Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD VELKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Holstein, in the county of Calumet, State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in gates of that class which are adapted to be opened and closed by a driver or rider without necessitating alighting.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a swinging gate for roads or drive-ways which is equipped with certain mechanism through the medium of which the gate, if closed and latched, may be unlatched and opened, and after being opened may again be closed and latched without requiring the rider or driver to alight to the ground and walk tothe gate for the purpose of'manually and directly unlatching and opening, or closing the same.
It is also my purpose to provide gate operating mechanism which may be applied to any well known form of swinging gate, which may be easily and conveniently operated, and which will embody the desired features of simplicity, efliciency, and cheapness of manufacture and upkeep.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a gate embodying my invention and showing the same in its closed position. Fig. 2 is atop plan view showing the operating mechan -;rn at and adjacent to the post to which the gate is hinged. 3 is a cross sectiona! view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a top plan View of the keeper and latch therefor.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A designates the hinge post, usually located at one side of the road and B indicates the latch post at the opposite side of the road. A well known and conventional form of gate is shown at C and is swingingly connected with the post A through the medium of a lower hinge D and an upper hinge E. Secured to and projecting above the top of the post A is a stationary shaft 1 carrying a relatively large horizontally disposed gear wheel 2. Fastened as at 3 to this gear wheel is a horizontally extending arm :l-. Arranged alongside the road and at opposite sides of the hinge post A are arranged the posts- 5 and G, the former having pivoted on the top thereof the horizontally disposed lever 7, while the post 6 has pivoted to the top thereof a similar lever 8, these levers forming operating arms or handles. Fastened to one end of the lever 7, as at 10, is one end of a wire or cable 11, this cable running diagonally with its opposite end fastened as at 12 to the opposite end of the lever S, the cable or wire 11 passing loosely through the eye 13 on the arm 1. Likewise a similar wire or cable 14 is fastened 011 the other end of the lever 7 as at 15, this cable or wire lt extending diagonally, and crossing the cable or wire 11, is fastened intermediate its length as at 16 to the arm 4: adjacent the outer end of the latter, the other end of the cable or wire It being fastened as at 17 to the other end of the horizontal lever 8. The gear wheel 2 loosely mounted upon the upper end of the shaft 1 and meshes with the pivoted pinion 18, loosely mounted upon the extension 19 of the pintle of the hinge E.
A pair of L-shaped bolts or irons 21 have their vertical portions extending through and secured as shown at 22, to the pinion 18 at opposite sides of the extension 19 of the pintle, which forms the pivot for the pinion. To the terminals of the horizontal sections of these L-shaped arms are connected as at 233 the adjacent ends of the chain sections 24 of the chain 20, which runs longitudinally of the gate C adjacent the top bar thereof, and has sections at the opposite end connected to the sliding bolt 26 which projects beyond the free end of the gate, and is connected as at 27 to the relatively long vertically disposed latch spring 28 which is fastened at its lower end as at 29 to the free end of the gate. Fastened to the latch post B by means of a clamp 30, is a horizontally disposed keeper plate 31, having a keeper slot or notch 32 formed therein and into this notch the latch 28 is adapted to swing to latch the gate when the latter is closed.
From the abovedescription, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, the Construction and operation of my invention will be readily apparent to those familiar with this class of gates.
When the driver or rider reaches one of the posts, for instance, thepost 5, he grasps the handle portion 7 of the lever 7 and pushes the latter forward or toward the gate, thus pulling rearward or away from the gate along the cable or wire 11, this causing the gear wheel 2 to turn and consequently the pinion 18 is also turned. As the pinion 18 turns one of the levers 21 swings away from the gate and exerts a pull on one of the chains 24:, thus pulling the bolt 26 inward of the gate and thereby drawing the latch spring 28 out of the slot 32 in the keeper plate 31. The continued pushing on the lever 7 will cause the other lever :21 to swing into contact with the gate to swing the gateopen, and after the rider or driver has passed. therethrough and reaches the post 6, he may actuate thelever 8 by grasping the handle 8' thereof and reverse the operation to close the gate. As the gate reaches its closed position, and the driver ceases to push the lever, the resiliency of the spring latch 28 will cause it to swing outward and again engage with the notch in the keeper plate to latch the latter.
\Vhile I have herein shown and described my inventionas applied to one form of gate, I wish it to be understood that it is not post, a gear rotatable on the top of the hinge post, a pinion rotatable on the hinge axis of Y the gate and meshing with the gear, a latch mechanism for the gate, a keeper on the latching post engaged by said latch mechanism, a pair of levers rigidly secured to said pinion and projecting forwardly on. the.
opposite sides of the gate in spaced relation thereto, flexible connections between said levers and latching mechanism, a lever extending rearwardly from said gear, and distant means. on opposite sides of the gate for actuating said lever to rotate said gear, and pinion, whereby one of said pairs of levers first withdraws the latching mechanism and the other subsequently bears against the gate to open it. 7
