DOOR-LATCH.
Application filed May 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHANIEL TWOMBLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eastonville, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in means for latching doors, either in an open or closed position, and the primary object of the invention is to construct a simple, cheap and thoroughly effective latch which will hold a door either open or closed until the same has been manually operated, so that danger of the weakening or breaking of the hinges or other parts of the door, incident to the said door being swung to and fro bv the wind will be entirely overcome.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a simple form of latch which will automatically engage with a latch bar upon a swinging door, when the same contacts with the latch, and further whereby the door may be operated from either the interior or exterior of a building.
With the above and other objects in View, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a door provided with my improved latch, Fig. 2 is a similar view approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the dotted lines illustrating the door in its open position, Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, employed for holding the door in a closed position, Fig. 4 is asimilar view of the latch for holding the door in an open position, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch bar which is secured to the door, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the contact or bumper plate which prevents the latch bar from contacting with the frame work for the door.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary barn door which is hingedly secured to one of the casing strips of the jamb of the door, as indicated by the numeral 2. The second vertical casing strip indicated by the numeral 3 is provided with an opening 4 through which passes the hooked end 5 of a latch 6. The latch includes a body 7 which has its end, opposite that provided with the hook 5 formed with what I will term a tail 7 and Specification of Letters Patent.

the body is pivotally connected, as at 8, between a supporting plate 9 and a bracket member 10, the bracket being also secured to the plate 9, as at 11. The tail of the latch to the rear of the pivot 9 is provided with an opening 12 through which is passed an adjustable member 13 preferably in the nature of a bolt, nuts 14 and 15 being threadedly connected to the opposite ends of said bolt 13, and the nut 14 rests upon the upper face of the tail 7 of the latch. The second end passes through an elongated opening in the bracket 15, while surrounding the said bolt and exerting a tension between the tail of the latch and the bracket 15 is a helical spring 16. The tension of the spring may be regulated by adjusting the nut 14, as will be readily understood and as the hooked end 5 of the bolt is formed with a goose-neck extension 17, the same may be swung upon its pivot 8, either from the extension 17 or from the tail 7. The bolt 13, it will be noted, serves manually as a guide means for the spring 16, while the nuts 14 and 15 serve as means for adjusting the pressure of the spring between the bracket 15 and the latch 6 adjacent the tail portion 7 of the said latch so that its hook 5 will be brought into proper contacting position as well as for limiting the upward swinging of the tail of the latch.
The numeral 18 designates a latch plate or strip which is secured to the outer face of the door 1 and which is adapted to be engaged by the hooked end 5 of the latch. In order to prevent the strip 18 from contacting with the framework of the doorway, I provide an abutment plate 19, the same being preferably constructed of metal and being arranged so as to be contacted by the plate 18 when the door is swung to its closed position. In order to retain the door latched when in an open position, I provide a second latch member, indicated by the numeral 20, the same adjacent its hooked end, indicated by the numeral 21, being of a goose-neck formation, as indicated by the numeral 22, so that the same may be swung upon its pivot 23. through a suitable plate 24, the plate, in the present instance, being provided with an angular extension or bracket 25, and the lower end of the said bracket 25 is provided with an ofiset portion or foot 26.
