SAFETY DEVIGE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, LAWRENCE .R. Dr:- LANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gage, in the county of Ellis and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a safety device and is designed for use in connection with small change purses which are ada ted to be retained inhandbags. Ordinarlly the small change purses are allowed to rest.
loosely in the handbag, and should the handbag become accidentally opened there is nothing to prevent said change purse from dropping out. By the provision of the present invention, should the handbag become accidentally opened, the purse will not drop out and if it does, will not become disconnected from the handbag. The present invention may also be used, in connection with purses, to be carried in the pockets of men,
etc, and prevents the same. from being disconnected from the person of the wearer.-
With the above and other objects in View,
this invention consists in the construction,
combination and. arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed ings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a handbag having a portion'thereof broken away to illustrate the change. or coin purse reand illustrated in the accompanying drawtained therein; Fig.2 IS an end elevation of a coin purse, illustrating the safety catch .mountedtherein; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my device with a portion of the casing removed, showingthe roller and the locking catches mounted within the casing; lFig.
4L is a vertical "section taken on line H of hi 3 showing a portion of the flanged rol er with the flexible elements mounted H thereon and the spring secured to the roller."-
,. The safety device fo 'ng'the subject matter of the present invention is used chiefly and primarily in connection with small coin or bill. purses adapted'to be retained in handbags, said coin'or bill purses being provided with a pocket on one side thereof, the outer wall ofwhich -is pierced by an eyelet.
tpeclfication of Letters Patent. Application flledl December Melon. Serial No. 666,835.-
and exact description of the intion, what l claim as new and cure by U. S. Letters Patent is: v A chain or other flexible. member pierces said eyelet". and ;'is wound Patented tall. as, rare.
upon at spring actuated wheel retained within the pocket. The outer terminal of the chain is 'sewed or otherwise secured to the adjacent wall of the pocketbook; thereby securing said purse to the interior of the pocketbook .or handbag. is removed from said pocketbook or handbag the chain unwinds from the reel and permits the purse to bepwitlrdrawn, but when the purse is released and replaced in the handbag, the chain or other flexible member is wound on the-interior of the pocket, as will-hereinafter be more specifically described.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 mdicates generally a handbag, in which is adapted to be retained a When the pursecoin or bill purse 11. 'Sewed or' otherwise the pocket 12 and has mounted for rotation therein a reel 15 about which a flexible member or chain 16 is adapted to be wound.
One side of the casing is provided with a pluralit of lugs 17, which are adapted to be engaged by the pivoted catches 18 toretain the reel in a stationary position. The op 0- site side of the casing is provided wlth similar lugs which engage the free terminal of the coil spring 19, which is mounted on the interior of the reel 15 and which has its opposite terminal secured to said reel. Thus as the chain 16 is withdrawn frorn'thecasing 14, the spring 19 will be wound, and when the free terminal of the chain 16 is released, said spring will automatically rotate said reelanddraw the chain into the cas ing.' The free terminal of the chain 16 which projects through the" eyeleted aperture 13,
.18 provided with an enlarged eye 20 which .is sewed or otherwise secured to the adjacent 'wall'of the handbag 10. Thus when the urse' 11 is removed, from the handbag 10,-t e chain 16 will be withdrawn from the casing 141:,theteby-retaining a permanent engagernent between the purse and the handhla ying thus fully described my invendesire to seiln a safety device, the combination of a lltl cured to the inner face of one of the sides of the purse at each of its marginal ed es forming a completely closed pocket with which the eyelet communicates, a casing located within the pocket and having opposite walls and a peripheral opening, a central transverse pivot mounted within the A casing, lugs located at one of the walls of catches pivoted to the reel in the said shal- 15 low recess and arranged to engage the said lugs to hold the reel, and a flexible element wound around the reel in the peripheral groove thereof and extending through the said opening and the said eyelet and pro- 20 vided at its outer end with attaching means.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE R. DELANEY.
