To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United St ates, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in firearms of the class using rim-cartridges as distinguished from rimless cartridges, the obj ect being to provide clearance in the gunbarrel for the cartridge-supporting abutment projecting from the forward end of the breech-bolt, without interfering with the support of the body and rim of the cartridge by the gun-barrel itself.
\Vith these ends in view, my invention consists in a firearm having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I form a segmental, concentric clearance-recess 2 in the flat rear face 3 of the threaded stem l projecting from the breechend 5 of the gun-barrel 6. The said clearance-recess 2 is separated from the cartridgechamber 7 in the breech-end 5 of the gunbarrel, by a segmental cartridge-supporting wall 8 as best shown in Fig. 2. Under this construction, the provision of the gun-barrel Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
6 with the clearance-recess 2, does not impair the support afforded the cartridge by the walls of the cartridge-chamber 7. The said clearance-recess 2 receives the beveled forward end of a cartridge-retaining abutment- 9- projecting from the forward end of the breech-bolt l0 and co-acting inthe usual manner with the cartridge-extractor 11 which is applied to the bolt and which enters a clearance-cut 12 in the face 3 aforesaid.
lVhe-n the gun is closed with a rim-cartridge 13 in the cartridge-chamber 7 the cartridge-retaining abutment 9 enters the clearance-recess 2, the segmental form of which permits the abutment to move in the recess as the bolt is being rotated a quarter turn for locking and unlocking. hen the breech-bolt is unlocked and retracted for the extraction of the spent cartridge, the abutment 9 supports the cartridge through the rim thereof, against the thrust in the opposite direction of the extractor 11, throughout the extracting operation. The recess 2 thus provides for the clearance of the abutment 9, while the wall 8 preserves the integrity of the outer edge of the cartridge-chamber 7.
I claim In a firearm, the combination with a breech-bolt adapted to be rotated for looking and unlocking it, and provided with a forwardly projecting cartridge-retaining abutment, of a gun-barrel formed with a segmental clearance-recess for the reception and rotary movement of the said abutment, the said recess being separated from the rear portion of the cartridge-chamber in the gunharrel by a cartridge-supporting wall, and a cartridge-extractor co-acting with the said abutment in the extraction of the spent-cartridges.
