IMPROVEMENT lN CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,484, dated December 5, 1871.

To all whom it may conce-rn:

Tippecanoe City, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Shovel-Plows, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of shovelplows which consists of a beam carrying at the rear end a single shovel, and to which a second shovel is attached in such a manner that it may be adj usted to di verge more or less from the shovel on the main beam. The improvement consists in novel means for connecting the adjustable shovel to the main be'am of the plow.

Figure 1 represents the improved shovel-plow in perspective. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the saine.

A refers to the main beam of the plow, which carries at its rear end the standard B, to the lower end of which the shovel C is secured in 'any approved manner. The connection between the beam and standard is strengthened by the tie-rod D in the usual way, and the beam is also provided with a clevis, E, at its forward end. F refers to a secondary iron beam, pivoted upon a bolt, j", to the main beam A, and curved downward near its rear end to form the standard for the shovel F', the length of this beam being such that its shovel sha-ll stand some distance in advance ofthe shovel O. The rear end of the beam F is connected with the main beam A by means of a link, H, which is pivoted at j" to the former, and secured to a laterally-projecting plate or bracket, G, on the side of the latter. This plate is of considerable ength, and is provided with a number of holes,

g, for the reception of the shank h of the link H. By shifting this shank of the link from one hole in the plate Gr to another the divergence of the shovels can be readily regulated to meet dii'erent exigencies. The shank may be secured by a nut, as shown, or in any other preferred manner; and it is apparent that instead of the series of holes an elongated slot in the plate G may be substituted. Vhen not needed the adjustable shovel can easily be ,letached. The standard B is prolon gated above the beam A, and to this part of it are secured the braces I I, which support the rear end of the handles K K, which are pivoted to the bea-m on a bolt, k. The'braees are bent into the forni best seen in Fig. l, and secured at each end to the standard B by suitable bolts. The part I of each has a number of holes, one above the other, at t' i, to permitof the adjustment of the handles to suit different-sized persons, the handles being also perforated at different points, as seen.

lhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with a single shovel-plow, A B O, the secondary beam and shovel F F', when pivoted to the main beam at j' and adjustably connected therewith at the rear end by means of the link H and pertbrated or slotted plateior bracket Gr, substantially in the manner set forth.
