Description
B. GOLDSMITH.
improvement in Binder f0 Sewing Machines.
NO. 121,356. Patented Nmi-28J87i.
' 'iwimeamz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD GOLDSMITH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JENNY GOLDSMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BINDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,356, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD GOLDSMITH, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Binders and Hemmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the plate from which my improved binder is formed. Fig. 3 is a front view of the binder, and Fig. 4 an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to the manufacture of sewing-machine hemmers and binders; and it will be first hereinafter fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
A in Fig. 3 of the drawing represents the plate from which the binder is formed. The halves of each are alike, and each consists of a nearlysemicircular main plate or body, a, and of a projecting tongue, I). In forming the binder the tongue is, on its narrow neck 0, turned over the plate a, and then the rounded outer part of a is turned over the tongue to form a lip, 61, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. This plate A is provided with diagonal slots, as shown, to guide or insure the passage of the material about the tongues b b. The halves of the binder are then carried one over the other, as in Fig. 5. The binding material is inserted at the large end of the tongue under the neck of the same, and when drawn ahead is finally bent over the outer edge of said tongue, the lip d keeping it in place thereon The desired degree of gradual contraction is obtained by the more or less oblique turn of the lip. The binder thus produced is absolute in its action, furnishing a sharp edge for the turning of the material on the tongue I) and a guarding-surface for the guiding of the fabric by the lip d. This binder may also be used for hemmin g.
The device is secured to the bed of the machine by means of a screw through the slot in the shank D, and the forward end of this shank is provided with a raised and notched projection, g, that overhangs the material passing under it, preventing its being misplaced before reaching the needle-presser. The 'presser is to come up to the notched part g.
I am aware that a double-hemming binder is not new, nor do I claim broadly a hemmer composed of a central tongue and overlapping surfaces; but
What I do claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the binder herein described and shown, provided with slots 0 and projection g, as and for the purpose set forth.
B. GOLDSMITH.
