To all 'whom may concern.'
Be it known that l, PETER A. RAsMUs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Paxton, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door latches and more particularly to locks for automobile doors.
rlhe object of the invention is to produce an automobile door-latch ot simple construction which will withstand the constant and rough handling which locks of this type receive.
rlthe invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein lsimilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of the interior of a door; showing my lock ap- Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion of the front of the door removed to expose the lock; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a portion of the door of an automobile having front and rear spaced panels or walls 2 and yrespectively. A metal plate 4 the inwardly bent ends -5 and G of which are suitably secured within the hollow door, as by screws or the like 7, carries the sliding bolt and bolt operating mechanism about to be described.
Numeral 8 represents the sliding bolt the reduced end 9 of which extends through an apertured lug 10 cut from the plate 4, a coil spring 1l bearing at one end against the lug 10 and at its other end against the washer 12 serving to normally maintain the bolt in retracted or locked position. The hooked end 13 of this bolt engages behind a keeper 14 carried by the door \frame 15l1 when the lock is in the position just described, thus preventing the door from being swung outwardly on its hinges, (not shown). Means for manually moving the bolt out of engagement with the keeper 14 is provided, comprising a toggle-lever 15 pivoted at one end to a stationary pin 16- secured between lugs 16a struck up from one end 6 of plate 4 and at the other end to bolt 8. A pendant link 17 hung from the togglelevers is connected at its lower end to the cross bar 18 of a U-shaped hand lever 19. rlhe legs 2O of this lever extend through slots 21 formed in the wall 2 of the door and are pivoted at their extremities to the bent ends 5 and 6 of plate 4, as at 21a. By pressing down upon the lever 19 a corresponding downward movement is communicated to the toggle-levers, causing the bolt to move to the right, in Fig. 2, and the hooked end thereof away from the keeper 14 and against the tension of spring 11. Upon release of the lever the coil spring eects a reversal of this operation as will be readily understood. For the purpose of preventing the bolt 8 from wabbling or binding astationary guide or lug 22 is provided by cutting away the plate 4 as at 23, said guide contacting with the upper face of the bolt. Secured to the lower tace of the bolt by screw 24 is an angle guide plate 25 adapted to bear against the lower face of plate 4 when the bolt is reciprocated, thus serving a similar purpose to the movable guide plate.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely dilierent embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim is:
ln a door lock in combination, a hollow door having spaced front and rear walls, said rear wall being slotted, a plate adapted to be contained between said walls, a slidable bolt carried by said plate, a togglelink secured at one end to said plate and at its other end to said bolt, a U-shaped operating lever the extremities of which extend through said slots, and means connecting said lever and said toggle-links.
