserted to unlock the frame members from each other.
Fig. 5, is a front elevational view partly sectioned of ay modified form of tag.
Fig. (5, is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 6*@ of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7, is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings l and 2 represent the two interlocking frames which constitute the key tag and also the carrying means for the advertising card or cards 3.
The frame l which may be regarded as the outside or covering member of the tag is formed of relatively thin sheet metal having openings l0 for the display of the advertising on one face of card 3. The upper edge 11 of frame l is turned back to form a recess for the reception of the upper edge of frame 2. The upper portion l2 of frame l is transversely slotted as at 13 to receive the stern or shank of the key 4:. The side edges 14 of frame l are bent or curled backward each to form a channel or guide way for the side edges 2i of the inner frame 2.
The frame 2 has its upper edge 2l turned inward to form a spring locking lip 22 and this upper edge 2l is indented or recessed as at to receive the shank of the key 4.. The side edges 2l of the inner frame 2 are bent or curled to dovetail in the side edges ifi of frame l and the lower edge 25 of frame 2 is bent inward to inclose the lower edge of the outer frame l.
Cooperating with the locking lip 22 of the frame 2 in the form of locking device shown in Figs. l to 4 are two inwardly projecting locking lips l5 formed on the upper portion l2 of the outer frame l. When frame 2 is to be slid in frame l, the shank Lt1 of key -l is inserted in the recess or slot 1S and the frame 2 slid upward until its recess or indentation 23 receives said shank Lil and when the lip 22 passes the locking lips 15 the frame 2 is locked to the frame l and the key is locked to both frames, eX- tending therefrom at right angles to the frames. To release frame 2 from frame 1,
a flat metal key 5 (see Fig. Ll) is inserted between the upper portion 12 of frame 1 and locking lip 22 of frame 2 to force said locking lip 22 out of engagement with lips 15 of frame 1.
ln Figs. 5, 6 and 7 a variation -or modification of the locking device is illustrated. In this form the upper portion 22 of frame 2 is coiled around a resilient Wire 16 having its ends bent downwardly and outwardly to engage recesses 2G cut in the side edges of frame 2. A wire key 51 having prongs may be inserted through perforations 17 in the top edge of frame 1 to engage the ends of wire 1G to disengage the same from said recesses 26.
Since the key projects crosswise of the tag frame and not as heretofore parallel to the tag, it is almost impossible to place the key in the pocket and hence intentional or accidental taking away of the key by the guest is rendered impractical.
Having thus described the nature and objects of our invention what we claim as new f and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described,
2. In a hotel key tag, Vtwo interlocking frames traversed at one end by the key, saidY key locked by said frames to project at right angles to the faces of the frame and an advertising card inclosed between the frames and supported therein to exhibit its faces through said frames.
ln testimony whereof we names to this specification.
