WILLIAM A. NicHoLs.
lmpr'ovement'in Wagons.
N0. 121,403. Patented Nov. 28, i871.'y
UNITED STATES WILLIAM ARTHUR NICHOLS, OF ZIONSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,403, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ARTHUR NICH- OLS, of Zionsville, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a rear view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view and partial longitudinal section. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to a wagon, the bed of which rests on India-rubber block-springs; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of said springs; of the metallic sockets to hold them; of a hinged coupling-brace which couples the wagon-bed to the rear bolster; and of slide bearings attached to the sides of the wagon, preventing them from wearing against the wagon-standards; all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the wagon-body; B, the forward and rear bolsters, having the standards C. D represents iianged plates, with convex faces secured to the sides of the-wagon-body in such positions as to prevent the standards from touching and wearing the sides of the wagon. They have convex faces, so as to let the wagon-body move on the springs. The flanges d prevent the wagon from being thrown forward or backward. E indicates cleats secured to the bottom of the wagon. F represents metallic blocks, flanged on two sides, and secured to the cleats E by bolts or screws e mortised through the flanges e and into the cleats E, as shown in Fig. l. The blocks F are constructed with dovetailed sockets or recesses,
and hold the beveled India-rubber blocks or springs F', the smaller ends of which rest on the wagon-bolsters. These springs are fitted to the blocks F before the latter are attached to the cleats; hence they are held in place securely. G designates a longitudinal coupling-brace for connecting the wagon-bed to the rear bolster. It is attached at its ends to the blocks or plates g g1 by loose or hinge connection, so as to rise and fall with the motion of the wagon-body on its springs. The plate g is secured to the bottom of the wagon, and has a slotted eye, g2. The forward end of the brace G is made thin and notched on opposite sides. It is attached to and removed from the plates g by turning it on its side and passing it through the slot. The circular part or eye g2 receives the notched end of the brace, when properly arranged, and prevents it from coming out.
I claim as my inventionl. The wagon-body, constructed with convex plates D having anges d, together with blocks F having dovetailed recesses for holding the springs F', substantially as specified.
2. The hinged coupling-brace G connecting the wagon-body A with the India-rubber springs F resting on but not attached to the bolsters B, substantially as described.
3. The hinged wagon-coupling G notched at its forward end, as described, in combination with the plate g having the slotted eye g2, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ARTHUR NICHOLS.
