Application le' August 26, 1913, Serial No. 786,753. Renewed November 15, 1916.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, ARTHUR L. PASGHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at ASan Simon, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental-Floss Holders, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe invention relates generally to tooth cleaning devices, and particularly to a holder1 adapted to contain a spool ot dental ioss, the holder being constructed to permit the positioning of the proper length of such iioss on the holder to permit necessary tooth cleaning operation.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a dental floss holder in l which the oss, wound upon a spool is normally housed within a protecting casing forming part of the holder, the holder further including a. mea-ns for guiding the terminal strand from the spool and for securing a portion thereof in comparatively taut condition and in a position for convenient application and use for tooth cleaning purposes. p
rlhe invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following speciication, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure l is a broken plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. F ig. 3 is a broken elevation ot one of the arms.
ln Figs. l, 2, and 3 l have shown a form of structure wherein 27 represents a hollow shank formed at one end to provide divergent arms 28 and 29 supporting the operative length of the thread. rl`he shank is hollow throughout the length and gradually convergent from the end remote from the arms 28 and 29 toward said arms, whereby when the thread is draw-n from the spool as hereinafter described said thread is prevented rom meeting an angular edge. ln this instance the arm 29 is hollow throughout its length to permit a complete un- Specication of Letters Patent.

broken housing for the full length of the thread except that portion actually in use. The arm 29 is provided with a guide 30, while the arm 28 is terminally provided with a guide 31. The end ot the shank remote from the arms is extended in the form.V of spaced semi-circular plates 32 forming` in 55 effect one haltl of the housing, the'remaining housing section 33 being similarly formed and being hinged to the section 32 at one end, a catch 34e securing the parts in connected relation. The longitudinal cen, 60 ters of the free edges of the housing section 32 are formed with oiiset projections 35 Jforming recesses for the reception of the terminals of the spool spindle 36, the spool 37 being preferably integral with the spin- 65 dle and adapted to support the desired quantity of thread wound thereon. The section 33 of the casing is formed at appropriate points with offsets 38 to overlie and reintorce the od'sets 35 when the sections are 70 in casing forming relation.
In the form described, it will be obvious that means are provided tor conveniently adjusting a new length of the thread in the holder for use, the remaining portions of the thread being, at least in certain of the forms, fully housed and protected against outside influence. ln every instance, the spool may be readily replaced when eX- hausted.
yThe holder is complete, providing a' sirnple article which aside from the details of construction described, may be ornamental to any desired extent and may be constructed of any appropriate material.
What is claimed is ln a device of the class described, in combination a hollow shank, divergent arms formed integrally upon said shank, one of said arms being formed hollow so as to com- 90 municate with said hollow shank, thread guides carried by said arms at their outer ends, said shank being provided with spaced semicircular plates forming onehalf ot a housing, a semicircular housing 95 section hingedly connected to said plates, a
catch adapted to secure the said sections ofV sets adapted to `overlie and reinforce said the housing together, said first-named housfirst named osets. 10 ing section being formed with off set projec- In testimony whereof I aiiixl my signature tions forming pintle bearings2 a spool hav- 1'n presence of two wltnesses.
