Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH CARL von Barron, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts for Doors and Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The subject-matter of my invention is an improved bolt for doors and windows.
In well-known bolts for securing doors and windows the sliding bolt is guided in special keepers or guides which clasp the bolts. It may happen that, when unlocking or locking the door or window, the bolt pinches the finger between the keeper and the handle of the bolt, or injures the finger at the projecting edges of the keeper. The guiding portions of the bolt are free and therefore exposed to dust and dirt, so that the sliding bolt soon moves with diiiiculty, and when a spring is arranged under the bolt in the' customary manner, the bolt is pressed away from the plate so that here also a space accessible to dust and the like is produced.
A. primary object of my invention is to remedy these defects. I attain this end by providing in the sliding bolt or in its baseplate a longitudinal chamber, into which guide pins for the sliding bolt extend and serve for holding the spring which is arranged between the pins and presses the bolt and base-plate against one another..
Two illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of my improved bolt; Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections through the center of the bolt in two different positions thereof, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view in a position corresponding to Fig. 3, the cover having been removed; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through a modied form of bolt; Fig. 6 is a cross-section in the plane A-B in Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the plate of the bolt according to Figs. 5 and 6.
Referring firstly to Figs. l to 4, on the base-plate a I provide two guide pins Z), b, having heads. The sliding bolt comprises the plate Z having slots c, c, and the top part or cover f inclosing the same and forming therewith a chamber 7L. The hollow sliding bolt is guided by the two pins b, 1 which pass through said slots. In the chamber 71, is located the spring g; this serves for pressing against the sliding bolt, is suitably held at its two ends by the pins o, and is tensioned in such manner between these that it presses the bolt tightly against the base-plate. By means of the rounded projection z' under the spring pressing on the part d of the sliding bolt, the latter is secured, in its unlocked and locked positions and is prevented from being moved unintentionally owing to said projection snapping into recesses or holes o and 01 in the member cl. The two parts Z and f are preferably connected at their front ends by means of a special rivet 1^ and at the rear by the pin of the handle or grip c.
In the illustrative embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 7 the chamber it, is in the hollow base-plate a which has slots c, 01,' the guide pins ZJ, Z), are secured in the sliding bolt f, extend into the chamber L, and carry between them the spring g. The guiding parts are covered by the sliding bolt which is pressed closely against the plate d by the spring.
Owing to the described arrangements a perfectly smooth bolt without any projecting guiding portions is made, so that fingers can no longer be jammed or pinched nor hands injured thereby. The sliding bolt fits closely against the base-plate, the bolt has a good appearance, its guiding parts are protected from dust, and when any of the sliding parts are lubricated, the lubricating agent cannot be touched and is prevented from soiling other articles.
I claim 1. In a bolt of the character described, the combination, with a base plate, of a sliding bolt slidable thereon, and guiding means comprising a tensioned spring securing the bolt on, and pressing the bolt against, the base-plate, said guiding means being protected from dust by the bolt.
2. In a bolt of the character described, the combination, with a base-plate, of a sliding bolt slidable thereon, guide pins movably securing the bolt on the base-plate, and a spring carrying a projection, said spring between said pins in said bolt, the projection 10 being tensloned between said pins and being arranged to enter into said recesses in pressing the bolt against the base-plate. the end positions of the bolt.
