GHURN'.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan, 30, 191'?.
Application filed August 12, 1915. Serial No. 45,133.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY B. BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Biloxi, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented an Improvement in Churns, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention is an improvement in churns and has particular reference to a rotary churn in which the receptacle is adapted to be detachably mounted.
An object of the invention is the provision of a rotary carrier including a pivoted receptacle receiving member adjustably mounted so that receptacles of dierent sizes may be accommodated within the said carrier.
Another object is to provide a churn of this character which is simple in construction and, therefore easy to manufacture, and which is durable and efficient in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle carrier constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary botf tom plan view showing the manner of connecting the receptacle retaining member to the carrier. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through Fig. 2 also showing the means for adjusting the retaining member.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 indicates generally the supporting frame which is made entirely of twisted wire or steel rods and comprises the parallel base members 6 and upwardly converging end members 7 which are connected by cross braces 8 adjacent the bottom thereof. The upper ends of the end members 7 are coiled or twisted to provide journals 9 for supporting the receptacle carrier to be presently described. This carrier is also preferably made of twisted wire or steel rods and includes a substantially circular base 10 having cross braces -11 arranged parallel to each other. These cross braces are extended upwardly in a diagonal direction and form the side members 12 which are connected at their upper ends by means of the substantially rectangular top 13. The central side member 12 at one end of the carrier is extended horizontally to provide the shaft 11 which engages one of the journals 9 ofthe supporting frame, while the central side member l2 at the other end of the carrier is extended to provide an operating handle l5 which is mounted in the other journal 9 of said frame whereby the carrier may be rotated in the frame. In order to maintain the carrier in the position illustrated in Fig. l when the same is not being rotated a latch 16 is provided which is pivoted to one of the cross braces 8 and has its free end bent to provide a hook 17 adapted to engage an opening formed between the twisted wires of the adjacent side member l2 of the carrier.
Extending upwardly from the top 13 of the carrier at one end thereof is a pair of rods 18 secured to the carrier by means of the nuts 19. A cross bar 20 is adjustably mounted on the upper ends of the rods 18, the latter having coiled thereabout the springs 21 which support said bar in position. The upper extremities of the rods 18 have mounted thereon the wing nuts 22 which bear against the upper edge of the bar 20 and are adapted to force the same downwardly against the tension of the springs 2l when said bar is lowered for a purpose which will appear in the course of this description. If it is desired to raise the bar 20 the wings 22 need only be unscrewed, whereupon the springs 2l will force said bar upwardly. A rod 23 similar to the rods 18 is mounted in the other end of the carrier centrally thereof and also has a spring 24: coiled thereabout to support an adjustable bar 25. A wing nut 26 is also threaded upon the rod 23 and used to adjust said bar 25, the latter being also supported by means of vertical extensions 27 projecting from the top of the carrier and engaging the outer face of the bar 25.
A receptacle retaining device generally indicated by 28 is pivoted to the-bar 20 and includes a plate 29 having lateral extensions 30 at each end in which is mounted a small pivot rod 31. The retaining device 28 is also preferably made of twisted wire or rods and is mounted in the element 32 which has secured to the bottom thereof a plate 33 having pivoted ears 34 which are mounted upon the rod 31, thus hingedly connecting the retaining member to the bar 20. A coil spring 35 is mounted upon the rod 31 and has one free end engaging the bottom of the element 32 while the other end engages the lilo plate 29 so as to force the retaining device or member 28 upwardly to an open position when the same is released by a lock f362pivotally mounted in the bar 25 and having a vhandle 37, said lock engaging the retaining various. receptacles.
NVhat yis claimed f is A' churn: comprising a supporting .fra-me, a receptacle carrier rotatably :mounted 11i v.said frame, 4vertically arranged rods :eX- tending upwardly, fromV said` carrier/atA each .end thereof,y transversely disposed vand` vertically adjustable bars r' mounted on'v said rods, tightening means carried lby said frods :for
