INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY,

SEWI G-C AIR.
Application filed April 3, 1916. Serial N6. 88,648.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELLA F. TINSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sewing chairs, and my object is to combine in one-structure compartments and pockets for holding scissors, Spools of thread, thimbles, pins and needles, and various other articles utilized in sewing, within easy reach of a person occupying the chair.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the chair with the lids of the compartments thrown open to show the interior arrangement thereof. Fig.
3 is a vertical sectional view of the chair enlarged. Fig. 4 is a broken detail view of of a rocking chair, it is to be understood that certain parts employed in carrying out the invention.
In the drawing, I have shown the device in the form of a rocking chair embodying a back 1, legs 2, rockers 3, a seat 4, and arms 5 and 6. The back 1, the seat 4 and the tops of the arms 5 and 6 are, preferably, covered with tufted cretonne or other suitable material 7, to render the chair easy and comfortable to any one setting therein.
The arm 5 is an elongated chest-like Structure, the underside of which is partly closed by a bottom 8. In the present instance said arm is divided into compartments 9 and 10 by partitions 11 and 12. The compartment 9 may be utilized for holding such articles as thimbles, while thebottom of the compartment 10 has slots 13 therein through which scissors may be dropped until their handles contact the sides of said slots, thus holding the scissors in a convenient position to be readily grasped when needed. A compartment 14, in front of the compartment 9, is provided with removable pins 15 for holding spools of thread. One end of said'pins 15 extends into L-shaped slots 16 in one side of the compartment 14, so that they can be readily removed when an empty spool of thread is to be replaced by a full spool. In order that the compartments may be closed when not in use, I provide a hinged lid 17 having at its underside a pocket 18, for holding papers of pins, needles, etc. When closed, the lid 17 is held down in place by a suitable fastener 19. A large flexible pocket 20 is arranged beneath the arm 5, to hold scraps of material. Said pocket 20 is-reinforced at its outer side by strips 21, and has an opening 22 between the seat 4 and the arm 5, so that access can be readily had to its contents.
Referring now to the opposite arm 6 it will be noted that the same has a forward compartment 23 for buttons and other small articles. In the rear of said compartment 23 is an opening 24 to a large flexible pocket 25, suspended from the arm 6 for holding fancy and other work. The pocket 25, like the pocket 20 is reinforced with strips 21. The compartment 23 and the opening 24 are closed when not in "use by a hinged lid 26, havingpin cushions 27 at its underside for holding pins, needles, etc. When closed the lid 26 iS-held down with a fastener 19.
While I have shown the device in the form the rockers 3 may be dispensed with and the legs 2 provided with ball-bearing rollers.
- From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a sewlng chair possessing all of the features of advantage above-enumerated, and while, I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
, 1. In a sewing chair, an arm embodying a chest with an opening in the bottom thereof, and a flexible pocket suspended from said arm and communicating with the opening in the bottom of the chest.
2. In a sewing chair, an arm embodying a chest with an opening in the bottom thereof, a lid to close said chest, a flexible pocket sus pended from said arm and communicating with the opening in the bottom of the chest, and strips secured to the chair to reinforce said pocket.
3. In a sewing chair, an arm embodying a In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature, chest having compartments and an opening in the presence of two Witnesses. therein a lid to close said chest and provided With nieans for holding difi'erent articles, DELLA TINSLEY' 5 and a flexible pocket suspended from said Witnesses:
arm and communicating With the opening in 5 F. G. FISCHER, the chest. L. J. FIsoHER.
copies of this patent may be obtained for five .cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Eat/ants. Washington, D. G.
