CHRISTIAN '.BODMIER, OF NEVI BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO THE STANLEY RULE AND LEVEL COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
IVIITER AND TRY-SQUARE.
Application led May 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN BoDMnR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Miter and rIry- Square, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a combination miter and try-square and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple and practical form of tool which can be readily used at will to serve the functions of a trysquare or miter.
A special object is to provide a tool of the above mentioned character having a work ing blade which may be adjusted as to length to suit different requirements.
In the accomplishment of these objects and others as will later appear, I construct the tool with a stock having a ninety degree or right angle straight edge at one side and a forty-five or miter straight edge on the opposite side thereof and I provide a working blade which is slidably engaged in the tool stock and is also pivotally secured so that it may be swung from one side of the tool stock over to the opposite side of thetool stock.
A special feature of the invention is the provision of the tool stock with an opening therethrough located between the straight edges at the opposite sides thereof and providing clearance for the end of the blade in swinging over from one side to the opposite side of the tool head.
Another feature is the provision of bearing seats at the opposite ends of said opening providing supports for the blade in the planes of the respective straight edges.
A further feature is a special form of slotted bolt for holding the blade in adjusted relation in the head, carrying a pin working in a longitudinal slot in the blade.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated the invention embodied in the practical and preferred form but it will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
In said drawing, Figure 1 is a face view of the tool partly broken to show the bearing seats for the blade and indicating, in dotted lines, the action of swinging the blade from one side over to the opposite side of the head. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken Speciication of Letters Patent.

semi No. 100,448.
substantially on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the invention as embodied in a. square.
The tool stock 7 is made with a ninety degree face or straight edge 8 at one side thereof and a forty-five degree face or straight edge 9 at the opposite side thereof, the two straight edges converging to a head portion in which the marking blade 10 is secured. This blade is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 11 therein having closed ends and extending usually about half the length of the blade.
The marking blade seats in a slot 12 formed in the head and extending through from the straight edge at one side to the straight edge on the opposite side, bearing seats 13 and 14 for the blade being provided at the opposite ends of the slots in the planes of the respective straight edges.
At a point between the bearing seats the tool stock is recessed or formed with an opening as indicated at 15, leaving the two bearing seats separated from each other so that the blade rests on two separate points of support and providing also clearance for the end of the blade when turning the blade over from one side to the opposite side, as will be clear in the dotted positions of the blade shown in Fig. 1.
The blade is adjustably held to its seat by a clamping bolt or post 1G seated in a bore 17 in the tool stock and slotted as indicated at 18 to provide arms 19 disposed at opposite sides of and receiving between them the thickness of the blade. A pivot pin 20 connecting these arms works in the slot 11 in the blade and the exposed end of the bolt is usually threaded to receive a clamp nut 21.
The use of the device will be clear from the foregoing it being apparent that upon loosening the thumb nut 2O the blade may be easily slid over and secured at any desired length and may further when desired be swung over from a position cooperating with the one straight edge into position at the opposite side of the head coperating with the other straight edge which makes it possible to adapt the tool to many different requirements. The recess or opening 15 left between the bearing seats is of especial advantage in that it prevents the corners of the blade being injured in the movement of swinging the blade from one side the blade is bearing on the opposite seat -whichneeds no truingf the ,movement of this cutting blade thenserving ,to .quickly Areducevthe high bearing seat `to its proper height. It will be evident that the features .of the invention canas well .be incorporated in the usual type of try-square as indicated :in
Fig. 3 where except for the: tool stock being l,designated 7 ,andthe straight edges being ldesignated 8 and 9 the reference characters are the same.
What I clainris:
l., A combined miter and try square coniprising a tool stock having convergently, arranged mitering and :squaringedges and a bladepivotally secured in the yhead `of the tool stock between said edges and adapted to be swung fromcoperating relation with one of said yedges overV to thev opposite side of the head into coperatmg relation with vthe other edge with a seat on each side of the pivotalmountingfor said blade, vsaid yseatsibein-g positioned to simultaneously engage one side edge lof said/blade .to definitely establish the angular position of said blade and stock.
2.?In a tool of the character set forth, a tool stock havingstraight edges at opposite sides thereof and a slot extending' therethrough from onestraightedge to the .other straightedge, a blade seated insaidslot and formed itself with a longitudinal slot and a clamping bolt `mounted in the toolk stock and ,provided` with a pivot pin working in the slot in the blade to thereby permit ,of .thefblade beingswung on said pivot from cooperating relation with thel straight edge ony one side of thetool ,over into coperatingrelation with the other straight edge on the.-.oppo
site side of the tool with a seat on each side of the pivotal mounting for said blade, said seats being positioned vto 'simultaneously engage onefside edge ofA saidblade to deflnitely establish the angular position of said blade and stock.
3. In a tool of the character set forth, a tool 4stock having straight edges atoppo- Y site sidesthereof, and a slot extending therethrough from one straight edge to the other straight edge, a.-blade -seated -in ysaid slot andr .formedy itself vwith .ai ylongitudinal slot, a clamping bolt mounted inithe, toolstock and provided with afpivot7 pin working in .the slot in.k the blade toz thereby permit yof the yblade beingswung-.on said pivot from ccperating relation with the straight-edge onv one side of the toolover ,into coperating relation with the other straightedge on,- thejopposite side of theitool, ,saidetool stock `having gan. openingf extending therethrough ,located between the straight; edges to provide clearance for .the-.end 4of the blade inswinging, over from oneside to the Aopposite. side .of the 7tool stock and provided withffbearing -seatsfor theblade vat the opposite ends ofsaid opening.`
4. Inatoolof the character setforth, a Atoolstock having straightv edgesatv opposite ysides thereofanw.opening therethrough between ,saidl straight` edgesbearing seats .at the. opposite-fendsof saidopening and a slot extendingfthrough the-toolstock from the .straight edge: at lone vside. to. theistraight edge at the ,opposite side thereof, a 1 .blade seated in said, slot and :bearing on -said 4seats 4at .the respective straight., edges and bridging the openingybetween:said bearing seats; said, .blade ,having a. longitudinal .slot
therein, a slotted clamping post .mounted in`v thev tool `stoclfand, :having sidearms embracing theopposite faces yof. the. blade `and yafpivotgpin extending between theY side arms .and throughthe longitudinal f slot in =the blade to thereby =hold-the blade;inflengthwise adjustable relation inzthetool stock andl .permit ,of :said bladeV .being swung. over fromf one. side ofv the tool stocktoithe other side.
