To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, FRAKLIN S. MARE and HARRY R. MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Seats; and we do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresof ref-' erence marked thereon, which form a part of the specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chair seats, a specific object of the invention being to provide, in connection with a woven cane or reed seat bottom, a. supplemental supporting bottom positioned directly below the cane seat and adapted to prevent the-sagging or breaking of the seat.

To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

T he invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which igure 1 is a top plan view of a chair seat embodying my invention, parts being broken away in order to more clearly show the detailed construction. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse view, partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the supplemental bottom is attached to the frame.

Before the frame 8 carrying the woven bottom of the chair is placed in position over the central opening 2, the wire is strung through the openings 4% in the metallic marginal strip 5' and drawn taut, the wire being passed through an opening, thence extended within the folded edge of the metallic strip to the next succeeding opening, thence across the opening in the chair bottom through'the corresponding opening and the wire is thus passed through the series of openings upon the opposite sides until a complete supporting wire bottom is provided directly beneath and closely adjacent to the chair bottom when the same is secured in place. The advantages of this construction will be at once evident as the cane seat bottoms of chairs are frequently broken or caused to sag at the center when in use. By the use of the supplemental wire supporting device which we employ, this objection will be entirely overcome and the life of the cane seat will be greatly prolonged.

While we have described the invention as used in connection with chair bottoms, it will beat once evident that it is equally well adapted for seats and backs of settees and other furniture in which a woven surface is provided.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim to be new is A seat having a frame with an opening therein, plates secured to said frame and having their inner marginal edges projecting over the marginal edges of the opening and bent U-shaped in cross section, said bent portions being provided with oppositely disposed notches, wires passing through said notches in oppositely disposed plates, and a woven top covering said plates and wires and fastenedto the frame about the outer edges of said plates.
