BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
release.
Application filed April 10, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HACIE- MANN, a citizen of the United States. and residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri. have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures, and more particularly, to closures for milk bottles.
One of the objects of this invention is to pro ide a device of this kind which may be detachably mounted on the neck of a bottle to form a movable sanitary closure therefor;
nother object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction, consists of a few stamped parts, and is cheap to manufacture.
Further bjects will appear from the detail description taken in connecti n with the accompanying drawings. in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of a part of a bottle, showing the closure embodying this invention: Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2. Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section: Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4-4:, Fig. 2, parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 5 is a plan similar to Fig. 1, but showing another embodiment of this invention; Fig. 6 is a section on the line (3-6, Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is an end elevation: and, Fig. 8 is a section on the line 88, Fig. 6, parts being shown in elevation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly, to Figs. 1 to l inclusive, 1O designates the neck of a bottle having the usual head 11 at its mouth, and the usual wafer receiving recess 12.. A. support comprising a pair of jaws 13 and 14 formed of springy material is adapted to embrace and yieldingly clamp the edge of the bottle neck. The end 15 of the jaw flares outwardly, and this jaw conforms to the inside of the bottle and follows the recess 12, as shown in Fig. 2. The outside jaw 13 conforms to the head 11, and this jaw terminates in a part 16 of beaded form extending circumferentially partly around the bottle neck, and arranged underneath the bead 11. The jaw 13 has formed integral therewith lugs 17, which are bent from the body of the jaw away from the bottle, and then laterally to form pintles 18.
A cap or closure member 19, formed of sheet metal, has a rim 20 formed to engage Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 20,529.
the rounded edge of the bottle neck, and is provided with an arm 21 having formed thereon ears 2 which are perforated to engage the pintles 18. A spring 21 is looped around the pintles inside of the ears, and the In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, the support again comprises a pair of jaws 18 and 1 embracing and clamping the edge of a bottle neck, but. in this case, the outside jaw flares outwardly at its end, as shown at 150, while the inside jaw terminates in a widened part 160 extending circumferentially of the bottle neck, and along the depression or shoulder 12. as-shown in Figs. 6 and 8. T he construction is otherwise the same as shown in Figs. 1 to d inclusive, and further description will, therefore, be unnecessary.
Milk bottles are usually provided with paper caps or wafers held in the depression in the mouth of the bottle. In using this device. this water is removed by inserting the point or prong 25 therethrough and extracting it. The resilient support is now slipped over the edge of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2. This will cause the jaws to firmly clamp the bottle neck, and, moreover, since the jaw on one side engages the bottle wall at substantially a point. while the jaw on the other wall engages the same at two separated points, there is obtained. in this way, a three point bearing which will firmly hold the support in position on the bottle neck. The cap or closure member is now held down on the bottle by its spring, and the flange part of the cap will conform to the head so as to tightly close the same. The cap can readily be raised by a manipulation oi the handle.
It will be noted that the device consists only of two stamped pieces, so that it is very Copies oi this patent may be obtained for the bottle neck by the engagement of the rounded recess with the rounded edge of the bottle neck, and by the entrance of the depression inside of the bottle, the end of the bottle will he covered, so as to prevent the accumulation of milk, etc., in the bottle mouth around the edges thereof.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the spirit of this invention. it is, therefore, to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: 4
1. A bottle closure comprising a support consisting of a pair of spaced jaws adapted to seat downwardly over and embrace and yieldingly clamp the edge of a bottle neck for removably holding the closure on the bottle, one of said jaws having a laterally projecting part extending circumferentially of and partially around the bottle neck, said support having radially projecting lugs struck directly from the body of said support within the surface plane thereof and forming pintles, and a cap constructed and arranged to seat directly upon and to be self centering on the mouth of said bottle and having a downwardly directed handle provided with integral inwardly directed ears formed for engagement with said pintles to pivotally sustain said cap on said support.
2. A bottle closure comprising a support consisting of a pair of spaced jaws adapted to seat downwardly over and embrace and yieldingly clamp the edge of a bottle neck having an inner circumferential shoulder, said jaws being constructed and arranged for removably holding the support on the bottle and the'inner jaw being adapted to project downward into the neck and having a shoulder formed to fit and seat securely on said circumferential shoulder, the outer jaw being provided with a laterally projecting part extending circumferentially of and partially around the bottle neck, said support having radially projecting lugs struck directly from the body of said support within the surface plane thereof and forming pintles, and a cap constructed and arranged to seat directly upon and to be self centering on the mouth of said bottle and having a downwardly directed handle provided with integral inwardly directed ears formed for engagement with said pintles to pivotally sustain said cap on said support.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature this 23d day of March, 1915.
FREDERICK HACHMANN.
