This invention relates to a closure opening device which is eflicient and simple in construction and which may be readily applied to a door or gate and operated at a predetern'iined point from the closure.
A further object of the inventionis the provision of a device for operatingthe closure and also unlocking or looking the closure against movement and in which a latching bar is pivotally mounted on the closure and operated through a link and actuating rod disposed longitudinally along a drivewa with cranks for rocking the actuating roc to not only unlock the latching bar but for causing the closure to swing to closed or open position.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved device shown applied to a garage oor.
Figure 2 is a front view in elevation of a garage showing my improved operating and locking device applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of a gate showing my device applied thereto with actuating means located upon opposite sides of the gate.
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of the gate with the actuating and locking device applied in operative relation to the gate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1O designates the front wall of a garage having a hinged door 11 on which is mounted a guide 12 having a slot 13 to receive the free end of a latch bar 14. A keeper 15 secured to the front wall of the garage is adapted to receive the free end of the latch bar when guided by the slot 13. The bracket 16 is rigid with the door upon which is pivotally mounted at 17 the latch bar 14. The rear end of the latch bar has a perforated lug 18 adapted to receive one end of a link 19. The other end of the link is engaged by the perforated end 20 of a crank 21. This crank is formed integrally with an actuating rod 22 mounted in bearings 23 carried bya plurality of posts 24 located at one side of the driveway 25 which leads to the garage door 11. The outer free end of the'rod 22 is provided with an operating crank 26. The outer free end of the latch bar 14 has sufficient weight to aid in causing the bar to slide into the keeper 15 when the crank 26 is operated.
The operation of my device is as follows:
When the crank 26 is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 1 the crank 21 is moved outwardly pulling on the link 19 and forcing the rearend 2'? of the latch bar 14 downwardly, thus elevating the forward end and moving the same out of engagement with the keeper 15. The continued rotation of rod 22 and movement or" crank 26 will cause the link 19 to pull on the rear end 2'? of the latch bar 14 and cause the door 11 to swing outwardly on its hinges until the free end of the latch bar 14 will fall into a keeper 28 located upon the central post 24 at one side of the driveway. A movement of the crank 26 which is reverse to that indicated by the arrow in Figure 1 will cause the latch bar 14 to be elevated out of the keeper 28 and force the door to swing inwardly until the latch bar 14 again rides over the keeper 15 and is seated within the usual notch for the purpose so that the door is again locked in position.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, a plurality of posts 30 and 31 are disclosed along a roadway 32. A post 33 is located at the opposite side of the roadway and alined with post 31. Each of the posts 30 and 31 are provided with a bearing 34 in which is rotatably mounted a rock shaft 35 having cranks 36 and 37 at its opposite ends.
A gate 38 is hinged at 39 to the post 31 and is provided with a latch 40 pivotally mounted at 41 on a bracket 42 carried by the said gate. This latch member has a free end 43 adapted to engage the keeper 44 on the post 33, the end of said latch being guided in its movements by a slot 45 in a bracket 46 carried by the free end of the swinging gate 38. The opposite end 47 of the latch 40 has a perforated lug 48 adapted to receive one end of a link 49, the other end of the link being connected to a rock lever 50 which is rigid with a rock shaft 35.
The operation of the mechanism shown in Figures 3 and 4 is similar in all respects to the mechanism shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the construction shown in the modified from has the additional feature of an extension of the rock shaft 35, at opposite sides of the gate, with cranks 36 and 37 carried by the opposite ends of the shaft so that the gate may be unlatched or opened at either side of the gate.
By rocking the cranks 36 or 37 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figures 3 and l, the lever 50 is rocked in an opposite direction from either of the cranks whereby the link 49 pulls upon the rear end at? of the latch 40 causing the free end of the latch to be elevated until it engages the bracket at the top of the slot 45 since at this time the latch member is held against further movement the gate will then be swung to one side and opened.
Rocking the cranks 36 and 37 in a direction which is opposite to the direction indicated by the arrows will cause a reverse movement of the gate. A keeper 51 connected to a post 30 is adapted to be engaged by the free end 4:3 of the latch tO when the gate has been moved to its extreme open position and thereby automatically lock the gate from further movement.
The device just described provides for simplicity of construction, installation and operation, for durability, positive action,
commercial practicability and for adaptability to all types of gates or doors whether formed of Wood, iron or wire.
What I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a closure, a fixed support, said closure having hinged connections with the fixed support, a bracket secured to the closure and having an arm spaced from said closure, a latch bar pivoted on the spaced arm and having its other free end extending towards the free end of the closure, a guide to receive the free end of the latch bar, a keeper on the support adapted to be engaged by the free end of the latch bar for locking the closure in closed position, the other end of the latch bar being provided with a perforated lug projecting laterally from the latchbar, a rock shaft extending at right angles to the normal position 0 the closure and provided with a depending rock arm, a link connecting the free end of the rock arm with the perforated lug on the latch bar, means for operating the rock shaft, and a keeper adapted to engage the free end of the latch bar when the closure has been moved to open position, said latch bar being adapted to be actuated by the initial rocking of the rock shaft.
