COMBINED DESK AND SEAT.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1e, 1917.
Application led November 20,1915. Serial No. 62,554.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN K. BLooM- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brady, in the county of McCulloch' and Statevof rlleXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Desks and Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as willv enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in combined desks and seats. Y y
The obj ect of the present invention is to improve the construction of combined desks and seats and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive combined school desk and seat of strong and durable construction and adapted to be easily installed in a school room or other place and capable of permitting independent adjustment of the seat and the desk to arrange the seats and the' desk to suit the size of the persons occupying the same.
A further object of the Vinvention is to provide a combined desk and seat of this character which will greatly facilitate the cleaning of school rooms and other places occupied by the combined school desk and seat and thereby facilitate the labors of a janitor or other person in removing dust and trash.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details o-f construction may. be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the arrangement of the combined desks and seats, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view ofthe combined desks and seats, Fig. 8 is al horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, 50 Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which l is illustrated the preferred; embodiment of the invention, the' combined school desk and -seatr comprises in'its construction a base l preferably constructed of cast metal and of rectangular form but any other coniguration may of course be employed and the said base which is secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the ioor of a school room. or other place has a slightly concaved lower face 2 to enable the marginal edges of the base to fit closely against the -floor or other supporting surface for excluding dust from beneath the base.
The base 1 which has beveled upper faces 34 to facilitate sweeping around the same and the removal of dust therefrom is provided with a fixed vertical standard 4 provided with a vertical socket 5 extending downwardly from the upper end of the standard and receiving vertical adjustable bars lor members 6 and 7. The bars or members 6 and 7 which carry a desk 8 and a seat 9 are provided in their lower portions which are fitted together with perforations 10 and 11 adapted to be arranged in alinement-for the reception of bolts 12 for securing the vertically movable bars or members 6 and 7 in their adjustment. The bolts 12 which are equipped with squared heads and wing nuts are reverselyy arranged, the head of one bolt being located at one side of the standard and the head of the other bolt being at the opposite side to enable one of the bolts to be entirely removed and the other bolt partially removed for supporting either the vertically adjustable bar or member 6er the bar or member 7 as the case may be while the other bar or member is being adjusted. By this arrangement it is unnecessary to disturb the adjustment of one of thebars or members while the other is being raised or lowered. The vertically adjustable bars or members are preferably closure for the desk. The top 15 may be secured to the body portion of the desk by hinges 17 which have leaves 18 secured to a Hap or section 19 adapted toswing downwardly as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings in dotted lines to cover a pencil receiving groove 20 or other suitable receptacle for pens and pencils. rIhe section 16 Which is connected to the top 15 by suitableV hinges 21 is adapted to be arranged in alinement or in the same plane as the top 15 to form an extension thereof for increasing the size of the top of the desk and it is supported in an elevated position by braces 22 hinged or pivot-ed at 23 to the section 16 and adapted to engage interiorly arranged shoulders 24 formed by lugs or projections located at opposite sides of the desk at the bottom thereof. The braces may be arranged at one or both sides of the desk and when they are disengaged from the shoulders 24 the section 16 is adapted to swing downwardly to its closed position. The desk and seat may be supported by suitable braces extending Vfrom the bars or members to thesupporting arms or only the desk may be braced. Also the seat may be hinged if desired and a back may be secured to the upper portion of the bar or member 6.
It will be seen that the combined desk Vbars used.
What is claimed is A combined desk and seat including a base having a standard provided with a socket, vertically adjustable bars or members arranged in the said vsocket and having oppositely extending arms, a desk carried by one of the bars or members, a seat mounted on `the other bar or member and reverscly arranged fastening ldevices piercing the standard and the said bars or members com- 1 mon to the same for securing the said bars or members in their vertical adjustment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
