H. J. SCHAFFER.
GARBAGE CAN.

HENRY J. SCHAFFER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GARBAGE-CAN.
Application filed September 5, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. HENRY J. Scrmrr'nn, a citizen of the United States. residing at the city of New York. in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to garbage cans, the objectof the same being to provide novel means for holding the top or cover in place when the can has been filled. or partially filled, so that the same cannot be removed by an animal and the contents of the can scattered about.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for positively locking the cover on the can and for positively retaining the bail in its lowermost position.
Other objects of the invention will appear later, and what I regard as new will be set forth in the claims. 7
In the drawing forming part of the specification: Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved can. the bail being shown in full lines in its lowermost locking position and in dotted linesv in its raised position; and 2 is a similar view, taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts of the different views.
My improved can Consists of a body '1 having the ears on opposite sides thereof, and the bail 3 pivotally connected to said ears. The ears 2 are secured to the sides of the body 1 and extend outwardly and upwardly from the upper circular end of said body. Each of said ears is preferably made from a strip of sheet metal bent to form the two parallel members 1. and the intermediate connecting member 6 at substantially right angles to the other two. The member a is riveted or otherwise secured to the side of the body 1, and the member?) extends substantially parallel to the side of said body. but is located a short distance from it and extends above the upper end of the body. The bail 3 may be of any suitable shape along its intermediate portion. It is preferably made from heavy stiff wire bent inwardly at its opposite ends to form the pivot portions '7 which extend through openings in the ears 3, and then reversely bent, as shown, to form the terminal arms 8. lV'hen the bail '3 is in its raised position, the arms 8 extend above the top of the body .1

of the can, but when the bail 3 is swung downwardly in one direction, so that the central portion of said bail bears against the side of the body 1, the ends of said arms pass beyond the dead center, that is, beyond the vertical lines extending through the pivots of the bail, and fit and lie within the spaces between the rip-turned ends 5 of the ears 2 and the sides of the body 1. The cover 9 of the can fits over the upper end thereof and is formed with an outwardly extending annular flange 10 which, when the cover is in place, fits within the spaces between the upper ends of the ears 2 and the body 1. The cover 9 is further provided with a handle 11.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: lVith the bail 3 in its raised position the cover 9 may be placed upon the body 1 of the can by moving it horizontally across the top of the can and when in proper position. allowing it to drop down upon the upper end of the body, with the flange 10 thereon fitting within the spaces between the upper ends of the ears 2 and said body. The bail may then be swung downwardly or dropped to one side so that the central portion thereof rests against the side of the body. When the bail is thus moved, the ends of the arms 8 thereon are forced down against the upper surface of the flange 10 on the cover and beyond the dead center or vertical plane through the pivots of the bail and thus serve to retain said cover in place. The same cannot be removed by a dog or other animal desiring to get at the contents of the can, unless the bail itself is first lifted, and, while the latter is in its raised position, the cover 9 raised and given a horizontal movement. There is, of course, a remote chance of this being done, but in order to provide against even this, I have supplied a positive lock for the bail 3 which also acts, through the bail and the arms 8, as a positivelock for the cover 9. This lock consists of a turn-button l2 pivoted to the side of the body 1, provided with handle 13 and adapted to be turned downwardly so as to engage the central portion of the bail 3 to prevent the latter from being raised, or to be turned to its uppermost position, to permit the free movement of said bail. hen the bail is locked by the turn-button 12, the cover 9 is firmly and positively secured to the can body.-
Having now described my invention, ayhat I claim is:
l. The combination with a can body having upwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body, and a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form cover-retain ing arms, the said arms engaging said cover when the bail is in its lowermost position.
2. The combination with a can body having upwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body, and a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form cover-re taining arms, the said arms extending at an angle to the plane of the bail and adapted to engage the upper surface of the cover, beyond the vertical plane of the pivots, when the bail is moved downwardly into contact with the side of said body.
3. The combination with a can body having upwardly and outwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body having an outwardly extending flange fitting within the spaces between said body and said ears, and a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form cover-retaining arms, the said arms engaging said flange when the bail is in its lowermost position.
l. The combination with a can body having upwardly and outwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body having an outwardly extending flange fitting within the spaces between said body and said ears, and a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form cover-retaining arms, the said armsextending at an angle to the plane of the bail Copies of this patent may be obtained for and adapted to engage the upper surface of said flange, beyond the vertical plane of the pivots, when the bail is moved downwardly into contact with the side of the body.
5. The combination with a can body having upwardly and outwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body having an outwardly extending flange lifting within the spaces between said body and said cars, a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form coverretaining arms, the said arms ongaging said flange when the bail is in its low-'ern'iost position and being raised away from said flange when the bail is lifted, and means for locking the bail in its lowermost position along the side of said body.
(3. The combination with a can body having upwardly and outwardly extending ears on opposite sides thereof, of a cover for said body having an outwardly extending flange fitting within the spaces between said body and said ears, a bail pivoted to said ears and having the opposite ends thereof bent to form cover-retaining arms, the said arms engaging said flange when the bail is in its lowermost position and being raised away from said flange when the bail is lifted, and
- a turn-button pivoted to said body and adapted to engage the intermediate portion of said bail when the latter is in its lowermost position for positively locking said bail in such position.
In witness whereof, I subscribe my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
